War for Sport: A Look Inside the World of LARP

In a park on the outskirts of Baltimore, a group of spectators gathered to cheer on friends, parents and significant others. Fans kneeled along the sides of a grassy field, while a few people lounged in fold-out chairs perched under trees.
The scene was set for any soccer, lacrosse or baseball game. But instead of shortstops and center-fielders, they cheered for wizards and warlords.
Darkon fighters prepare for battle at Oregon Park.
It’s called Live-Action Role Playing, or LARPing, where players dress up as fantasy characters and fight one another with foam weapons.
Movies like “Role Models” and “Knights of Badassdom” have caused LARPing to gain more notoriety, but because of the mainstream portrayal of role-playing games, the title of “LARPer” usually comes with a stigma.
“I think in a satirical way they touch on what this is, but you’re not going to get accuracy out of a raunchy comedy,” Gerard McNeal, longtime LARPer, said of movies like “Role Models.”
McNeal, 43, is the former president of Darkon Wargaming, one of the largest LARPing clubs in the country.
In LARP, players battle one another using fake foam swords and other hand-made weapons. They are also encouraged to create a character, whose persona a LARPer adopts while they play. Characters have elaborate background stories that include alternate skills, family lives, religions and relationships.
Players are often accused of using the game as an unhealthy escape from their real lives, but most participants hold steady jobs and have social lives outside of the game, McNeal said.
“People view it as an escapist thing, that it’s not just a fun activity you can do like a videogame,” he said.
Twice a month, Darkon attracts a crowd of a hundred or more to park grounds throughout the Maryland area. It’s not only the most consistently attended LARP clubs, it’s also one of the most inclusive, according to Alynna Lunaris, aka “Foxglove.”
Lunaris, 45, finalized her transition to become a woman nearly 15 years ago, and since then has never found a more welcoming community, she said.
“I have not seen this type of acceptance in almost any other community, so I do think it’s quite unique,” she said.
Lunaris even got married surrounded by her Darkon friends. In May, Lunaris tied the knot with Christina, aka “Bunny,” her partner of nearly four years.
In Darkon, there are no stigmas, she said.
“It’s actually really nice to say and very unusual to say, that there is no transgender community [in Darkon]”,” Alynna Lunaris said. “There is no difference. In the group I’m one of the people, one of the girls.”
And although the character names and weapons are fake, LARPing had some real life lessons to pass on to its players, according to Ianje Castellanos and Sev Gedra, two Darkon fighters.
Castellanos, aka “Fyxe,” was a shy bookworm before she started LARPing at Darkon, she said.
Fyxe uses red contact lenses to give her character a unique twist.
“It just gave me something that I could excel at for the first time in my life,” she said. “I was one of those closeted nerd kids, always behind like a computer, reading a book kind of thing.”
But LARPing, and Darkon specifically, made her learn to make her voice heard, she said. Gedra, who goes by just “Sev” in the game, agreed.
“Some people have louder voices than others, so if you want your voice heard, making it heard is important,” Gedra said. That lesson has helped her not only with wargaming, but also in the business world, where she is a costume maker, special-effects makeup artist and welder, she said.
For Gedra and Castellanos, Darkon is a place where their imaginations and strong personalities can thrive. And dressing up in costumes gives LARPing the extra bit of “flair” they like.
“Why the fuck not?” Castellanos said. “It’s what I want to be.”

haha looks pretty fun One of those things that look dumb and you probably think you're too mature, but once you get into it, you go all out. It's the instinct to have fun! Sorta like dodgeball or kickball. Grownups are like naaaaa, I'm too old. But when they get in the game, you'll see smiles all around lol

Well actually, I larped once with my brothers when I was like, 8, in a public park and I was surrounded by teens as well as adult men. (I was a tiny, 8 y.o girl😂) I felt tiny, which is what granted me the name "Sluthe the goddess petite" 😅 (She had a badass backstory too) Anyway, they made me their leader, they asked me before we went into battle what our plan for attack was. This was when I was getting into watching Vikings so.... When the other side yelled charge, I got to shout "Hold............ SHEILD WALL!" And everyone put their shields up, and it. WAS. AWESOME! To sum it up, we won. And I still larp to this day. (Tho, now the name is Laylith the Blood Jotuun, but still😅)

problem is you gonna get some nerd who pretends you didn't hit them "nah man i had force field on! didn't count!!!"
@windspast
@windspast 8 лет назад
+Phil Moufarrege That's where you are wrong. LARP is a honor base system much like air softing. It encourages chivalry and taking hits like an adult. Are there people who come with those attitudes? Sure, but they don't last long. if I hit someone, and they don't take the hit, I first give them the benefit of a doubt. Maybe they didn't feel it. We are all wearing armor. With adrenaline, it's easy to not feel shots. So I hit them again. If I can hit them once, then I can hit them twice. If they still don't acknowledge my shots, then I hit them harder and harder until they do. Others will do the same. But we will never accuse someone and say "I hit you, you're cheating." That's not what the game is about. They will eventually acknowledge the hits themselves because it's silly not to.

Thrifikionor except the fact that trans people aren’t mentally ill. Science has proved that. Being trans isn’t a mental illness in science anymore. It’s something that’s happened biologically in pregnancy that affects the brain of the person. Not something that “just happens” like depression or PTSD. It’s 2018. Wake up. The only people who hate trans now are assholes and religious idiots.
@joeyv9688
@joeyv9688 5 лет назад
Nebula you’re right. None of us would be “bitching” as you put it. However, I do say this to educate and not to belittle you or anyone else here, but only true marriage can be in the presence of God and with God. True marriage can ONLY be between a man and a woman, because God brought women and men together so they may fully join in their love. Not two men and not two women. Marriage is when a man, a woman, and the Lord our God all join and become one. The immorality and evil going on here is the furthest thing from marriage. I don’t want to sound mean or hateful. I’m only spending my time writing this, because I’m doing my part as a Christian. Keep this or flush it, but it’s up to you. The sin and evil doesn’t come from loving the same sex, but comes from the physical and lustful acts with the same sex. Love the sinner, but hate the sin, and remember that the Lord our God is forgiving and desires to forgive us all for our sins. Wouldn’t you desire to forgive your children for their wrongs? For those of you who would like to trash this message, I did my part and kept you reading so I hope I got you guys thinking. Thank you!!
@spazzofspeed
@spazzofspeed 5 лет назад
@@joeyv9688 Yeah, I'm not a christian and i have no sympathy for christians like you hiding behind your religion to punch down at marginalized groups, marriage can be a non-religious, socially motivated thing, and staying in your own little world about that is counter-productive. you ARE being hateful and bigoted, and being exactly the opposite of what jesus intended to bring upon the world. know your source material. Let people love eachother, don't be a stuck-up ass.
@anotherOneMore7
@anotherOneMore7 8 лет назад
Fantastic. I want to be a part of it! The only thing that is confusing to me is with LARP, Star Trek cons, cos-play, etc, there are always people commenting in the interviews, saying "people see us as weird, but we're just normal people." or "I'm not one of the people that are completely over the top like some." Why is it necessary to say this? There is no reason to prove normalcy. I agree that many ordinary boring people make fun of creative people that are involved in these activities. My response to that is to say yes, in the eyes of boring average people who can't think of anything more interesting to do than follow a major sports team while drunk, and gossip about people that are slightly different than them, I am a weirdo, and I hope that differentiation remains strong throughout my life. I have no desire to fit in with that level of normalcy, and no desire to convince them that I am just normal like them. I do not mean that in an antagonistic way, but we have nothing to prove to them whatsoever. I'd rather say hell yes, I am very different from you. Now if you don't have anything interesting to say or suggest as an activity, please let me get back to hanging around the fun creative people who are LARPing, SCAing, StarTreking, cosplaying, et al.

If the american LARPing-community invested more time in costume-making and costume-research, combined with more realistic weapons and armour, LARP wouldn't have the NERD-factor it has got in the U.S.A. ...

+IchhabezuvielRU-vidgegucktO_o : Yes, but it doesn't deserve it here ;-) No, really, I can see a change in the NERD-factor here in europe: If you are LARPing with a high level of costume-design and acting attitude, mixed with some basic research of cultural/historical background of your clothing, LARPing is quite accepted... But mixing different genres might be creativ, but it really looks NERDish in 95% of all cases... Just like the one in the video at 0:45 with the stupid NVA-helmet and the piercings, the modern protective gloves... this one would be called NERD even here in europe...

there are some LARP systems in the U.S. that focus more on realism but this group and a few other of the larger ones are more of a foam fighting group. they hit much harder with safer weapons. The groups that allow more real looking weapons are limited to medium or light contact fighting because of their insurance generally

@cyqry
@cyqry 7 лет назад
Foam wouldn't really fly well, but I've seen battle reenactments where rubber-tips were used. They hurt like a bitch if you're unarmoured but they fly as straight and true as a real arrow would.
@healingpotionthatkillsyoui1844
Fcreveryoung Dagorhir and Belegarth use exactly that. Real arrows that are blunted and then have a large foam tip grafted on. They fly surprisingly well and don't hit all that hard. I have been hit in the face by arrows numerous times and have suffered no ill effects.
@cyqry
@cyqry 7 лет назад
Depends on the build, I suppose... as well as the poundage of the bow you're firing it from. Foamnhave gas trapped in them so they tend to much lighter and also can push inwards (on themselves) when colliding to transfer less kinetic energy... hence why they hurt less.

One of the reasons that reenacters tend to have little respect for LARPers; you get too many people who pick up a massive slab of foam, slap it around at the speed of light and call it "fighting". Its either the style of fighting or the weapon of choice that they get horrifically wrong.

Not sure about LARP, but in historical battle reenactment, we use wooden arrows with specialized rubber tips. They still hurt like a bitch if they hit anything unarmoured, but they don't do any real damage and fly like a true arrow. As for foam, they wouldn't fly properly... or at least not in a realistic manner... which could shatter immersion pretty damn quickly.

@Kaiscoolness
@Kaiscoolness 8 лет назад
I don't have an answer for your question about latex weapons, but they're probably using the basic limb system, which goes as follows; If you get hit in your arm, you are unable to use that arm properly and must, for example, drop your weapon if you're holding one with that arm.
@IchhabezuvielYoutubegegucktO_o
Ok thx ^^ and whats about armor?
@Kaiscoolness
@Kaiscoolness 8 лет назад
+IchhabezuvielRU-vidgegucktO_o can't really say about the armor since it's not really shown, but maybe the limbs protected by the armor won't get handicapped when hit? Can't say if that's the case, but it might be.

Kaiscoolness Ok, I´m just interested in it because there are 2-3 big systems here in germany and very much little systems from little organisators.
@Roxar96
@Roxar96 8 лет назад
+IchhabezuvielRU-vidgegucktO_o In Belgium/France it's almost always the same : You've 1 or 2 hp / lock, the armour give more hp (from 1 to 3) and you are unable to use the part of your body "destroyed" ! Also piercing damages like arrows go through the armor

One thing i'd like to add to this is the "real HEMA fights". While HEMA is the closest thing we have to the real thing (as I understand), it still is not really going to do you much good in the modern real world..... just like the foam fighting. Also, a lot of people cannot afford it. If you go to SCA, then there is the problem with the fact that every fighter has armor is still inaccurate. They are all games in the end. None is better than the other. It is all personal preference. Play what you enjoy........ ( and have fun shit talking each other in good fun people who walk around with metal sticks XD)
