Magee Marsh and Crane Creek State Park are great places to learn to photograph Warblers the easier way with your OM Systems OM-1 or OM-1 Mark 2 (OM-1Mkii) and a zoom like the M.Zuiko 100-400IS. Here is what I have learned over the years. (Applies with adaptation to any modern Mirrorless camera with subject detection and a long lens.)

Stephen, Thank you for sharing your experience at Magee Marsh with the OM 1 MII and the 100-400mm IS. I have moved from a Canon R5 to the OM 1 MII and chose to start with the 300mm f4. I shoot mainly birds and am thinking about the 100-400 IS that you used in your video. I’m looking for a zoom to help my old eyes and reflexes to help track birds, especially warblers and birds in flight. After watching this and other videos of yours, I think I’ll get the M. Zuiko 100-400 IS zoom. I find I am enjoying using the OM 1 MII with the 300mm f4 a lot more than I did using the Canon R5 with the RF100-500mm.

Hi Stephen: I was interested in your point that the AF target area can be delinked from the AF point when shooting a bird with a single AF point through a heavily branched and/or leafy area while using bird detection AI. Specifically, I would like to acquire focus with the single AF point but then not limit the bird detection AI tracking to just the AF single point but rather expand the bird detection AI tracking to the entire sensor area. What are the settings with the OM1 Mark II which provide for that advantageous focusing mode? Thank you. PJI

Menu 2.AF, Subject C-AF Setting (subject is the little cube), set still camera (camera icon) to ALL. Then just set your focus target area to small. You have to half press the shutter release or use the AF-ON button to establish focus and allow subject detection and eye tracking to lock on…then the camera will follow focus wherever the eye goes in the frame, as long as you do not release focus. :)

Great video and wonderful photos. However, I think you are missing out on a powerful feature: a very high frame rate. With enough light, I will shoot at 50fps. In lowlight I will have to shoot at 20fps, but never lower. The chances of getting the perfect pose, perfect focus, and perfect light increase dramatically at high frame rates.

I have mixed feelings about high frame rates. 1) I am lazy and do not want to sort through more frames than I have to. 2) Continuous focus might struggle to keep up at high frame rates with moving birds in brush, 3) I have never felt like the perfect fame was between two that I capture at 5fps. But that is just me.
