I remember when the Jumbo was 4.7. It was damn near overpowered at that BR. It was so good that it was the first Premium I ever bought and used it to grind out basically the whole US tech tree.
near overpowered? Rly? It was fckn broken epitome of idiocy and every single battle with us in it was against hordes of jumbos. Entire 3.7-4.7 BR range was nonexistent due to that freaking spam
The 76 Sherman’s might be good in the hands of people who have played for years, but in the hands of people who have just unlocked them, and aren’t as great players, they are horrible. Having to snipe weak points in a tank that is one shot by enemy vehicles is not a good learning ground. It makes the grind unbearable.
True, In which oxy replies, the more you use it, the more you would understand how to play the thing, the potential is there, just have to reach that point
I agree. I didnt enjoy the 76mm until the jumbo version. You're up against tanks with serious advantages and the 76mm, whilst it does everything well, is usually at a disadvantage. Panthers will snipe you because mobility isnt good enough to avoid the guns and russian tanks outbrawl you, so you're kind of stuck in the middle trying to find a spot you can hide in whilst shooting out.
Honestly, as someone who unlocked and used these tanks as a new player, I gotta disagree with this. Having gone through the 75 Shermans just to reach the 76s provided ample time to get used to the tank and by the time I reached them it felt like a natural progression of the skills I already developed. additionally, the tanks versatility and ability to adapt to almost any role makes them more forgiving in my experience.
As someone thats grinded through germany, america, russua, britain, france, and sweden in that order. 95% without premium. I despise the 76 shermans. theres other tanks at the same BR that can do anything a sherman can do, better.
It is important to mention that since gaijin reduced the horsepower on all the 76mm gun shermans (except for the jumbo) aswell as the M18 *for no historical reason* the Panther can now outrun and outexcelerate all the 76mm gun shermans. In case you are curious: M4A1(76) and M18 went from 460 Horsepower to 400 Horsepower All M4A2s went from 420 to 410 Horsepower. M4A3(76) and italian M36B1 went from 500 horsepower to 450 horsepower. It is especialy obvious that these changes have no basis in reality because of the complete lack of consistency as the M4A3E2 and M36 still have 500 horsepower even though they have the exact same engine and transmission as the M4A3(76). Not only that but they were deployed before the M4A3(76). Gaijin made this change a couple of updates ago and didnt mention it in any of their changelogs. The entire war thunder community should have been outraged about this but since gaijin made this change in silence most players didnt even notice it. Even the U.S. players. If we allow gaijin to make random biased ahistorical changes to the U.S. tanks it means that they can make the same ahistorical biased changes to all tanks in the game. If it happens to your favorit vehicle dont say I didnt warn you.
33:20 "I personally struggle to land shots... Getting the lead down can be quite a challenge." Proceeds to eviscerate a Me-410 with a single clip of HE.
One thing worth noting that wasn't mentioned- the (W) suffix on the 76mm Shermans refers to the fact that they have wet ammo stowage. Most of the time this won't really do much for you, since a lot of stuff at their tier will oneshot if it pens anyway, but it does remove stowage from easy to hit spots like beside the driver or in the center and sides of the hull, and also reduces the risk that your ammo will cook off quickly due to a fire.
I got my Calliope from a 75% coupon myself. Around when I was first grinding the tech tree, at that. I brought that thing all the way up the BR range with me. Managed to kill an IS7 with the rockets when that thing first came out. Probably my proudest War Thunder moment.
My friend's crowning achievement in the Calliope is lobbing rockets across Berlin and killing an 88 Flak Bus the by hitting a T-34-57. He always tries to lob rockets spawn to spawn now. He rarely gets kills, but he almost always splashes some people or knocks out a track.
That T20 moment made me even sadder. I bought it a few months ago while grinding America and it became my favorite tank in the US tech tree. It was perfectly balanced at 5.7, as your armor was shit, gun mediocre, but very good mobility. This plus the M4A3E8 and M18 was so much fun to play with. They should've kept the T20 at 5.7 and just put the Easy 8 at 5.3 because there should be no way an Easy 8 fights Tiger II Hs. But, no I guess the T20 is equal to the fuckin' Jagdpanther and it facing *M48A2Cs* is ""balanced"". Still happy I bought it, remains one of my favorites although if I wanna play America, I now play the M4A2 and M24. Side note: The M4A2/M24 combo was probably the best event combo ever until Gaijin moved all the M24s to Rank II because reasons. Still a good SL grinder duo.
What's even more sad about T20 that in uptiers you might face IS-3 against which you have no way of killing it in typical encounters. As far as I know only shot straight from the side, between the the track wheels from like 200m or less away is the only way with 76mm gun. Otherwise you have to resort on trying to break the gun barrel or tracks and hope your teammates can finish it off.

One tactic with corner peaking with the m6a1 with dual cannon.. if "dueling" a tank around a corner or whatever.. you can use the small cannon to make the enemy think you missed and then could make his move on your reload but.. you still have your 76mm ready and loaded. They wont take the bait all the time but sometimes it works
OMG! Finally the American Rank III. Love the video! Just feel like you should do the big trees before the Italians and the R3s they have. I'm almost Rank IV now. Trying to hold back my progress until your video. Love the effort though! Keep it up!
I've played WT for 3 years and am just now getting into tank, and surprisingly hooked. Your videos have been invaluable to a newb such as myself. Thank you for these!
Mouse and keyboard ;). I have heard of people using joysticks, but not really necessary. I haven't tried on controller, but I hear it's tough compared.
Good stuff. I think that the USA rank 3 stuff isn't terrible but it was very frustrating to play as a new player. Because the 75 & 76's don't have stupendous amounts of penetration, you really have to know the weak spots on all sorts of tanks. And long range engagements with those guns can be pretty awful.
YES!, I don't care if its long, I will watch this over and over because I need it so much since its so helpful, also nice I'm also researching rank 3 of US, thank you bro Oxy

FYI in regards to the A-26B-10: the twin 37mm cannons got quite a large buff to their penetration and velocity. Making them more viable in ground attack and air combat
PERSONALLY, I love playing my jumbo and it’s premium clone the cobra king. They make for great brawling tanks on maps like advance to the rhine, Berlin and even Stalingrad if set up right. The only issues I have with them is long range maps like maginot, firearce and Kursk where it’s easy to get sniped long range by 88’s, so in my experience and play style of the tanks I definitely prefer close quarters and facehugger maps that let me utilize the troll hull armor and turret
I know you only included rank 3 aicraft but in addition the F4U-4 is an excellent cas plane for this br range. Carries a pretty decent loadout, uses late war. 50 cals and is a really capable fighter ones you get rid of your ordinance.
losing my marbles waiting for the next part, already have top tier US but listening to your take on these vehicles is basically the highest quality content regarding the game on youtube
You create my favorite War Thunder videos on RU-vid! Thank you for your hard work. Your British accent is also greatly appreciated by this American. :)
me personally am a little excited to see the next vid and im hyped for the long teir 4 grind lol. regardless ive already grinded out us and i like seeing videos of them, theres always nuances in the our (american) tanks which to me makes them interesting. hope your feeling better soon oxy
Oxy: Talking about how good the tank is and showing footage of him absolutely destroying the enemy team Me: constantly dying over and over in a damn Jumbo…..
Such a great video series! I chose USA for my first nation, so definitely getting value from your videos. I've just gotten to rank IV; do you know when you will have a video out for that?
Personally I think you have one of the best voices for narration, your videos are interesting enough and you provide the vital information in a very good formatted manner, Its something that you will use over and over again.
when i first got the 76 sherman i was so discouraged to keep playing because i had no idea how to use it's most powerful weapon. That weapon being it's versatility, now that ik about it i've been getting so many kills and it's super fun to play
Bruh Versatile is good IRL, but in game it just means you suck at everything and when you attempt to do something, someone will do it better and kill you.
This inspired me to play the 75 Jumbo again and it's very cathartic. High-top tier may be the best tier for me, but there's just something about fighting multiple enemies in low tier up close and personal and actually winning those engagements instead of getting slapped by players making use of the breech meta.
I've always loved the M4A2/Jumbo combo. Any time 6.0-6.7 gets rough for me, I go back to my happy place lol. I'm so glad you discussed the differences in how different the play styles really are in the Shermans and how the M18 isn't as forgiving as people think. 😂
In reality, the MG port on the Jumbo is not a weak spot. Sure, it is thin. But actually going through? It's a matter of RNG heavily favoring the Jumbo.
this is so true, I have had many situations where I Have out played a Jumbo, shot them in the MG port and either the shot only hurts the MG gunner, or the shot gets deleted by the MG itself
Surprised oxy didn’t mention the trick with the M6A1 where you can fake an enemy out with the smaller gun. If your in aiming at an enemy and their behind cover you can fire the smaller gun which might fool the enemy into thinking you fired your main gun and missed. If they think you fired the 76 they’ll pullout of cover thinking your reloading and thats when you when you get them.
I know those vehicles like the bottom of my pockets and yet I'll still gladly watch your vids, keep up the great work Oxy. You're one of my favs out here :)
good job mate !👌 i can definitely see you spend a lot of time and effort into your content. definitely seeing you taking off soon! keep up the good work 👍🏻👍🏻
Oxy your best brody keep up the awesome videos. I was looking forward to this one so much because this is where I'm at right now as a relatively new player.
Fun fact: you can kill a tiger 2 h with an m19, there’s a little spot at the back of the turret where it meets the hull, kind of like the back of the neck of the tank, fire there for a little while while the tiger is tracked and you might get an angry message after!
About M4A2 - It has 4.0 br. Matchmaker can put in -1 or +1 br. 5.0 br - rare, few tanks, weak, suffers from 5.3-5.7- and (rare) 6.0 means no one play that - no uptiers higher than with the 3.7 sherman. 2.7 br - rare, suffers from constant uptiers to 3.7. Legit setups in trees of USA, Italy, France, Sweden. Not very popular. It means that with 4.0 br you will get into the same battles as with 3.7 so it is 100% worth it. You can check my logic yourself person who is reading this. Br system with decimals is cursed. Use it for your advantage.
There actually was a time, about two years ago, that I came face to face with a KT(H) in my Hellkitty on Vietnam. I fired, and did nothing- he fired, and knocked my track out. So, I loaded my APCR, hit him through the mantlet, and took his ammo out! It was a happy day.
when people compare the sherman 76 they also seem to forget about the short stabilizer that basically always gives you the first shot aslong as the enemy isn't waiting for you
Ok so you have to be moving slower than 25kph against (50% of the time is a tiger or Panther) that if angled you have to really aim...and they just...aim at you and shoot. you have to actively fuck up in a Tiger to die against the 76's.
@@maybach5787 Sure, any tank can be good if your enemies mess up massively, but the short stabiliser and gun of the 76 shermans lets you punish slight mistakes, which are far more common. It also lets you shoot while moving out of cover, rather than having to move out of cover, stop, shoot, then drive back in.
@@edwardking9359 That may be right, But that requires whoever is around to not already be standing still and pre-aimed.. the Gun albeit is great against Tiger 1s and good against Panthers (for me it sometimes is eaten by those damn MGs), it struggles against the Tiger P unless you get a really good shot (WHILE THEY ARE FACING YOU) and just... ineffective against the Tiger H, let alone the IS' which I have yet to kill since nomatter where I am at the weakspots, it just doesn't pen... russian bias I guess.
The Shermans, moreso than just about any tank, will teach you to be better at war thunder. Also, their 50cals, in addition to all their other positives, make them even more versatile than anything they face. M4a2 75mm is my number 1 tank in war thunder, but I love them all.
Btw your voice wasn't Scruffy at all and the video was AWESOME. The production quality is otherworldly and the scripting is really well made. Again, Superb video and thank you for putting so much effort into this😃
I STILL do not get why they reclassified the M18 GMC as a light tank from a tank destroyer. If they wanted it to have scouting, they could have just given it scouting; both of the ASU’s have scouting but are classed as tank destroyers, so it wouldn’t have even been breaking their own rules since that “rule” had already been broken.
For the part with the Jumbo sherman, a sort of hidden pro to it is that many tiger and panther players don't seem to know how to tell a regular m4a1 and jumbo apart, and just try to center mass or even shoot at the turret just to harmlessly ricochet off or just be plain absorbed. This gives you ample time to get two shots in before either one could reload their next shot, which is enough to kill them. A perfect example is a game I had where I managed to solo four tigers at the same time on Poland (In the town section just below A). Two came around a corner, shot one in the side, other swung around and shot my turret doing absolutely nothing, APHE to the cupola, apcr to the co/driver. Two more just hit the road into the town and start firing, bouncing off, meanwhile I just hit a cupola shot on both of them until they died. Neither one tried to move behind cover when the only crew I hit on both first shots were the gunner/commander, like they just figured that a 75mm sherman couldn't possibly pen them from the front. I'm sure it's a mix of german players rushing tigers and assuming they're Rommel, then to just to get stomped on by a "lowly Sherman". Panthers, aside from the A type, are honestly the only ones I try to avoid frontally, mantle shots can be a pain in the rare case where they know to slightly angle the turret. The Panther A, like the sherman, has a giant gunner port that for some reason I never see bushed at all (not complaining though).
When you're describing parts of the tank like the mantlet, turret cheeks or front plate ect. You should show what part of the tank that is like maybe show the X-ray view of the armor so what part your talking about is highlighted I know I was confused when I first started learning this stuff for longer than I would care to admit 😅
My favorite part about the jumbo is its ammo cap and placement. It's not a joke to be able to say that you can reliably carry all 100+ rounds., my standard loadout is 20 smoke, 20 APCR, 54 APHE, and 10 HE. It's completely okay to do this purely because of where the ammo is stored, below the turret. If you get hit and ammo racked, you were going to die regardless, because someone can see your side where the turret is. And with it's good reload rate of roughly 5 seconds, you can keep blasting at panthers and tigers easily. It's stupidly fun, especially urban maps. Just avoid any large maps like Kursk.
Guide to killing kitty cats: Tiger I: Slap the cupola. Repeat until dead. Or just hit the hull. Panther: APCR is a good friend in the 75mm. Slap the turret cheek and repeatedly turn the gunner into a fine pink mist. Tiger II: Cry? (Or just slap the turret cheek on a P, beg for the British to save you on a H).
I think the 76s Shermans are so the definition of potential energy, but for someone to be able to do so must be someone who puts insane hours into the game and is experienced. So if you are looking for a good time and will not spend a monstrous amount of hours learning, just play another nation
0:32 I don't wanna be that guy but you said the M4A2 was the last regular 76mm on the tech tree when what you meant was that the M4A2 was the last regular 75mm. But still the video is good and because im on this rank it really helps going forward on the tech. Keep it up.
I have been rolling around in my Sherman’s for a while now getting kind of beat up, decided to try out the T-14 after watching this and now I’m beating everyone else up, this thing can take a hit, or 10
