I almost said "The mortal models are amazing, why haven't you included them?" Then I remembered this is a 40k review :) They should totally allow Emperors Children to take the Hedonite mortals when that book comes out
I kinda hope they add some chaos mortals to the daemons codex and revamp the summoning rules, so it’s kinda like chaos cults summoning hordes of daemons into the mortal realms
I just kinda wish the harp of the enrapturess was looking up with a look of ecstacy, rather than downwards. Would add a whole other Hellraiser/Cenobite level of creepiness to it.
Another problem with the Chariot/Hellflayer kit is that assembling dozens of tiny spike-wheels is that you kind of have to hold it by the spike-wheels. It's like fondling a hedgehog for two hours
I collect Eldar, and when I first looked at this range I said “ew, I hate these models are gross, good thing the Eldar hate them” to “ Its kinda cool how uncomfortable they make me feel” to “Embrace these Beautiful models!”
The Infernal Enrapturess is definitely one of the most graphic 40k models. Really makes me think of the Ben Counter novel "Daemon World".The designer really captured the grimdark Slaaneshi vibes on that one
I'm about halfway through HH: Fulgrim and I think it's fair to say that Slaanesh corruption is the most terrifying. Blood, plague, and secrets are not nearly as horrifying as turning obsession up to 100.
One of the best pieces of 40K lore I ever read was in that Eldar issue of White Dwarf. Issue 127. The story of the Avatar of Khaine lifting the Keeper Of Secrets and breaking its back over his knee... Looking at this KoS, I am so very stoked for the new Avatar of the Bloody Handed God when it drops...
When I was deciding on my first army I was really torn between T'au and Craftworlds, and then I saw the Infernal Enrapturess and was immediately sold on Slaanesh, bloody brilliant model.
The backwards legs on the Fiend makes me wonder if they’re two demons fused together. I think it would be cool if they were, but leads to some fearful questions about the origin of the tail…
I think the main issue with the older Daemon models is that they were designed with Warhammer Fantasy Battkes in mind. So the posing and kind of "squished" nature of them were due to the rank and file nature of that game. You couldn't really do much dynamic posing with the mounts or weapons since the models would only be a few centimeters away from each other. I remember the designers talking about that being one of the best changes from WFB to AoS. It let them do so much more with the regular models and could be more creative. Gonna be interesting to see if they go back to that style now that Warhammer The Old World is going to be a thing.
I find it hard to enjoy many of the humanoid Slaanesh daemons. Too me, Slaanesh is the god of acquired taste, obscenity, and sensory overload. That's hard to represent on a model that looks generally tasteful and immediately pleasing to the eye. I do really love the Fiends though. That's the creepiness I want to see more of.
I remember being so excited for those chariots when they first came out. I brought 4 2 normal and 1 exhaulted for Fantasy Daemons and they were the most awful fiddly kit to put together and this is coming from someone who fixed and painted a Dwarf Flame Cannon for a kid at his local club which is famed for being an awful model to build. But either way Slaanesh is a good range. Yes it needs some updates but it's a solid range that would need minimal work to keep it going for many years to come.
I remember during the height of, what I guess we can only call the SJW-panic, rumors were swirling around that GW was aiming to retcon Slaanesh "because the SJWs made us"... which I always thought was ridiculous. Then BAM. 17:18 happens. That reveal was glorious. And while I do like the Juan Diaz Daemonettes, I also agree with a some of other commenters that the over-sexualized stuff is kinda meme-d out. It makes Slaanesh way more of a one-dimensional god than the lore gives them the potential to be, and that Infernal Enrapturess model was a huge step in the right direction for the flavor of the faction. Solid video btw.
I know this is specificly a 40k review, but i dont like how everything has to have super dynamic poses nowadays, some of us still play ranked-up fantasy
Should have reviewed the AoS side. Slaanesh in 40k is anemic in comparison. The problem with the "Slaanesh is more than just sex stuff" angle is that when your identity is literally anything, you end up with no identity. Khorne and Nurgle have it locked down, but Tzeenth is so far on the opposite end of the spectrum that I have no idea what his gimmick is meant to be. You can't visually represent change on a static model. Slaanesh is somewhere between those where the sex stuff is a big part of the identity, but they found a smart way to branch out from that. Rather than "excess," they went with sheer opulence mixed with hedonism. Slaanesh's models are straight-up prettier than everyone else's. I look forward to the day the daemonettes and seekers get reworked to the same aesthetic of the more modern stuff.
Funny, I was just putting together a starter box of slaannesh and built 2 Hellflayers in less than 30 minutes with no problem xD, I guess it is subjective at the end of the day. Also c'mon man, you didn't show the old daemonetes? those models were by far better!
My Exalted Chariot turned into a nightmare. Parts of it kept breaking off, I'm in the point of losing most of the bits I need to repair it. The Masque's right hand broke off and in process of regluing it's hand back on without destroying it. Yeah, I also had simular things happened to Daemonettes and the Seekers of Slaaneshs: the arms mostly and sometimes their heads. The Keeper of Secrets is one of my favouraite kits, I have some more options with it. The Daemonettes, the Heralds, Fiends and the Masque are alright. Dexcessa, the daemon's caped-wings has a frilled like as it floats above the ground that I like on than Synessa. I like them both.
I still have the pieces of the Exalted Chariot, I've just put them aside for a while until I could get some time to work on them some more again and not forget to work on them, lol. When it first came out in late 2012, I immediately went for that kit to have it as vehicle support for my Chaos Daemons army alongside my traitor guard and Chaos Space Marines. Most of the Daemonettes I've repaired when an arm or head broke off. All good! 👌
Legitiamtely the daemons of slaanesh have a stark contrast between old and new. Most of the new models look amazing, while the old chariots and daemonettes look TERRIBLE. there's definitely the argument of censorship, but mainly its just that most of the models look so slow. Theres a reason that a lot of people use Witch Aelf models for the jumping pose, rather then idly standing around
Personally I don't really like the new daemonette moulds I really really love the way the old metal models look and wish I had them but I hope that the daemonettes get a slight update to their mould but I will agree I love the heads
The reasons why you dislike it are objective, not subjective, if you can identify WHY you dislike putting that chariot together apart from your feelings.
First? But anyways…I always hated Slaanesh for their dumb over sexualized stuff. Now that they are focusing on all excess instead of stupid juvenile pr0n memes, I hate it less.
How do you envision the slaanesh armies? Sure the sexualized part is overrated, but what else? Intrusive Perfectionists? Ravenous Duelists? Artists of Horror? Earbleeding Muses? (They actually do this one). What?
