Wolfie, your aircraft attacks will go much better if you plan both their ingress and egress routes. (more damage and fewer losses) The reason they have such awful results at times is you're bidding them to attack while the approach is bad. BTW, line abreast for skip bombing, try to come in from abeam - don't skip bomb from bow or stern on; you're just going to miss. Line ahead for bow or stern level attacks. Make sure you order your groups to individually attack from about 4k-5k yds (about 4k-5k meters also to ensure they line up better. Waiting for the last second to order individual attacks means they lack the ability to line up well and either drop without effect or don't drop at all (I've seen the AI do both).
I was a little flabbergasted @ 24:19 - "Possibly the 3 destroyers ...". HELLO! You have aircraft right there! Go tactical and identify them and make the right decision.
You don't have to hold back on the subs for us, they're valuable recon assets. If anything go into tactical mode/map with a sub when your near an enemy task force to confirm what's in the task force and don't attack👍 P.S. I do believe the ai will not skip bomb when told to attack at low level, pretty sure you have to manually do it. Saw a video where it was done with manually dropping.
I saw a video about 1.5-2 years ago where the AI dropped torpedos from low altitude directly on a players ship. Big ol explosion than an almost immediate sinking alarm iirc. I don't remember if the AI was maybe trying to torp a ship behind it but I thought it was kinda funny at the time.
The sub...wow! It's the little-known I-500, a captured Gato-class submarine. She would be the only unit of her class until 1945, when the Japanese captured several subs when Germany surrendered in 1945, thereby giving them the I-501 through I-506. 😆 Also, the DDs @10:14 are Akatsuki-class, not Hatsuharu-class. And that strike against the Tone-class CA? Dayum!
What's your source for the I-500, I'm curious, as I've never heard of that before. From what I can tell, the only Gato class the Japanese ever operated was the JS Kuroshio, which was lent to the JMSDF in the 1950s. I cannot find any reference to a submarine by the name of I-500. I can find Ro-500, which was a German U-Boat transferred to the IJN in late 1943 as part of an exchange program. Ro-501-506 were a mix of several classes of Kriegsmarine submarines, and even some Italian submarine that operated under the Nazi flag after the capitulation of Italy.
@@luked7525 😆It was a joke. There was no I-500. There was an RO-500, which was one of two German submarines 'gifted' to Emperor Hirohito by Adolf Hitler. She survived the war and was scuttled post-war. She's also one of the few Japanese & German submarines to have a character in the anime "Kantai Collection".
Correct target identification increases your accuracy a lot - a Momi class DD is around 280 feet in length, compared to a Akatsuki class @ 380. That extra 100 ft is huge in targeting.
Loving this series. I've always found the early war clashes in and around the Java Sea pretty fascinating, and from a gameplay perspective it's cool to see odd units like the Dutch B-10s and Brewster Buffalos in action.
Its unfortunate that WoS hasn't developed the sort of dynamic flooding that U-boat and Silent Hunter were able to accomplish. The first sub was definitely sinking uncontrollably, without the depth to crush her you're left to deal with a submarine twice
I love the "kitbashed" comment, my best friend and navy vet is a professional model builder, he explained that term to me 20 years ago. His shop is chock full of all kinds of model kits he bought over the ages to use for various projects over the years.
Dutch subs are historically one of the most valuable assets at this time. Having 2 of them for the whole campaign wouldn't skew things much(imho). Nice to see the B-10s;even though they seem to be underperforming lately. Is it even possible for ABDA to acquire a Capital ship in the game scenario? For the future, Dutch Courage, Sir.
For anyone wondering about the submarine around 3:00 I went and checked and the mod uses a modified Gato class model to represent both Kiraisen class (I-121 class) and Kaichu V class (Ro-29 class) submarines and they both seem to have the same stats. I guess this is a very unfinished part of the mod.
Oh the Tone was an interesting ship. After the refit she was equipped with 3 fighter planes to increase its AA capabilities. It was one of the many attempts of the Japanese to fill the hole made by the loss of their carriers at Midway and by that, their inferiority in air power and control.
This new mod really take this series to a new height. It is nice to see what the Allied struggled through the darkest days of the war in the 1941- early 1942 period. The balance of power was completely on the Japanese side. Surprised to see there was no zeros plan in the air combat. The zeros would scorch through any Allied planes in the beginning of the war.
Don't forget- this is early in the war, A6Ms were just starting to come out. A5Ms and Ki-27's were the mainstay fighters, although approaching obsolescence and beginning to be outclassed.
Ah yes the Dutch subs that sunk about a ship a day during the early stages of the war, there are quite a few interesting stories on the Dutch actions during the war, like this minehunter that disguised itself as an island to lay anchor during the day and sail at night to avoid the Japanese patrols
Yep. The HNLMS Abraham Crijnssen. To quote Wikipedia, "To escape detection by Japanese aircraft (which the minesweeper did not have the armament to defend effectively against), the ship was heavily camouflaged with jungle foliage, giving the impression of a small island. Personnel cut down trees and branches from nearby islands, and arranged the cuttings to form a jungle canopy covering as much of the ship as possible. Any hull still exposed was painted to resemble rocks and cliffs. To further the illusion, the ship would remain close to shore, anchored and immobile during daylight, and only sail at night"

Those Stringbags did the bizzo on that Tone Class heavy cruiser! It's amazing that an aircraft that couldn't fly much faster than the ton actually got out of that fight alive.
Wolfy, you may want to experiment with your plane formations for high or low bombing. By using the vic formation,I`ve found that generally only the lead plane may hit,but I`ve had better success with a box formation. But still use vic or even line abreast for torpedoes.
Yeah, bad formation choices and altitude too. Pretty sure a few of the bombs failed to arm. On a note of realism - dropping 1000 lb AP bombs from 50 feet would blow up the bomber. I find Line Ahead with max separation is best for level bombing, Vic for gun and rocket strafing, and Line Ahead with low separation for torpedo strikes.
@@Imperialcadets I establish those formations on an attack heading and then trigger individual attacks. Means they keep the general formation but target individually.
I don't think you need worry about anything making this particular mod too easy, so a few Dutch subs would be cool. They were after all some of the first allied naval assets to take the fight to the Japanese. Doesn't look like Singapore's substantial naval defences are modelled in this game. Singapore had a LOT of heavy naval artillery (including 15 inch guns). There's a good reason the Japanese took the gamble of a gruelling land attack through the jungle! Limitation of the underlying game?
In reality though, Singapore was not the "fortress" Churchill imagined it to be. Several british officers pointed out to him that it was completely unsuitable for this role as it was very vulnerable from land attacks and the naval base was at the northern coast of the island, right in the way of a land attack. The Malaya campaign was a desaster for the British.
I remember watching your first U-boat gameplay and loved your knowledge and dedication to history. I'm proud to have seen your channel grow and to have been there since you were tiny channel. If you ever decide to play war thunder I'll be more than happy to show you the way of the German Panzer. The game has Aircraft, Tanks, Self Propelled Artillery and plenty of Naval vessels to choose from. I strongly recommend it, it's a fun game that wants that realistic vehicle shooter. Keep up the great work can't wait for your next U-boat gameplay vid because those are my favorite
I loved Atlantic Fleet, and let me tell you, the nostalgia I got from hearing the AAA sound (Which has not changed since their first game) was amazing. Killer fish is such a great studio, and I can’t wait for them and their former-employees’ studios to make more awesome games. Video was also great, and learning about the Dutch Indies Campaign and the mechanics of the game was great! Hope you and killer fish keep up the good work, -J
I really love ur videos and ur voice makes for great narration. U have good voice even for move or radio. Ur commentary really brings the enjoyment for the game 👍thank u for all the time and energy u put into making the war on the sea videos. I watched all ur older war on the sea series also .Great videos as always.
Seaman Farris Lee onboard USS Houston (CA-30) February 2nd 1942 While we have not seen any combat, we have recieved news on several attacks on Japanese ships in the area, it appears that we have managed to hit atleast 2 capital ships and 1 is confirmed to be sunk, while I do not know the specifics, this could be payback for all the loss the Japanese have caused us however small.
I've been jonesing for this all week. I _think_ that sub was an "I" or "RO" class. I'm not certain. @1030... wrong class of Destroyer. Note the small funnel behind the bridge, and the larger one amidship. @1500 those older fighters with fixed landing gear are easy prey! When you see them, attack! They don't have a chance! Great episode! Eager for the next one.
Michael T Mcghin on the uss walker dd163 1942 I have been on walker to 2 days now and the war is not going well for us Japanese have attacked Singapore with little to no damage to them as far as I know. but as part of task force A I am certain Walker will play her part in the upcoming battle and I have seen fleets of aircraft taking off to challenge Japanese Navy
Not Zeroes - thankfully. Ni 31's well armed but flimsy. Buffaloes do have a chance against them. But it means there's a Japanese Aircraft carrier in the area.
Strafing: (1) Formation "Line Ahead" (2) Spacing about 100' apart (3) Speed JUST before they push over (Not individual attacks) PULL the Speed back to about 50%. (4) If individually attacking you will have to pull speed back on each plane. Note planes will speed up after attack. You lose plane strafing fast - try this once - more time on target - more bullets into target - more bullets into target more damage. I've sunk DD with 2 passes with 4 planes.
You should try to take manual control of one bomber in each 'wave' you send out. It's extremely fun to bomb manually at low-level; you get a good feel for it quickly, and it's effective as hell.
Hey Wolf! Try strafing on a broadside instead, just in case the angles of attack are modelled. If your machine guns fire at the bow/stern of any ship, most bullets will just probably bounce right off
Great content really been enjoying your channel. Keep it up man. Been excited for this series. Liked your surface ship Cold Waters episodes. Ready for the big guns!
Those are not Hudson but Martin B-10's the nose turret gives it away 2:40. But I love that they have the B-10 modeled into this game as the lone survivor is at the USAF Museum in Dayton Ohio. And if you are thinking Dutch subs may I suggest the O=19 as she was lent aid by the USS Cod on July 9 and 10th 1945, the first and only time a attack sub lent aid to a fellow attack sub from another nation in history. But O-19 was destroyed by a torpedo when the Cod was unable to pull her off the reef and returned the Dutch crew to Subic Bay naval base.
"These guys?" Hmmm, I don't recall ever reading about that model of combat aircraft...as in "these guys" will do a strafing run." Are they perhaps made by the "somebody" aircraft company?
I always have my bombers go in line formation that way all planes in the formation fly over the target. Torpedo bombers I use the Vic or abreast formation to increase the chance of hitting
I think the bombs dropped in front of the dd because you misidentified the dd as a Hatsaharu class as the pictured outline showed only 2 torp launchers whereas the model you attacked had 3 torp launchers so rngesus punished you with a derpy miss.
shame the game does not simulate coast defences, because the 5 x 15-inch guns as well as the 3 x 9.2 and 10 x 6-inch guns were there to make any action such as that damn near suicidal :D
Losses like that definitely would have made the Japanese slow their advance. They might have even given the Dutch some breathing room in the East Indies.
