The book War of the Worlds was written in 1898 by H.G. Wells. Its premise was if we were ever invaded by creatures from another planet they would be killed by bacteria, microbes and viruses that we grew an immunity to. Through our evolution.

There is more than meets the eye in this book my friend. War of the Worlds original book is also about mockery of Victorian British Empire and its superstition about being powerful enough to withstand anything. Wells knew what he was doing and IMO his description of post-apo London under the boot of Martians is absolutely horrifying, especially from the perspective of protagonist.

This movie is based on a novel written by H.G. Wells in 1897, I read it as a child. There is also an audiobook with songs by established musicians, some pretty good songs there. There is also a movie about a panic in the United States in 1938 caused by a radio theater adaptation of this story.
@krashd
@krashd Год назад
The 'panic' has since been proven to be something of a fallacy, it turns out that a few less-than-reputable newspapers of the day (today we call those kinds of papers 'tabloids') tried to cash in on the radio play's authenticity by saying there was panic in the streets when really there was none. It still made Orson Welles a household name though since it was he that dreamed up the idea of presenting the story as though it was an ongoing disaster happening live. He was only 24 at the time and won countless plaudits for doing it, a small teaser of the great things he would do later.

As a result there was panic after those who miss took it for a news broadcast started sharing these false reports with friends, family and neighbors.

I like this movie because the hero is a working class (blue collar) guy, he lives in a tiny house with tiny gardens, you rarely see that in US movies - the protagonist in every US movie always lives in a house with 6 bedrooms (all with en-suites), where it can take you a good 45 seconds to walk from your room to the kitchen. In a typical house you can get to the kitchen in about 6 seconds, 3 if you jump over the bannister above the stairs.

The giant three legged things are machines these aliens use to invade earth,they appear both mechanical and biological at the same time, in this movie there are actually three classes of machine, the first one that appear is a "fighter" they don't have cages under their hood but are equipped with a dual heat ray, the second one that appear in the ferry scene the one that sank the ferry is an "Uber-Pod" they are biggest and has five headlights they are equipped with tentacles and cages as well as a pair of heat rays they also appear in the battle on the hill scene, in the ferry scene were you saw two tripods capturing people and the one that took Rachel in the abduction scene is a "harvester" they are smaller and lacks the heat ray but is equipped with a tentacle with a camera in the tip and a cage, In the scene were you two though that the machines are searching the houses, they are actually preparing the planet for terraforming, the harvesters capture people for their blood and use it to fertilize the red weed, Wich are the plant like life form from their home world, thus they are terraforming the planet to make it like their own, in the end the bacteria are the one that finished off the invaders, the invaders are not able to resist the microscopic organisms that our body can co-exist with for there no bacteria from were they came from
@cobrazax

im not sure they are different versions. i think they all have these features as optional deployables when needed. i do think they also have bacteria, just not our kind and thus are vulnerable to them. with viruses i doubt they would be especially vulnerable to them as they are are host specific, more specialized, unlike bacteria.

@The Homies This is a explanation about the heat rays in this version. Steven Spielberg's 2005 movie, the heat-ray was a blueish-white arc of light that turns its victim into dust and leaves their clothes intact yet destroys and burns everything else like typical laser weaponry heat-ray associated with. The reason of this is the heat-ray appears to be a high energy coherent emission of microwaves not unlike Maser that causes the water in the human body to superheat into very high temperature steam, which then causes the victim to explode into ash as it instantly expands. The emitters are portrayed by two crescent shaped "arms" on the tripod's head.

Wells 2: the people did not bury the tripods, the aliens did, millions of years in the past 3: the red weed is the blood vessels of the dead people. The aliens mission was to eat/drink as much of the human blood as possible to insure their species survival, but our blood is like poison to them considering the viruses that can be transmitted 4: the aliens were in capsules during every lightening storm being transported into the tripods

When the original aired on the radio, I guess some people panicked but my grandparents said that they didn't know one single person who freaked out. They told me everyone in their town understood it was just a story, and when the newspaper articles came out talking about how people thought it was real, they joked with their friends about how dumb people in other towns were. So basically, this story has been sensationalized literally since it happened way back then. 😂

So in the original book from 1898 the Martians came in these big canisters. They were kinda like squids, just a big brainy head, a stretched out flat part in the back as it's ear, 2 huge black lid less eyes, no nose, and a v shaped mouth and hooked lip. There was no chest, just a few chin tentacles for grabbing and a couple leg tentacles for movement. The Martians didn't eat food, they had no stomach. Instead they fed on blood directly. They would siphon blood and inject it into themselves letting the nutrients from the food we digested feed them. The movie skips this and seems to use blood as fertilizer for the weed as terraforming

People think too much about themselves, as a species, in the face of an alien invasion, we have nothing with which we can answer, an advanced civilization, and this is not pessimism, but reality, such is life.

I love the start of this movie, great until the middle. The middle bit I wasnt into however I did love how the humans won. It made sense to me. However if we know this as a race that we'd need protection going to another planet. An alien civilisation who can travel pretty easily through space should also know this. So thats the downside to the ending.

Fun fact: The Tripods needed a specific type of human blood to create those red plants, which is why some were captured and others were pulverized. This means that Ray survived the first Tripod attack only because he had the right type of blood (In fact, both he and his daughter were captured despite Ray throwing a grenade at them.)

Fact? Where did you see this? It doesn't even make sense that something so ultra-specific would make a difference as food for their plants, that the aliens would be able to magically discern who had a blood type, or why beings with such technology would be caught with with their pants down with germs being all around said blood. No, there is no mention at all of such a matter in the book or this movie, and this sounds like something some fan dreamed up, in an attempt to make sense of the chaos that is meant to not make sense. This adaptation changed a lot about the aliens from the book, but neither one clarify the aliens’ aims. This movie implies some sort of colonial long-game, to at least install weapons/terraformers on planets "of future interest" or perhaps even seeded early life in the first place. Which of course, is kinda goofy, and clearly an attempt to recreate the original idea that they came from Mars, an idea that now is even goofier. Anyway, the only thing that is plainly obvious is they were attempting to destabilize humanity, depopulate them, and then begin terraforming, using remaining humans as fertilizer, and humans were to them literally no more sophisticated than cow shit. Specific blood types? Come on. Random chaos, Daniel. Random chaos.

A pity you didn't react to the original version which was far superior.

The original radio story War of the Worlds was one of the earliest great pranks of the 20th century. The chaos that it caused was unreal. Had everyone shitting their pants.

HA! i was just wondering if anyone was reacting to this movie. was awesome to work on so many years ago. some background, when adapting the old book, the idea was the aliens were desperate, and needed a place asap, they had seed places with machine when they were a powerhouse ages ago. now they need a place to live and we are in the way. a lot of the first half of the movie i very "civilians escaping a foreign invasion" vibe for that reason,. esp. eastern Europe during ww2 was also the first time a movie had real m1 Abrams in it, not just other tanks dressed up as them. steven got upset halfway through making this movie, around the cage scenes, because he didn't like making a more horror like movie. a lot of the ideas were taken from his original idea for ET, a much darker, scarier story. we had sooooo much more tripod footage that isn't seen because of this. wish there was a way to have an extended cut. really went into the different tripods in the movie (there are 3 types, some have 4 eyes like seen on top of the hill when Robby "dies". harvester, and attack machines. the red weed was them terraforming, when the og book as written, we thought mars was red because our plants are green, those must be red. we took that idea, they couldn't terraform fast enough, and their plant life wasn't adapted to our planet. HG Well the book author believed disease the common cold something we shouldn't look at as to be destroyed, but a monument that years of evolution and immunity is our triumph. and protects us form any Xeno invader better than any weapon ever could.
