This peak was near the top of my list for scrambles to do this year. Magnus and I have been talking about this one for a while now. We did Mt Edith together with our friend Aibert for our first peak & decided that it was time to attempt Wapta.
The trail is outstanding all the way to Yoho Lake & up Burgess trail to reach the gully. We slogged up the right side of this gully, through a few cliff bands on loose scree till we reached the summit block.
Here is where the real scrambling starts, definitely low 5th class up Alan Kane's route. We agreed this is a climbers scramble with severe exposure, many parties take the ledge around to climbers right to ascend this peak which we took on descent. I kept saying while climbing up that this is Spicy! For good reason as there was loose rock on the ledges, many holds were loose & there was some awkward moves made to make it up to the summit ridge. Magnus agreed that it was spicy but he climbed it with ease & we both came to the conclusion it was a lot of fun!
Happy we found the ledge traverse on descent because I would of been a little sketched out down climbing the crux, there is gear for a rappel which many parties also use to descend. The summit ridge was exposed but not that narrow so we scrambled up to the summit with ease. We enjoyed the views with a nice break on the summit, descended & really enjoyed ourselves all day. Thanks to Magnus for the great teamwork on this peak, happy to have a partner with the skills & great attitude to communicate & navigate the difficult terrain on this mountain, Cheers.
