Running out of warehouse space is really common. Often, businesses will move to a larger warehouse or rent an additional warehouse.
But there are many ways to regain some of your warehouse capacity.
Can you suggest other ways to squeeze more in?

Great common sense advice from Rob. Recently visited a Melbourne timber warehouse and was *staggered* by the aisle widths and low racking heights, but then not surprised by all the overspill outside! At least know your options and consider cantilever racking & sideloaders for long loads!
@supplychainsecrets
@supplychainsecrets Год назад
It's not uncommon with long products. Timber, steel etc. A lot depends on pack sizes, weights/dimensions, MHE in use and so on.

Hey Rob, top-shelf videos! Thank you. Not sure if you have done a video on probably the most important aspect for people starting out in the 3PL space - how to get customers. That’d be just fantastic. Thank you in advance.

I have a MSc in supply chain from the University of Roehampton . I find your video very informative. I live in a slow moving Caribbean island and they have no need for or can't afford advance systems or technologies. I crave for an opportunity abroad so I can put what I studied into good use and learn more.

I have a question about logistics and data consumption based on lines per hour. This metric can be very biased in good and bad scenarios. Let's take for example, a warehouse that sells boxes. An order comes for 400 4 x 4 x 4in corrugate boxes. The bundle is let's say 25 per bundle. That is 16 bundles that need to be shipped out. Due to shipping constraints or weight or other factors, this order needs to be divided into 4 boxes/shipping labels. So one order line has 4 labels associated with it. This creates a big disconnect and negative reinforcement of looking at this metric solely and not factoring in quantity of shipped boxes/labels made. The added time to ship these negatively impacts the packer, knowing that metric will be held against them, and it can show a slower production even if working at faster rates. Now the other side of that, let's say we have an order for tag ties in multiple colors. 5 let's say, and 100qty each which is 4 bags. Because the size is small this fits into one box/one label. So 5 lines is filled in one box very quickly. Now skewing the metric logistic system the other way over estimating the production and shipping progress. A metric that takes into account bundle quantity/shipping qty and labels per hour with orders per hour is far more detailed to get accurate logistics to understand warehouse flow and production. Why isn't this the standard?

You raise an interesting point. That’s why we need to be careful what metrics we use as each operation is a bit different. Cartons per hour, eaches per hour, inners per hour, orders per hour, order lines per hour, picks per hour, hits per hour. There are so many. We need to pick the ones most meaningful to our operation.

Hey Rob, You channel & depth of supply chain understanding you provide is absolutely amazing. Just like to understand have you ever worked with Clients in India. As you are aware due to cheap labor Standardization of Warehouse & automation is not like as in US, Europe etc. Can you come up with video on something like Optimization of Warehousing & transportation for India Market. That needs a bot more than a quick answer here! (1) What would you do to try to improve productivity? (2) What 3 KPIs would you measure every day? (3) What is the most important warehouse function?

When our warehouse was a little bit narrow in width and length, do you think it's a good idea if we enhance much in its height ?
@supplychainsecrets

That's a complex question. It depends on many things. Product storage and handling profile, materials handling equipment in use, warehouse construction type, quality of warehouse floor........ It can make sense.........

If we reach our Dispatch capacity, then how much stock we should have in our warehouse, like two weeks or three weeks ?like we r manifecturer also,and we have regular material most often. Pls explain sir.
@supplychainsecrets
@supplychainsecrets 10 месяцев назад
That requires a complex answer sorry. Do you have demand forecasting in place, by SKU? And are your SKUs broken down into groups, like ABC. based on their demand? Then you need to establish what your customer service availability will be. With all that, you can now start to establish your required inventory levels by SKU. It will vary a lot business to business.

Hi Rob, have you ever seen or been involved in any warehouse, manufacturing or industrial complexes that use a fishbone design, and if so what is your take on this sort of storage and racking system?
@supplychainsecrets
@supplychainsecrets 6 месяцев назад
Do you mean a fishbone design in terms of the layout of the aisles? No. What would be the point of that? Have you seen one?
