War Master, played by Derek Jacobi, meets River Song, played by Alex Kingston. Taken from 2019’s Diary of River Song Series 5 Buy Series 5 here: www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/the-diary-of-river-song-series-05-1743
I love River's reaction to the War Master. She engages in the banter, quips, and even pseudo flirting with the others in the box set. When the Jacobi incarnation appears though, its just restrained disgust and immediate concern about what he's going to do It does an effective job of demonstrating not only the War Master's reputation but that even River, someone who's willing to cross moral lines the Doctor won't, thinks he's absolutely monstrous.
@@matthewduncan8523 Something I've really grown to appreciate with Jacobi's incarnation is that while there are certain aspects of the Master's personality that are specifically emphasized, other parts of the character are there in more muted form. In Big Finish, the War Master is undoubtedly the most planing/manipulating focused variation of the character. Always with a scheme, and always focused on the end goal in his primary makeup. The MacQueen and Beevers versions had their plots of course, but the former seems more defined by his sadistic black humor and affable sensibilities towards the Doctor with the latter as the Master's unadulterated id; what with the clear lust for power and antipathy towards basically everyone around him. The interesting thing is that the War Master has those elements to him, its just that they're far more tucked away within the colder celestial architect that this regeneration is. He's quite capable of killing for amusement, and vast power is a constant want, but even those facets feel folded into his calculations and gambits in some fashion. I think one reason among many why he comes across as so dangerous because the same petty cruelties and vanities that have foiled him before are not nearly as much of a weak spot with this Master.
Jacobi is my favourite Master with Gomez as a close second, then Simm third, Delgado fourth and Dhawan fifth (he was honestly my favourite part of S12)
Once upon a time as a human and then as soon as he became timelord again he got shot and had to regenerate, yes. It was a shame. I liked that regeneration while it lasted.
@@joshuareynolds23 something that bothers me is river has met every version of the doc in big finish. Tenants doc multiple times. Yet how does it work with the doctor being very confused upon their first meeting in the library. I guess unless he met her after that point in his timeline but it seems pretty straightforward from the library to finale y'know. River is really the only thing that causes this issue. Even the war master and war doc and unit stories etc dont really mess things up at all like that. Still love the stories though river and tenant and ghosts who can hate that lol.
@@charlespettit7149 generally from what I've seen most doctors that she meets she has some kind of tech that prevents her true self from showing. For instance she had the wimple when she met 8 and, mostly travelled with his companions.
I dont think you'd like this story to be adapted for screen. It's too woke for you since the writer is gay and River Song is pansexual. If you're gonna have shit opinions, at least be consistent.
oh get lost with the "buhbuhbuh woke tv" patter, do you really hate diversity or do you hate the corporations that create artificial stories and hide behind the black and gay faces as a defense?
@@shortangel333 i think it's very obvious by his comment that it isn't too woke for him. who complained about captain jack? who complained about sky from midnight being a lesbian? who complained about mickey or martha being black? who complained about the black time lord in sound of drums? has anyone complained about don warrington playing rassilon in some audio dramas? when diversity is included in a way that either adds to the story or, at the very least, doesn't get in the way of the story, no one (save a handful of losers and genuine bigots) fucking cares. but ridiculous shit like retroactively making the doctor's character less interesting just to make the doctor a black girl and the founder of time lord society a woman or not bothering to give characters personalities because them being non-white is apparently enough and, more recently, turning davros into an uninteresting generic villain because wheelchair or having the doctor-donna thing resovled because trans, then it starts to get a bit fucking cringe
