I really like the character development in this movie, they're just an ordinary family with some problems and then boom, the machines crawl out of the ground and their problems don't matter anymore.

It's a sci-fi movie with disaster and horror movies elements. It's not meant to show big fights between humans and aliens.
Back in 2005, this was decent acting, but by today's mediocre, everyone-deserves-an-award standards? It's definitely Oscar worthy. Better than half the inclusive crap they've been handing out awards to the past 10 years.
Yup. My dad was the kind of person who didn't do the "real shit" like emotional support, bein' there. Y'know, spend quality time with his family, but he used to work all day long, making money and being tired all the time. He still believe's he did an amazing job and so his friends. It sucks, to be honest. I still hate when some of his pals say "Hey, your father is an example for this society, you're so lucky to be his son". Yeah, buddy... because you don't know him in his intimacy. Fuck it. He was an amazing provider, completely flawless at that. Can't deny it and a big part of me is grateful. But a real father does more than just making money to buy stuff! I'm afraid I'll be exactly the same if I decide to raise a family. And the worst of all is I'm starting to understand him now that I'm a working adult. Apparently, the only way he knew to express love... was providing. Maybe he was terrified of having that father-son conversations. The few we had during my youth were pretty lame. And now, when the opportunity shows up to talk about life, he just says "Let's go out and have a couple of drinks, son. This old man needs his old venom". Well, he'll never change. I still love him... somehow... FUCK! Sorry for wasting your time with this large comment.

Many foreign people think that the capital of the US is New York or that the capital of Brazil is Rio de Janeiro. I guess people just assume that the most know city will be the biggest city and those tend to be the capital cities. The difficult one is Canada though, no one knows whether the capital is Ottawa or Toronto
I'm European and I too doubt whether the capital of Australia is Sydney or Canberra. Even in an European country like Turkey I don't know if its capital is Ankara or Istambul.
Sure we do. This style hasn't gone away at all. If anything, the 90s was the end of particular, society-wide styles. I see people wearing every kind of style you can think of these days, minus hippie-era shit.
I will never forget seeing this in the theater when it first came out (I was 15) and how pretty much everyone in the audience gasped at the same time when Robby put his Red Sox cap on. Lol.

It wasn't always that way, it only started with the kids born in the 90s, any kid born before that they were allowed to legally spank if they swore, at least thats how it was for my generation.
Moral of the story: don't do your homework because aliens can come any second and all your hours of hard work will be for nothing. Enjoy yourself while you can and screw school!

Guess what movie Justin Chatwin would infamously go to star in? Dragonball evolution. Idk if it was already in the works and the designer put it in as an easter egg, if it was just a popular alien- looking toy at the time they wanted to put in, or if it was just from a grab-bag of kids toys. Regardless of the reason, that's pretty funny to see.
It's amazing to me how when what could have been the end of the world starts happening the son is still in this mode. But it's probably accurate. Great acting to.
Hasn't anyone seen this movie? Tom Cruise's character is actually the real jerk, not his son Robbie. He doesn't care about his family, walks off his job, is downright DEAF to his kids' wants and needs, and insinuates flirting with other women, which is is probably why his wife divorced him. The point of the movie was to make Tom Cruise look like a jerk.

He loves his kids. There all he has left a father who didn't care wouldn't drag his kids in a stolen car to get to safety. Of course his only son is troubled given he went threw a parental transition and tries his best. One seen that proves my point is the hill scene were Robbie wanted to help fight but ray didn't want him to because he was his son, he even encouraged him to stay for his sister instead of him. And not knowing the fate of his son he cried out for his name thinking he was dead.

If you're a fan of the Dragonball series,you should know that that little blue toy on the shelf is Emperor Pilaf from Dragonball! Really wierd coincedence considering Justin Chatwin (Robbie) played Goku in the live action movie. This was quite a while before the Dragonball movie right?

I don't like Tom (generally) as an actor. But I really liked him in this film. Pretty good character development. Going from a non-interactional, aloof dad who 1. didn't know that his own daughter didn't like peanut butter, to 2. running from the tripods with his kids, to 3. letting himself be abducted in order to possibly save his daughter (who had been abducted), to 4. being situationally aware in the chaos to care for his children and inform a member of the US Army that an alien tripod no longer had shields.
The transformation of Ferrier as a father is amazing. From Robbie blowing him off at the beginning of the movie to the celebratory hug at the end in Boston. Absolutely amazing movie
The line where the kid says, “You’re an asshole. I hate coming here”. I always think of these 2 lines when my husband sits next to me to eat dinner. I feel like he’s doing it out of obligation more than want. He’s selfish and not thoughtful or conscientious. He just does the same things, the same way .. every day. Very boring and tedious. Like the living dead 🧟♂️… Hence the afore mentioned comment abt always thinking of these 2 lines every night around dinner time 🙄😖😞 I want to say so badly, “No thanks 😀.. maybe next time 👋🏼 “. But that would “disrupt” the harmony and “cause tension”. Oh God… make me independently wealthy so I can get out of this mess !!
First - you can really see Tom's not holding a ball in his hand at 1:26. Second - who the heck plays catch in the backyard right in front of windows?!?
This movie was moreso good on the humanity side of its scenes. The family dynamic, dialogue more than the aliens and tripods themselves. I didn't care much for the scenes showing the tripods or aliens. The dialogue scenes are so good in this movie. Also good are the scenes showing the HUMANS/people.
Why American teenagers today doesn't look like Robbie anymore ? Why they always want to look like Pitbull or Justin Bieber in drugs? The way how Robbie looks like is the kind of an American teenage guy I want to be my boyfriend when I was just a 6 year old boy back in 2005.
