Something tells me this is propaganda. First of all, im Persian and i 1985 the war wasn't really intense. And my uncle joined the war in late 1987 and he was alright.

People please remember Iran just had a revolution a year before this 8 year war. Iran was just getting back on its feet. But Saddam tried to take advantage of Iran's situation. Saddam invaded Iran with out any formal warning. Iran was hardly prepared. But the courageous men of Iran volunteered to fight and protect Iran and Shia' Islam. Iran regained ALL of its land lost to Iraq by 1982. Iranian troops marched into Iraq and nearly reached Basra but the U.S butted in and helped Iraq.

People in Iran are very patriotic and religious and will fight to protect Iran from an invasion. I forgot to mention nearly the whole world supported Saddam's Iraq against Iran. France,Britain,Brazil, Israel,U.S, Arab World all supported Iraq by funding them with money,food military equipment and weapons. It was basically the whole world against Iran. In the end Iran won. Saddam wanted to invade Iran and take it's oil. But he failed. The Iranian people fought and pushed Iraq back.

Iran won this war!They were in a weak position because of the Iranain Revolution and had just turned into a Islamic Republic, Saddam Hussein tried to take advantage of us(Iran is a oil rich country). But he underestimated Iran and Iran fought back and regained all its land it had lost by 1982! Iran then adavanced into Iraq and nearly reached Basra,but then the WEST realised Iran was winning the war,so they funded Iraq with MILLITARY AID because they didnt want another Islamic Republic

I’m not a fan of the Islamic republic by any means nor of islam as I prefer secularism when it comes to government but I gotta respect the independence that it brought to Iran for the first time in a while and more so I respect these brave men for sacrificing them for the vatan even if it was for a make believe heaven it helped defend the heaven in real life, long live great Persia
The reason that Iranians were so willing to go fight was because they believed they were protecting both their country and their Shia Islam,which Saddam was infamous for hating,so they saw no reason not to fight
And regardless of what people's political affiliations were, they were all muslims, whether religious or not. There were christian armenians etc, but listen to the songs almost all the war songs are about God, Karbala, Imam Hussein etc. Religion gets people through tough times, and there are no tougher times than war. And many didnt even want to come back, they wanted to die as martyrs at the front, again an indication of a religious motivation.
Imam Khomeini did hold a referendum and won. He then allowed free elections, which is clear by the fact he let Bani Sadr run and win even though he made it clear he did not like him. Bani Sadr then proceeded to try to run the war effort himself and flopped so was removed. Can you imagine obama or gordon brown actually trying to command the army themselves and tell the troops where to go? They would get laughed out of town.

@flyer7799 I never said that the USA supported both sides equally. I just wanted to remind you that Iran accepted US aid, just like Iraq did. Iran would have accepted more aid, if more aid was offered. I never understood why the USA would support both sides... But they did.
