Due to the Javelin, those birds died. Rest in peace birds. You were the real heroes in this part. Without you no one would have realized that the shields were down.
2:00 bottom right. The guy flips over the car and rolls onto the ground, ultimately getting crushed by the falling tripod. Good going. You ALMOST survived the apocalypse.
Actually, I think it was more getting into a bracing position getting ready to fire and charging up for a shot.... Only... It didn't get the chance because it received a gift from Ratheon
I just realized rewatching this movie that during the Ferry sequence and after one of the Tripods are standing over the hills after the birds fly towards them, the birds never land on it and only circle above it because of the shield. Nice attention to detail.
It was demonstrated in the post-basement scene (Rachel's abduction) that the shields can be bypassed by slow-moving objects such as humans on foot. So Ray's bird thing was a non-starter; he and the soldiers just got lucky that his false logic happened to coincide with a real tech problem, but they certainly were not identifying the correct evidence for it. It's a fluke, basically. (And flukes are tiny parasitic creatures wot cause sickness in bigger animals too, so there's another movie thematic link which still doesn't mean Ray had drawn the correct conclusion by the correct logic path). Disappointing version of a story that will *never* be told authentically.
@@KrillLiberator shields allowing slow objects through them happens in Independence Day too: there's a scene in which David (Jeff Goldblum) places a Coke can on the captured alien craft with his bare hand, and just then one of the characters tries to shoot that can, which is then protected by the shield. However, if that were the case it would be easy to release balloons with C4's attached to them so they stick to the alien vehicles and then BOOM!!
I've always felt sorry for those guys you see rolling over the car at 2:01 they survived the entire invasion just to be crushed by a dead tripod in the last few minutes of the film...
I really like that they introduced the shield again (like in the 1953 movie). The reason why they included shields is pretty obvious: when the book was written, there were no airplanes nor missiles. You would need a good ass canyon in order to take that shit down. If the invasion as described in the book happened today, the aliens wouldn't last a week.
They Aliens always knew what they're dealing with before Invading. Each time period has a version to match Earth's weapons. Only constant is they never accounted for the invisible threat.
Actually, the book was completely unrealistic. They had some damn good artillery in the 1890s, when the book was set. If the aliens had no force-fields they could have blasted them to pieces. H.G.Wells was a non-military middle-class intellectual who had NO idea about military technology. Almost everything he imagined in his science-fiction books was unrealistic. George Orwell did a very good take-down of him.
Apparently a lot of people hated her character because they thought she was super annoying, but that's literally EXACTLY how a child would act in these situations. They're basically helpless
@@lauvasquez8030 I mean, yes, you're right, but at the same time, in a movie about aliens invading the earth and the possible destruction of the human race, a kid acting like a kid is pretty low on my list of things I want the movie to focus on. Which is why her character was so hated.
@@matthewjones39 Of course but this is the first large scale war where they're being used against a massive army of tanks, and absolutely decimating them.
"The Javelin is the key, load the gustav, its gotta be a top kill" Its cool that thr script writers know what they are talking about in this scene, that wasnt bs. You can see both javelin and carl gustav manpads being used to bring down the tripods. And also the javelin has a top attack mode usually used against tanks, hence what he said. Pretty cool stuff
I think he says "its gonna be a tough kill". RU-vid CC matches up with that too. None of the javelins use top attack mode in this scene, all direct attack.
"GOT A LOCK?" "I GOT A LOCK!" "FIRE THE JAVELIN!'- AWESOME!!!, when they FINALLY took those fuckers down i was fist pumping, cause you watch the army get WASTED earlier and now their kicking ass, very gratifying scene
hell yeah, my son is into sci fi and my husband is a military junkie so i get front row to every alien movie out there lol, battle la was pretty good it was good to see a movie where the aliens dont just roll over the military, they fought like people so it made it nice and balanced
"Later when their bodies were examined in the laboratories, it was found that they were killed by the putrefactive and disease bacteria against which their systems were unprepared. . . slain, after all man's defenses had failed, by the humblest thing that God in His wisdom put upon this earth." -Orson Welles
this isn't a Christian movie your bible says nothing about alien life so if alien life invaded us and tried to kill us your god wouldn't do anything about it because it would of proven your god as a myth
kelly wilson whitehead This is just a quote but I'll point out three things: First: he's not MY God, he's OUR God whether you believe in him or not but I assure you he is real. Second: No the bible doesn't say anything about alien life but it does tell us that with God's help we can save ourselves from harm. Third: I suggest you take a refresher course in third grade english so you can learn how to use proper grammar and syntax.
I love how different the tripod sound is in this scene. It's gone from "Run you filth! Your end is nigh! 😈👽" to "Please... Is there... anyone else... alive?!? 😷💀"
The crew probably realized their shields were dropped and that they were too sick to maneuver the tripod through all the buildings away from the increasingly swarming soldiers. I think the horn blast was a desperate call for help to any tripods still in the area that could fight. Tripods are downright fragile without shields and I think that the crew was acutely aware how dangerously vulnerable they were at that point.
@@JakvsMetalheads999 They're not vulnerable though, This one got hit with a ton of Javelins and it looked like the armor took it pretty well. even after it crashes through the building it's mostly intact. I think it went down because it was sick and being hit consecutive times threw it off balance. Of course more Javelins would kill it eventually, but it's still quite tanky seemingly
@@C-R-l-M-S-O-N There might have been no major external damage, that makes it seem like the armor just tanked the shots, but knowing a thing or two about how AT weapons work against armor I can assure you, that thing got wrecked, without a doubt
At the end, in the tunnel when Rachel starts screaming, it's like a different kind of scream. Like the explosions and such triggered PTSD or something.
Girl's gonna need a hella amount of therapy after this is done. People complain about her screaming but at that age that reaction is to be expected. First time those horns went off I wanted to scream.
I love this little change that when the shields are off, the Tripos are easy prey. This invasion is actually pretty damn rudimentary and far too ''rough'' from a strategy POV, the martians are just rushing B with over reliance on their shields. They have no air support, no infantry, no recon, no artillery, not even an HQ or something to fall back. They were straight up thinking the shields would be enough to conquer the planet.
The reason most every modern take on War of the Worlds since the 1953 movie is because the producer actually talked to military reps who read the book, who told him that Earths military would have no trouble handling an invasion with nukes and modern weaponry. Hence, adding the shields.
@@dylanmckenzie8566 Yeah, as crude as our weapons might be physics and chemistry are mean SoBs, we literally have to invision the impossible (heat rays and energy shields) in order to set up a fantastical foe with which to face. Though I feel that dding the shields meant we missed the sense in the book where humanity fights back only for the martians to adapt (black smoke launchers would have been terrifying).
Dozens of soldiers aiming guns and keeping their eyes on the tripod: “OMG, what do we do?!” Tom Cruise as a lone civillian: “LOoK aT thE GodDaMN BIrDs!!!!”
Regret... regret... reget... Dear humanity... We regret being alien bastards... We regret coming to Earth... And we most defiantly regret the corps just blow up our raggedy-ass Tripod! Ooh rah!
Jonas Whitt The M-16A2 has t he M203, as add on... www.colt.com/Catalog Military/Products/ColtM20340mmGrenadeLauncher.aspx Plus unit tactics, and hitting weak points in armor... US victory. A .50 sniper round/machine gun round vs stormtroopers = US overkill victory.
***** Practically every single rifle the marines and the army uses has a grenade launcher, however if they miss, then they are boned as they will have to open up their ammo pouch, grab a grenade and insert it into the rifle allowing the storm trooper to shoot them with the blaster.
Almost 17 years from release now, and 6 years from this comment and the movie even still holds up! Hey any person 6 years from now, please tell me it still looks good?!
The aliens inside: "Sir, sir, sir !!! we have a mechanical problem. that God damn flying creature broke our shield system" The alien's captain: "Start honking the horn !!! make them fly away"
After all this happened, I hope Ray got an agent, wrote a book, and it was an international best seller and got made into a movie and oh no I've gone cross-eyed.
So does this mean when the Vulcans land after observing a human reach warp speed for the first time it'll be like "live long and pros...aak! gasp! gaah!" (falls over dead)?
+olli.stirlingite And she won an award for basically screaming the whole way through. That right there was when I decided that awards for acting are pure token bullshit. I was 15 when this came out.
We need to make a rule that all secondary characters under 18 in action movies die in the first 5 minutes. Seriously, like 95% of problems would just never happen to the protagonist.
I just realized the crows are an early indication the alien in the tripod is dying, they were circling around it waiting for it to die so they can feed on it
This was the best part of the movie cuz basically thought the whole entire movie there was darkness and now it’s bright sunnny and cloudy basically saying ur gonna win just get over it
Giannis Voskidis noooooooo, its because I work at Raytheon, people who produce many different weapons including the Javelin. That makes me an weapons expert, or at least on the weapons I help build.
The aliens didn't have any immunity to the bacteria and whatnot on Earth so after a while the operators of the tripods began dying off which in turn caused some of the functions to stop working.
Tbh, If you look carefully at 01:58 , you will see a Solider holding Javelin’s Locking Module and left the Rocket Pod getting crushed by tripod after firing at it , what a nice detail
I feel like we need an updated remake of this, set in January 2020 in Wuhan. The robots rise menacingly from the ground, immediately begin stumbling around, and die about 8 minutes later. Meanwhile the WHO, using funding provided by a number of large robotics investors, conducts an investigation and determines that they were naturally occurring robots and tells the world to just carry on and not worry about it. I mean, it would have to be a short film, but it would totally win tons of awards.
The javelin missile doesn't exit at full speed from the tube launcher in straight line like that IRL. it uses soft ejection to exit the missile canister then the booster ignite and the missile is getting speed and altitude. here it looks more like a Stinger missile.
Haha! Yes! I just caught this part earlier and the music sounds like "The Droid Invasion" theme from the Phantom Menace! (well of course it is the same composer) But yes! This totally sounds like the Droid Invasion music. :')
As a fan of H.G. Wells' original novel. I loathe this scene. In the novel, London(which Boston is standing in for in the version) was absolutely empty, no people(that were alive anyway) aside from The Journalist, with the Martian war cry of "Ulla" sounding eerily throughout the derelict city . The martians succumbing to Bacteria was made clear by their machines standing erect and motionless, very damaged as well, with the birds pecking and tearing at the remains of the Martians inside the cockpits of each, the Journalists discovers this right as he's about to run straight up to one of the Fighting Machines, hoping that one strike from the heat ray would end it all. It was subtle, very well done and clever. But here, the military just shoots them down and the martians' succumbing to microbes is far too downplayed so as to be an afterthought.
***** Still, a little atmosphere and subtlety in a scene where it is the most appropriate goes a long way. Just having them blow up the Fighting Machine feels not only anticlimactic and in your face, but it makes the Martians seem a hell of a lot less menacing. Its like there is no appreciation for the art of storytelling these days.
Hania Enapay To be honest, I don't see this as a remake of the book, I see it as more of a a tribute. I can see where you're coming from though. It can be very annoying when you've read something you really like, only to have i portrayed on screen in a different way.
***** I always saw it as just another adaptation and of course changes are inevitable, but one thing you must always expect from an adaptation is for it to at least capture the essence of the source material. And in a few moments, the Spielberg film manages to do this quite well, but in others it just falls flat. Well, on the bright side, at least its better than the Asylum version with C. Thomas Howell. But its not as good as the 1953 version or any of Pendragon's adaptations. And it certainly doesn't stand up to Jeff Wayne's musical version or Orson Welles' radio adaptation.
You can tell there was a hint of a military mind in this making. At around 1:21 you can see the A gunner and tow gunner check the back blast area. It’s something that is engrained into soldiers before firing armament like this. Nice attention to detail.
