I’m so happy to have found this channel. One of the worst things about go going back to work after COVID was to have to figure out what to wear. I will sometime change outfit half a dozen times before settling on one. I am just starting my journey but look forward to viewing all your videos and starting to work on my capsule wardrobe! Thank you all that you do!!
I’m in the same boat, just turned 40 and having a change in job but also still a mum of young kids. I’ve learned some great, easy to implement tips dressing for my inverted triangle shape. Thank you MM.
I'm 27 from America and I absolutely adore your style! I have slowly remodeled my wardrobe to reflect all your styling tips and tricks and have watched your videos loads! Thank you so much Melissa... i look and feel so confident in my own skin now, My husband is loving my new clothes and I feel so great! Please continue making content for us girlies out there! Dani
Love your advise on lifestyle dressing. My nemesis since I retired as I love career wear, but basically walk the dog and run errands in real life. I am working towards having a nice basic wardrobe that fits my lifestyle but still makes me feel pulled together. Love your advice! Love also that you include a lot of outerwear. Many bloggers concentrate only on inside clothing, when so many of us spend more time in outerwear. Do you have hats?
So true! I do wear hats and i filmed a segment on hats and scarves and when I came to look at the footage it wasn't there so i'm assuming that I just didn't press record!!! Sorry; I brought myself a camera and i'm still getting to grips with filming on it!!
Love it! Thank you Melissa. My New Year resolution will be to follow your advice! I would start now but sadly I’ve already purchased too many ‘wrong’ clothes for this season.
Melissa, I just found you about 3 weeks ago and have watched a lot of your videos, I love every single one so far 😍 I'm quite a bit older and quite a bit bigger than you but you are so amazing at what you do that I can easily apply your style tips and advice to styling my outfits. Can't thank you enough ❤️
I always enjoy the colors and styles of fall clothing. Now that I live in frigid Minnesota, I need more wool and cashmere cardigans and blazers. That's good luck as it suits my apple body shape--as you point out in your series! I like to wear chunky/organic long necklaces and that fits in with your advice as well! I never threw out my little shoulder pads from the 90's and they are coming in handy, too.
Love your videos. You are such a help and your advice is so practical and useful in the real world. Thank you for all the great demonstrations and clothing descriptions. You make it fun to learn and achievable ❤️
I'm so glad I came across your channel. I've been looking for a petite British stylist with a classic style and have struggled! So I'm glad I found you! I have a few questions: 1) is there any reason why you don't shop in the petite ranges? 2) do you shorten the trousers yourself or get a tailor to do it? 3) do you find that you need to alter the blazers from Zara too? (I'm 5ft 1 so I struggle to find blazers that fit)
Hi there. Sorry for the delay in coming back to you. I['m 5ft 3.5 and i NEVER shop in the petite range. Mainly because I like my trousers either really long (so they make me look taller) or, i like ankle grazers and I can get both in the normal range. It means I do sometimes have to take my trousers up so I use wonder-web (you just iron it on) but for a more tailored pair of trousers I would use a seamstress. Most of Zara's blazers fit me well. The arms are sometimes a little long but I roll them up anyway. I hope that helps and thank you for watching x
I'm losing my lockdown weight and need to smarten up from the joggers and t-shirts. Thank you Melissa for the guidance. You look beautiful in the taupes, creams and camels, me, not so much. Is it possible to build greys, blues and white?
Excellent video. I have slipped in my style and I still fail in creating a basic wardrobe. You have helped me tremendously through this presentation. Thank you!
Very, very useful. I was particularly interested in the topic of shoes - myself having them in so many colours I indeed struggle to find a good match of shoes that wouldn't ruin my outfit or make me look frumpy. I would very much appreciate more content on matching shoes to an outfit. What if most of my shoes are in black? What if I do not wear beige/taupe/camel/tan at all since this completely isn't my colour? is it better to have bottom and shoes the same colour or contrasting? Or shoes always neutral? help please!
Hi Ewa. A lot depends on your lifestyle, your skin colour, your height etc., there's not s blanket answer without knowing more detail. I do 1;1 styling if that helps x
Picking up some great tips Melissa..I appreciated the comment about comfort over tight jeans..Got there a while ago..Must have a look at the jogging pants you refer to..Look great dressed up and down..x
Just subscribed! Thank you Melissa for the wonderful tips. I love a classic, natural and elevated look and you inspire me in that. Where would I find that grey coat? I couldn`t find it on the cos website, I just looked in France as I live there, so maybe they're sold out. Anyway have a lovely new year! I'm looking forward to more videos from you xx
Happy New Year Melissa! Loved the video, lots of really helpful tips and I refer to your advice when buying new items now. Structure, colour and weight of fabric are my guides. Thank you again ❤️
Happy New Year Melissa! Loved this video to kick off the year with. My capsule wardrobe is getting there….. I could really relate to your comment about having some nice winter coats. I’m on the hunt for a camel coat so will check out your ideas. I love the navy one too! Can’t wait for your next video. Oh and please do a summer one of these as well. (In a few months obvs!) 🧥👍☺️💕
I will do Beverley and thank you as always for watching x Ps - the latellier coat is a really good price and very nice. I was wearing a size small but I probably would go up a size in it as it was a little snug!
Great video, lots of tips! Thank you. I just want to say that ‘age appropriate’ is something that really needs a to be kicked to the curb? Times are changing …. Style is more about the person and what suits them as an individual. Dress to feel beautiful and powerful. 🤍
I looked on the website at the v-neck silk top and the largest US is a size 12. I’m a plus size, apple shape and I would need a larger size. Oh they’re so pretty. I just received my first silk pillowcase in the mail today. It’s so pretty. I love your channel and I learn so much from you. You are sweet too!
This is all very good information. But living in Canada with our long, harsh winters has me wearing colour in my outer wear. I have a red puffer, a bright blue down coat, and a brown cashmere wool long dress coat ( which is very old). I did however buy cream and grey scarves and hats to go with everything, thanks to you!
WOW. 👏🏻😊Thank you finally a real woman explaining how to wear lovely outfits in the real world. 😍love this clear explanation of how to build and starting to build my capsule. Love the nutural colours but struggling with my grey hair (natural) and how they work on me without making me look washed. Look forward to your next video and spring:summer capsule wordrobe.
You are so welcome! You could always add in an accent colour like bright pink or burgandy (for example) which would just lift the neutral colours and make your lovely hair a feature. Have you watched episode 4 of the body shape master class series? In that video I use a bright orange/red coat and you'll see how it looks lovely with all of the neutrals. Heres the link for it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nbI49Tls39k.html I hope that helps x
Hi there, I’m loving your videos, thank you for sharing these tips. I was wondering if you had a link for the HandM shacket you featured in this video please? I’ve been looking for it everywhere!! Thank you 😊
I’m afraid that video is over a year old so none of the links and clothes will now be available. If you click on my logo then the ‘video’ tab you’ll see all of my videos in date order. Start with the most current ones and you’ve got a better chance of the items still being available x
@@mmpersonalstyling Thanks so much for your reply. Such a bummer as this is a colour wave I've been looking for for ages! They have it still but only in a XXL. Super cheeky question but I don't suppose you know anywhere else selling something similar? I've been loving your videos. I have loads of lovely clothes but none of them seem to go together 🤦🏼♀ I've just purchase the Lilysilk hoodie which I think will be a good basic addition. Thanks very much for the inspiration.
Can you give basics and capsule choices for silver hair? While I love seeing all the gold and beige tones they really do nothing for me at all! Thank you
OMG! You actually made this make sense lol. I need to take my time and focus on different styles and fabrics in the same color and that will help me see what I have better before moving on to so many other colors. Thank you 🙏🏾 ❤️
Really helpful, Melissa. We moved three years ago and it means a much more casual lifestyle. I still don't have the right clothes for my life, but am working on it. I am usually attracted to "dressy" items, but need to balance them out more. Shoes are my downfall, as I love heels and only have "ugly trainers" for walks etc.
Dressing for your actual lifestyle rather than your fantasy lifestyle is something I see ALL the time. If you're wearing trainers a lot then really focus on buying yourself some that make you feel really good. If budget allows leave your 'ugly' trainers (in your words!) for dog walks and your nicer ones just for you for your casual lifestyle. I do online consultations if that's of any interest where i'd be more than happy to try and help you. Thank you for watching x
I love your styling. I'd love to see if you could do more plus size styling and especially for accessible styling for disabled women. I'm in a wheelchair and can't wear a lot of items like trenches.
I have a UK size 22 lady so that should tick help on the plus size things. If a model with a disability comes forward then i'm ore than happy to style them...
Happy New Year Melissa, great to see you back with more style tips. When shopping now I’m thinking about your videos and it has saved me a fortune in buying items to hang in my wardrobe…. Hopefully I’m looking more stylish too ! Ps. your skin looks amazing xx
Thank you but I’m not going to lie, I’ve invested in a proper camera (I was only using my phone before) and it has a ‘smooth skin’ setting on so I’m afraid it’s not my reality!!!! X
You are absolutely fantastic, so happy I found your fabulous channel! Learn each and every time and already looking forward to the next video. Thank you!
New to your channel and LOVING your classic yet modern, flattering style. Been binge watching your videos and hope you will be making them for a long time! Video Suggestion - accessories and jewellery - how to choose, how to style, and your recommended essentials? 🙏🏻👏😍
Hello Anna and welcome! I’m currently sitting on a beach in Corfu answering everyone’s comments and the first video I’m filming when I’m back is a ‘how to accessories video’ so that should work out well for your request! Thank you for watching!
I found your channel a week ago, watched one video, and subscribed immediately. Nobody else on RU-vid offers practical advice for women "of a certain age." I'm shaped a bit like your short strawberry - pear model: 5'2" and quite hourglass. My tastes are much different than hers, but I learned a lot. And I learn more with every video I watch. My biggest downfall is shoes. I'm a USA size 7 EEE ... I think that's a 5 UK? And I don't know how you handle widths ... a little wider than extra extra wide. These are wider shoes than most companies make, and what little I find is definitely unfashionable. [Birkenstocks or "barefoot" shoes.] Any advice would be very welcome.
I have binge watched all your videos. I used to dress nicely when I worked and then I retired and it was jeans and t shirts or staying in my pajamas. Not good for ones psyche. I have promised myself to treat myself better. So I have a question. How do you wear the fake leather pants without sweating to death. Thank you so very much for your time.
Hi Joanne. Most of them have a nice thin fleece lining so in uk that’s great as they keep you warm. Is that what’s causing you to sweat in them - the thicker lining? Mint velvet do a pair without the lining if that helps? X
I'd be interested to see how you would style people for warm climates. Where I live, it is about 29 degrees C most of the year, so we don't do much with sweaters, coats, jackets or boots.
I just found your channel and love it! You make things so simple. I don’t like to shop online. I always forget what I own to mix and match when I am out at the store. Do you have any suggestions? Would you make a list or take photos or do you shop with specifics in mind? Thank you
For the reasons your said, that's why I always shop online so I can double check before i hit the buy button that i've got something to go with it. Don't get me wrong, I physically go into the shops but I scan things on the shop app then re-look at my basket when I get home, then purchase online. Returns are far easier to do when brought online too, especially because i live over an hour from any shopping centre. Is there any reason you don't buy online?
Really insightful Melissa, thank you. I must admit I have a lot of items that were acquired over the years with no thought even of what with and how they would be worn. Which is really what causes the “I’ve got nothing to wear “ dilemma. So owning multiple items in different weights and sleeve lengths but similar colours is actually really helpful
Hello Melissa! I love your content! I am in the US and would like to try the Reiss wide leg trousers which seem ideal for working from home. Do they run TTS or big? I am usually a UK 8-10 like you and have a 37 inch hip. Would you suggest going with the UK 8 or 10 for these casual trousers? Thank you for helping us all look our best!
i wear a UK 8 in the wider leg from Reiss and a 10 in a tighter leg. The wide leg stretch quite a bit so if you're in between sizes then I would size down if i was you and if they're a little tight when they arrive, do a few lunges and see if they stretch!!! I love those trousers, they're a true staple of mine x
Bought the Mongolian cashmere hoodie from likysilk and the gold silk top also from lilysilk. Beautiful and fit well. Your sizing comments were soot on. Loving them both.
I enjoy your videos. I like your style ideas. But as a 49 year old I feel like wearing all neutrals makes me look older than my age. It looks professional. It looks clean. But if you’re not perfect with perfect wrinkle free skin and with a perfectly toned physique the all neutral look looks like Garanimal’s for the mature set. To each their own!
Neutrals are just your foundation pieces, you can add in a couple of brighter accent colours, in fact I actively encourage it, but only once the basics are in place. A wardrobe full of colour doesn’t work effectively for most people, it just leads to wardrobe frustration as they can’t put outfits together with ease. That all said, if you can make colour work for you then that’s brilliant 🤩 and please don’t let my advice sway you! Thanks for watching x
I love the cashmere hoody and after trawling the internet it is by far the best value over other similar ones, particularly with the discount. Thank you. I am between a small and medium, 10-12 How would you suggest sizing this one?
I agree. If you've got a larger bust then i'd go for the medium but if you've got an average sized bust which doesn't ordinarily pose a problem when buying things, then i'd go the small. Hope that helps x
Fabulous void as always! Really do look forward to your videos. Can you get the actual code for the Next tapered coated trousers please? As the link just takes you to a page full of trousers and I have no clue which are the ones you’re wearing lol Thank you x
Sorry Louise, that usually means they've sold out already. I've just updated the description box with a very similar pair so i hope that helps. Thank you for watching.
I live in the UK, I like to think I'm a size 14 to 16 but honestly more 18 - 20 My lifestyle is very casual, currently not working so mostly at home and meeting friends. Looking to refresh/ update my wardrobe. Love your videos on creating a capsule mix-and-match wardrobe. The main item on my list to buy is a coat for the autumn/ winter months. If you had to choose just one coat/ outerwear to buy what would you suggest. I'm on a slight budget but not afraid to invest in a good quality item that will last. I just can't justify to buy more than one
A long wool coat in a camel, beige or griege colour with epaulettes on the shoulders to give structure. You can wear them super casually with leisurewear or you can dress them up. X
What if you’re a larger strawberry shape.I’m 16/ 18 on top 18 on the bottom..5ft 5 with broad shoulders… from what you are saying neither coat ( dress coat ) would suit.. .? 😊🇬🇧
That video was filmed last year (and I’ve filmed a lot since!) so I honestly can’t remember which coats I showed. I would normally watch it again to see what you’re referring to but I’m currently on holiday and the internet isn’t too good. If you’re broad on top you want to go for a really long line in your coats and if it’s got some natural shape to it whereby it kicks out to give an a-line frame that would be great.
Hi Melissa, great video, happy new year. Some of the links go to a general page and not the actual item and some links don't work 😔. I love your style.
Oh no, are you able to tell me which ones? It might be that they’ve sold out already but I’ll look into it if you don’t mind pointing them out, thanks for letting me know.
Your videos are great. Unfortunately I have clothes of so many colors. I love your advice, but now I’ve spent all this money I hate to just throw or give them all away. I’m overwhelmed with all my clothes. How do I stop myself from buying more and more when actually I need to downsize big time.
Cut up your credit card / hide your credit card. Then, create outfits with everything you've got, photograph the outfits then charity shop anything you haven't paired together. x
Hi Melissa. I appreciate this video is old now but I love your leather skirt and I’ve been hunting for one. I need petite size 6 and I’m struggling to find one. Have you any ideas of where I can try please?
I spend hours looking at my wardrobe and don’t know what to wear. Thanks for this video. I have seen your consultations unfortunately at the moment I can’t afford it 😢 but need to organise for next year. Could you please do a video about fabrics we always talk about pieces with longitivtiy but found some brands that is not a investimento pieces used materials that makes odour and even washing it still an issue. Complex subject but at least a hint of fabric composition in cloths to avoid.
Hi Melissa, great ideas for a basic wardrobe! Is it a good option to wear the skirt color cream with dress booties instead the high boots you showed in the video? Thanks!
Only if they’re trendy ones, if they’re old fashioned style then it’ll make the skirt look really ‘Mumsy’ but if they’re a modern version, killer heels etc then yes, they’d look great!
I love the cashmere hoodie unfortunately they don’t carry it for plus size gals, would you be able to recommend an alternative for us larger gals please?
Hi Melissa, great presentation again. The match of the silk top with leather trousers is simply amazing. I've mentioned it before, leather trousers or leggings is a perfect fit for you, casual or dressy. Black & white always a winner, can't go wrong. Thanks!
Happy new year Melissa. I’m looking to add a waterproof coat to my collection, but it’s so hard to find a truly waterproof long coat that still looks good. Any ideas? Happy to pay up to £400 for the right coat.
@@mmpersonalstyling That’s so funny as I’m literally on their website now and I can see a long coat. All other recommendations I’ve seen just cover the bottom. The Janelle looks good. Thank you for your reply x
Amazing content Melissa, so useful, helpful and easy to understand. It makes so much sense! Thank you! I have to go check some boxes for items that I need for my neutral wardrobe now.
Sorry but that video is really old so the links won’t be relevant. I’ve shown several faux and leather trousers on more recent videos where the links should be still active. If you click on my logo you’ll see a tab called ‘videos’ - click on this and it will date order the videos so you can see the most recent ones. Hope that helps
Really informative. I would love a hoodie jumper like yours but in a winter white/ivory. Do you know of one? I’m not keen on the ribbed effect one on lilysilk. Thanks
The problem with lilysilk is that they only have basically 1 or 2 sizes "S, M, L". but let's be honest there's only an inch difference between each of those. So it's only for thin people, which means they only want thin people wearing their clothes. It's like makeup brands who make 15 "shades" of foundation that are all for light skin.
Hello! I'm from the USA, and new to your channel! I just love the casual pants with drawstring and stripe down the sides. What brand are those, please? Thank you!!
Everything is always linked for you so you can just click on the links and it will take you to the exact products. In that video you’ll find the links in the description box. If you can’t see them look for the ‘show more’ button or the three little dots, click on them and it will reveal the links. In the latest video the US links are pinned as the first comment. X
I’ve just checked and all of the links are in the description box HOWVER, that’s a very old video so none of the links will now be working as the clothes will have sold out. Sorry.
Oh no wonder haha. What a shame, I really liked all the bits you were showing in that video ☹ ok so I’ve just seen the dates under each video derrrr. Thanks for getting back to me so soon Melissa x@@mmpersonalstyling
That video is really old so it means the items wouldn’t be available now anyway I’m afraid. You’re better off watching the latest ones and there’s a better chance of the items still being available x
Re the capsule wardrobe, my colors are more autumnal I.e. charcoal grey, aubergine, purple, dark navy - cream tends to wash me out as does white. What would I do with my Colour swatch, would I just swap the light grey for a dark grey etc.
Hi there. Your autumnal colours won't mix and match well together without a lighter base colour to bring them together. Think of white/cream/beige as the cement that secures the bricks and nothing can be built without them. Wardrobes without a few fresh whiter pieces in often look a little dreary and aren't as versatile as it's harder to match everything together. However, you don't have to put these colours close to your face, they can be on your bottom half, they can be present in a scarf, accessories, trainers etc. Have you watched my capsule wardrobe video? If not then start by watching that and if you have any questions after that then i'll happily help you. xx
Hoodies are horrible things in my opinion as well as shirtless tops over 40 and sometimes under 40 and Never to be worn under a blazer if You do want to run the risk of ruining it with deodorant or sweat. All other outfits are OK, cachemire and silk being of course must haves. I enjoyed watching after the hoodie and shirtless top, but was tempted to quit there.
Oh wow Nadine, you might want to change your deodorant as I’ve never ruined any piece of clothing with deodorant! Thanks for your opinions, personal style is exactly that - personal - and it would be a boring life if everyone liked the same stuff!!!
Thanks you Melissa. Just found your channel and your advice is so helpful. I have just purchased a handful of pieces online AND with confidence, for the first time in my life!! I don't believe in needing a big wardrobe so knowing what sensible pieces to buy is fabulous. Thanks again 🙂
I am now addicted to you. You make total sense. And I am obsessed with your wide leg joggers …where do I find them. I have looked all over but no luck. I live in California.
Hi Lakita. Every item I wear is linked in the description box and the joggers are from Reiss which you have in America so hopefully no issues with you getting them. I hope that helps and thanks for watching x
I struggle to find pants with inseams long enough. I need a 34 inch inseam and they just aren’t available to purchase especially in joggers. It’s maddening!
Love your content - just subscribed. I'd love to buy the hoodie but have never had cashmere. The website care instructions suggest hand washing or MAYBE gentle. How do you launder your cashmere? Thanks!
They’re listed in the description (I just checked) they’re the Reiss wide leg trousers (they’re navy not black so that might be confusing you). I hope that helps x
