This is such a great video series showing how complicated all the relationships between the Swedish forces, ANA, ANP, ANSD, and the village elders can be. Especially the village elders, who may be protecting the Talibs. It's also really evident why it's always good to have two 'terps on hand who aren't familiar with each other to make sure that the dialogue is being translated correctly and without personal opinion. Most of what the'terp said was bullshit and not what the elder was saying. If the commander is getting the edited version of the elders statements then he can't take appropriate action, no matter how well meaning the interpreter. A secondary terp would keep the first one honest and vice versa. Many of these videos where terps are involved show a broad spectrum of inaccuracies because the interpretation is not word for word. Often times, this involves the interpreter selecting more culturally sensitive language to help the commander in question save face or avoid unintended insult. Often times however, the terps can be seen toning down or leaving out direct insults or threats on the part of village elders TO the commanders. These situations I would think, have the potential for friendly forces to be faced with violence which would otherwise not come as a surprise had the correct translation been given. Good interpreters were certainly the unsung heros of the Afghan war, given the huge amount of risks they took to their and their family's well being. Many lost their lives or were badly wounded standing right next to their military employers during firefights and ambushes.
Everything suffers with wars with conventional weapons, mostly explosions, i rather have wars fought with swords and shields then with firearms, it becomes less personal the way things are now.
What's even more wierd is the afghan people having more trust for the Swedes than they have for the ANA/ANP. That does not bode good for the future of Afghanistan. Of course this is a year or two old, but still. Considering a lot of countries are withdrawing their troops in the comming years.
It weird how much us westerners overlook the cultural implications; women addressing men and the handing out of leaflets - can be a death sentence if the taliban finds them on you.
You get what you pay for . No one wanted to work for swedes since they didn’t grant their few translators a green card like other countries did and took them out from afghanistan. Swedes paid little and left all their 20 translators behind . Most of them got killed
What are you talking about? "the west"... I hope you are aware that Sweden is not in NATO and during the cold war era was unaligned in order to be able to be neutral if a war broke out. Please do not say "the west" when you actually mean USA...
Merecir not the people man . You have the all nato there . What do swedish can accomplish when your not the main power there . Yall take troops instead of teachers and engineers then complain why they don’t improve the. Complain later when they immigrate to your country.
Oh, and another deal. I agree that there are cultural implications, but that works both ways. Men adressing married women, or laying hands on them, is much worse then women adressing men, I think. It helps alot to have women that can approach such situations without the risk for cultural incidents. The leaflets was proven in the episode, people throwing them on the ground in fear of Taliban retribution.
well I just wish that all troops come home. second for my OPINION i better choose Sweden army than USA. I see they have more respect to the people and know how to see people and taliban as different way. For other side I see how the people see diff way to this army than USA. USA Always have bad reputation
Its funny how the PSY Ops officer stated it wasn't a war like in France or the bridges of the Netherlands when Sweden didn't even fight in the war. I think he should've used the Battle of Waterloo instead as an example.
Michael Brigola Well considering writing reports for incidents is mandatory people will always be able to see how a battle was fought and the decisions behind it. Therefore your comment is an annoying one.
Yep , the ole Afghan army and police ? , that failure really turned out well didn`t it , politicians should have been sent there they are so smart and all, pathetic
Well I admire the female soldiers in all of the Isaf coalition. But to have female soldiers in the Special-forces its not so good idea? At least in my opinion! The Airborne rangers have a really insane policy. In the second selection the females dont have to run and carry as much as the males. I ask my self what the hell would happened if a 90 kg soldier gets injured and and a female has to carry him to safety etc.
Women are just as able as men. Besides the obvious physical differences, there are women who passes the hardest military programs here and some men don't. It would be wrong to generalize because of gender. At the end, its a matter of mental stability and willpower to handle the task at hand.
