Sadly no the Sheridan is not amphibious, at least in the gear it has in game. It could be amphibious with a similar system to the Duplex Drive Shermans

History facts about the M551 Sheridan: The Sheridan was origianly amphibious early on, but it took a bunch of setup (Setting up a float screen plus splash shields). Later ones, particularly the M551A1 were too heavy to float because they added a lot of additional gear, like the armored gun shield for the Caliber .50 Machine Gun. It's a bit similar in what happened with the Soviet BMP and the American M2 Bradley where early ones floated but later ones got too heavy to be amphibious.

I actually saw this tank in real life in someone’s back yard, not a museum

I got a good chuckle out of the commentary using this M551 Sheridan. Early 70s, Cold War, Communist Border, I was a Sheridan crewman capable in every position Loader, Driver, Gunner, TC. I never had enough Balls or the opportunity to 'swim' a Sheridan, however we were told it was doable. First the crew had to stop at the waters edge. Open up the heavy soft coverers on the top edges of the sides and rear and raise the canvas with vertical tubular supports. The front armored slope had a false wooden hinged front with a plexiglass window for the driver that tipped forward and locked into place providing a bow. Once converted to swim the Sheridan looked like a big box with maybe the cupola mounted 50 being the only visible gun. While in Fort Knox at AIT Training we trained with the predecessor to the Sheridan, the 114 Scout vehicle, a mogas burning twin Chevy V=8 powered armored vehicle. Similar to the 113 APC and smaller. I actually did swim one of these. I heard occasionally one would sink during training sometimes drowning some of the crew members. Back to the Sheridan. It was designed as the launch platform for the Shillelagh Missile. However these low coil missiles were very expensive so 'conventional ammo' was the most fired main gun ammo. Imagine a 5" gun, the largest ever put on an American tank, put on arguable the lightest tank Americans ever built. Shoot a flank shot and one track would raise up off the ground from the recoil. A forward shot raised the front of the tank so high it would be on the last two road wheels and drive sprocket. The Gunners Command "on the way" was always followed by a two-second pause before pulling the trigger to allow all crew members to grab their 'cheater bars' welded to the turret to avoid being thrown by recoil. The driver held on to the T-bar steering. It would be fun if the programmers for this video tweaked it to show a track lifting off the ground or the front raising off the ground when the main gun fires anything but a missile. The recoil was so great, one time during gunnery my Sheridans bell housing broke allowing the transmission to separate from the engine by about 1 1/2" stretching the throttle linkage and the Sheridan took off at full speed. The only way to stop it was to pull the diesel cut-off cable shutting down the engine. It was a very exciting ride before the driver figured that out !

Haha, I too learned the hard way the Sheridan was not amphibious. I looked it up and learned that it was amphibious, but only when it's floating skirts are deployed

It looks like the 8 forward facing grenade launchers, 4 on each side are represented. These normally held White Phosphorus grenades used to cover your own Sheridan with 'Willie Peter' to burn off any enemies trying to pour gasoline on the engine or attempting to pry open the locked hatches. I heard these grenades were very effective protection in jungle warfare when 'Dinks' jumped from the trees to the top of the tank.

Back in it's day the Sheridan was the 'sports car" of armor. 8 gears forward, 4 reverse, turbocharged Detroit Diesel powered. Design was top speed of 45 mph but with the governor tweaked we got close to 70 mph on a smooth surface ........ say the autobahn. One time we passed a German driving in his car, I suppose it was the noise, maybe the tank, that scared him so bad he swerved right off the highway without slowing. Oh yeah, the Sheridan were air droppable too but I don't see anyone in the video driving off cliffs ..... just diving into rivers :-) !!!

Put a skirt in the front and it could swim. We used to do it all the time. M551 was Air droppable also C-130 low altitude parachute extraction system (LAPES ) it was our tank support in the 82nd Airborne division. Big gun and a MGM-51 Shillelagh missile system.

the Sheridan IS amphibious so retro/Ham had good intel...HOWEVER it needs a short prep made up of raising a metal flap on the front that's a wave break, attachment of a metal ring a cloth flotation screen that's 3 feet tall held taunt by metal poles similar to a shower curtain. propulsion was achieved with screws attached to the back or track attachments installed once floating. overall its purpose was to land on a beach with the supply ships, and cross a river without needing a barge to carry it... not for contested landings.

Horribly sad that they don't have a "amphibious with preparation" feature, would really straighten things out between amphibious with trim vane (most soviet amph stuff) vs amphibious with prep (most Nato stuff)

It's Lemmings, but with tanks!!

Why take the missle and heat? It's very fun to use the HE shell and overpressure everything when you shoot their roofs. And just 2 of heat and missle to backup in case something goes wrong.

It's amphibious, but you've got to put the flotation screen up. Put the screen up next time, fellas.
