Exactly, this movie just gives me dread in a way probably none can ever compare to, there’s just a scale and atmospheric quality that few horror films if any can match. Most horror films I just think all I have to do is locate somewhere else where the ghost/monster/killer resides, or at least fun fast enough away from it. Here, nowhere is safe, whether it’s the threat from the alien invaders, or the opportunistic humans made desperate by the situation, this world is truly nightmarish. Probably the only thing I would genuinely describe as “epic horror”.
Oh they did (I saw it 3 times), but the majority... No doubt Spielberg's version is one of the most underrrated Scf-Fi films of all time and should have been a bigger box office hit. I believe Tom Cruises's interview with TODAY's Matt Lauer to which went badly over the discussion of anti-depressant medications to treat post-partum depression just 5-days befor the opening the movie created a damper on the success of the movie. Which cauased a riff between Spielberg and Cruise ever since, but their recent interaction at the 2023 luncheon gives hope they have reconciled.
Fun fact: the studio purchased a decomissioned passenger jet and had it transported to their backlot (the shipping charges cost more than the purchase of the aircraft did). They then broke it into pieces for the set. It then became part of the Universal Studio tour. The crashed plane looks so real because it was a real plane.
Me randomly realizing this really was a great movie. I saw it in theaters at 12-13, one of the most intense theater experiences ever. Dakota Fanning made this movie. Her fear was so real.
I had anxiety issues myself as a child so I could really empathize with Rachel. It’s really disturbing the amount of hate she gets, like there are people wishing death on a literal child just for being scared.
The news lady explained what happened that night in the next scene. The 83rd mechanized national guard unit engaged a tripod out in the pine barrens in the distance that night. She explained that every round they fired at the tripods were stoped by the shield. The sounds in this scene were actually the rounds blowing up from hitting the shield and the tripod firing back. The plane crash is still up for speculation but probably got caught up in the cross fire.
I never really understood what was actually going on in this scene, but was terrified nonetheless. I always thought the tripod lightning was striking nearby and that it hit the plane, because of the similar sound effects used for both. Then I realized it was tripods shooting down the plane. This scene is mesmerizing in that you have zero clue what is going on outside yet you're utterly terrified
1:39 The terror sounds of an American airliner fighting to stay in the sky..,if you listen closely you can hear the last screams of the passengers. O.O
It's almost like the aircraft was pulled out of the sky before it was shot down. You can hear the engines straining for a minute before the plane actually crashes.
I've isolated the plane and tripod sounds, without dialogue and almost without stuff falling around ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cE3b3N4CfIE.html
I'm assuming that the plane was shot down from a distance because we don't hear the tripods themselves, but we hear their lazer weapons whizzing by just before the plane crashes. Also in the next morning we hear the distant horns of probably the same tripods that I'm assuming shot down the plane, now coming to finish off anyone who survived the crash.
Despite the laser's deadly effect and exploxion these was and the huge impact with the ground.... weak change that someone from the plane to be survived!
0:28 Something about the way that Robbie (Justin Chatwin) stands in front of Ray (Tom Cruise) is so epic. The movie hints at Robbie's youthful heroism thought the film and I thin kthis is another great example.
They preserved the plane crash site for exhibit on the universal Hollywood studios tour. I saw that site in real life. It shows how much work goes into set design for any production. What a thriller of a film
Those initial flashes at the start were Tri-pods trying to shoot the plane down and the frequency and amount of flashes kinda indicates just how many tri-pods are in the area. They may not be close to any of our main cast but its likely they are only 1 to 2 miles away, maybe less?
Funny enough one of my favorite scenes in the movie. They did a great job at establishing such tension because you have no idea what’s going on beyond those walls.
I say the plane wasn't shot down. The sounds as the flashes were happening is from the lightning. Remember at the beginning of the movie after the lightning flashed, all power, and communications were out and no one could drive, call, or use electricity. I believe the plane's systems got scrambled and shut down by the lightning leaving them all to helplessly plunge to the ground.
Towards the end just before the plane crashed it sounded like the engines were straining really hard as if the plane was fighting to stay airborne Such a terrifying sound to this day
Doubtful the plane had to been shot down as for planes can still glide for a period of time without power and fuel that plane came straight down like a meteor.
Man, even after knowing whats gonna happen, this scene just absolutely terrifies me , and that line from the kid in the pitch-black grave like scene, are we still alive? just genius!
Oh I remember that I wasn’t able to watch this movie in theatres but a few months later my dad bought the DVD and a modern home theatre at that time and I almost shit myself in this scene because of the sound, gosh I wish I could have watched it in theatres.
I assume that this plane was already in the air before the aliens landed in the tripods. If the sun direction was indeed going west during the 'storm' on day 1, the aliens came into the tripods by afternoon. It could have been flying for twelve to fourteen hours already if it is midnight in this scene. Perhaps the plane crew were confused why communication was not possible with the airport towers and searched for another airport to land. If this was the only plane still flying after so many hours, because in the entire movie this was the only plane that was still up there, it must have come from either Europe or somewhere from the Pacific. When Ray fled with his children, Robbie even says on the highway why there were no helicopters or airplanes flying.
You missed the subtle hints that the lighning storm did not awaken all the tripods at the same time. Robbie is watching tv, where one channel says that Ukraine got hit by a lightning storm, followed by emp, followed by an earthquake, around 4am. Another channel is reporting a similar event from japan, before Ray shuts it off. Meaning that while they were playing baseball and while Ray was sleeping, the invasion had been going on for hours already. Not every city lost it's electricity, so maybe that plane was full of refugees from some city that heard about the alien attack? Imagine escaping to america from the invasion, only to find out that no place was safe.
@@Peekarica There are a few fun things to notice on rewatches. Like for example in the scene where the ground breaks, it took me a while to notice that the ground rotates in a perfect circle, as a homage to the cylinders unscrewing in the original book.
They probably issues a NOTAM once they found the nature of the storms so these guys probably knew but they definitely didn't have amy contact with anyone after it started
Although Robbie was irritating to Ray (every opportunity 😮) He was a hero The way he saved the people on the ferry and wanted to fight with the army ❤❤
It happened to me last year, and it was quite strong and was flashing a lot to the point it knocked the power out. I couldn't help but think about this movie at that moment. 0_0
Now been thinking, i always wonder why the entire roof of the plane was gone, plus the lack of bodies and i got a theory that the plane was being held by the tripods, probably capturing its passengers then leave it to crash, because it doesn’t make sense how long it took the plane to crash but also the jet engine sound was waay too close to the
Can someone explain how the Plane crashed? Did it lose power? (cause at the start of the movie every area that was struck with lighting lost power) or did the aliens shot it down?
Good special effects but some of the most annoying characters ever. I rooted for the aliens. Even if the germs didn't get them, they probably would've left after having to deal with T9m Cruise's family.
I think a real plane crash would feel quite differently than this wild mixture of light and sound. Spielberg delivered more some kind of a tunnel of horror here.
0:51 - 1:35 This sound was horrible and camera movement make me feeling everything’s gonna to be terrible happening 1:37 And the explode firer make me burning my hand. Score: 9/10 Good director by “Steven Spielberg”
I don’t know even know I was a kid I would think I would want to be in that part of the basement from the very beginning plus I would want a gun ok two guns !!!
Every scene with the screaming girl & emotionally reactive & always putting his family at risk boy was terrifying 😳 who could deal with them in a situation like that & be able to survive?
This would have been a much better movie if Spielberg cut the father-son teen angst crap, that was completely unnecessary to the movie and was annoying.
A hover craft crash???? Cmon! Never heard something going 500 mph take so long to crash at full volume from the onset. Oh well. Makes for good cinema for those without a sense of physics, audio perception, common sense. Ha!
Someone theorized that maybe the tripods held the plane in the air ripping it open to get the passengers out hence why it took so long to actually crash, it does sound like the engines were straining I wonder if that’s what really happened It sucks we never got an explanation of this scene
@@brizzle3903that's the only thing I can figure, otherwise there's no reason why it would have the engines straining for that long and the absence of the Doppler effect of the plane approaching. Could also explain why there were no survivors around the crash site
@@brizzle3903 I Believe the plane was actually falling a part, so that loudy jet engine sound we hear, might be pieces of the engine that fell from the plane before the actual plane fell off, if you see the cockpit burns it proves that the plane was indeed going down, and the lack of survivors, well... we know after this scene that there is a river with a lot corpses, so those could be the passengers that got depressurized, i also noticed that the only corpses in the plane are people that probably had their belt pretty tight, but died at the crash
Shot the plane, the plane glide down ,two to three tripod was able to grap in somehow and hold it and you can hear the jet enjine screaming ,while doi g that the capture or vaporise human and let the plane drop. 😂😂😂just kidding .
