40K is growing ever bigger, with a big translation to screens on the horizon, there are some big issues that wont be easy to overcome - - back with Lore soon - - enjoyed this adjacent discuss, drop a LIKE - I'll look to throw in these from time to time - along with the Apocalypse stuff, some thoughts perhaps on shows Ive enjoyed over the years.

The 5-part “Astartes” animated series got me into 40k. I’d been interested for some time but the shear density of the lore was intimidating. The series was the kick I needed. Like you said, I didn’t know where to start. I started watching lore videos, mostly yours. I’m not a tabletop game player (and don’t think I ever will be) but now I’m 20+ books into the Horus heresy, I’m playing Necromunda Underhive Wars, and I’m still an avid viewer of 40k lore videos.

As someone who adores the genres of sci-fi/fantasy/horror, and an enjoyer of lore-rich narratives, your content is (in my eyes at least) the golden standard for someone looking to get into 40K. You can spend hours pouring over the different media and never scrape the bottom of the barrel. Tackling this IP is no small task, but your videos do everything short of reading the source material itself. Your passion is infectious, and I know I speak for countless others when I say we truly appreciate your hard work and dedication to introducing people to this enormous universe. I have always wanted GW (or rather black library) make an actual dictionary for the 40K universe. A stepping stone for standardization for words and terminology in the galaxy. It would also be a wonder place for Tau, Ork, and Eldar languages to get their own love in an appendix+dictionary for that species.
@indianasquatchunters
@indianasquatchunters Год назад
That’s what I recommend to people jumping into Tolkien’s works. Get out the appendices/dictionaries and use them as you read along. In IP’s that have tons of characters who are alive and active across massive amounts of time (Elves in Tolkien or Space Marines in WH40K) it’s hard to remember who is who and what they’ve done. I think it would be massively beneficial for a formalized dictionary or appendix to hit the shelves so people could navigate everything properly

@@tarektechmarine8209 the problem comes in when you actually start explaining it to someone. The closest thing I could really call the storyline is that of the emperor of mankind, so following that, there are a million different tangents you could get snagged by, and need to explain. If you choose to include the little thing the emperor did where he stuffed the void dragon into Mars, you need to quickly interject with what the void dragon basically is before continuing. Then when you get to the warp storms causing the isolation of mankind after the golden age, you now need to touch on what the warp is, and why it became active at that time in the physical world. A million different tangents, a million places to get tripped up and lose the attention of the person you're showcasing it to.

I was a sheltered kid who occasionally wondered into hobby stores in malls throughout the 80s and 90s, intrigued by the forbidden worlds of the tabletop games I occasionally witnessed. Obviously a Star Wars fan, and in high school I became a Tolkien fanatic. So I was vaguely aware of both of the Warhammer IPs and knew deep down they were in my future. I Played Dawn of War 1 & 2 a lot, but falsely assumed they were about as deep as the lore went. I think it was DoW2 which finally got me to look more closely at the factions, and to start watching lore videos. I binged videos about the original legions and their Primarchs, and I was hooked. P.S. IMO the DoW games are not a good introduction to 40k. They are not very accurate representations of characters due to RTS balancing concerns (which they failed at anyway). Also being stuck with only Blood Ravens sucks.

On the introduction of 40k to casuals in a movie/show, I think Necromunda: Hired Gun is in part a great example, a visual exposition over a voiced Star Wars style text dump easing the viewer into the core setting, following that the story can pick up with something familiar (frontline soldiers getting ready for battle in trenches etc.) while delivering subtle exposition of the specific setting/situation thru dialog while getting to know and care for some characters that might all die in the next action scene

Shows just the sheer horror of being a soldier in the Imperium whilst also showing it form a very human side. Sort of like 40k's All Quiet on the Western Front. Doesn't show trans human death machines being heroic. Doesn't even show a glorious victory or a valiant last stand. It just shows the tragic waste of life and utter futility of it all.

@@firmak2 Thing is BL books, or whatever they are called these days, kind of rely on the fact that you already have at least a passing knowledge of the setting. A television show could easily over come this by reveals as the series goes on. It isn't an insurmountable problem. For instance all you would need to explain an Inquisitor is a small voice over test reveal at the start then have the narrative show the ideas as the story unfolds. Same as Chaos or Tyranids. As the story progresses and Eishenhorn carries out his investigation more details get revealed. This is no different to any other story.

I think the ideal first movie would be a straightforward, tense war movie. Introduce a newly-raised squad of PDF, and include a few nods to life as an Imperial citizen. Then have the planet invaded by one of the more obviously "evil" factions (like Orks, Tyranids, or Necrons). Make it brutal, but give the squad some serious heroics. Have the requisite Astartes show up towards the end, but make it clear that the PDF troopers are the main characters. At the end of the move (or after the credits), have an Imperial officer show up and say "Congratulations, soldiers. Inquisitor (name) has requested your service personally."

I've been obsessed ever since, but it took me a long time to really navigate and take in the lore. I'd equate it to picking up an MMO that's been out for several years with loads of expansions and so on. It becomes hard to even figure where it starts and what's current. The Primaris feel brand new, yet in the lore they've been around for more than 500 years now, or at least that's my understanding. That constant game of catch up makes getting into things like 40k very difficult. To this day, I still have no idea whats going on in warhammer fantasy and that's not for lack of trying. I myself am a writer, or at least I consider myself one, and I've read and draw upon all the greats in both science fiction and fantasy, and I would argue that Warhammer 40k is the largest and most in-depth lore available. Rules getting more complex is part of simultaneously trying to make it faster to play and giving more options of how to run. For instance, the "blast" rule and how flame weapons work was to speed up from using templates, but a template is infinitely simpler to remember than the math of how many shots, at minimum, you get for any one weapon. Strategems are another- it gives more depth to the game, and allows factions to show splits in doctrine (Astartes being a prime example of this), but it's extra rules that a new player can get bogged down in.

The same models ordered from GW in 2023? Land Raider: $90 Tactical Squad: $60 (3x assault weapon options, sergeant options, and 1x missile launcher) Terminator Squad: $60 Captain in Gravis Armor: $40 (choice of chainsword, power sword or power fist) Land Speeder: $40 Bike Squad: $45 Assault Squad: $60 (includes special weapons) Devastator Squad: $60 (6x models with 8x heavy weapon options) Dreadnought: $60 (includes multiple weapon options, plastic kit) Scout Squad: $35 (includes heavy bolter and bits to have either bolt pistols, shotguns, or boltguns) Total: $550 (shipping not included) So for an extra $202.55, you get.....about 15 extra guns and some melee weapons? It follows relatively small group of characters, and has cool origin story, where viewers could learn about setting with Ragnar. You get to introduced to following factions/and organizations: Space marines, and their creation. Imperial guard, Inqvisition, Orcs, Eldar, Chaos demons and space marines, navigators, heretics, imperial assassins, imperial politics. For locations you have Fenris, various planets with different ecosystems. Space Hulks, space ships and spacecombat, boarding actions, Terra, drop pod assaults. Best part about all of that, is that everything is explained naturally, as all of these things are new to Ragnar as well, so he asks questions how things work and what are everything. There is absolutely no better place to start adaptations. Also, as Ragnar is present in everything, you could hire some kind of big name for the role (perhaps not Cavil himself).

But anything Heresy, Cadia, Indomitus Crusade, etc is just too big, crazy, and expensive to do a live action adaptation. I just don't think it would translate. However, a Horus Heresy premium animated show with the quality of say Invincible or Castlevania could be absolutely fantastic if done right. The only limitation would be what you could animate. Iconic foundational 40k events like the Drop Site Massacre, Calth, Titandeath, Siege of Terra, etc would just make me unreasonably happy. People should have to be able to put in the time and willpower to get into it and understand this complex world and franchise. Because that the kind of person you need to be to be 40k fan. If you wanna like something simpler and more accessible there are other franchises out there.

I personally think that Ciaphas Cain "For the Emperor" would make a great introduction to 40K for a wider audience. His self centred narration keeps the story scope small enough for contained narratives, character interaction and a investigative mystery element to keep audiences engaged. The characters have real relatable personality for any actors to embody and play off of. And a human standpoint in shades of grey morality would be far more gripping than immediately overwhelming with the scope and scale of the 40K universe.

Totally agree. It was the first book I read and remembering the start he goes into detail or gives an explanation to many things because he’s a new commissar and he himself is new to the universe. Dune does a good job of not trying to tell the whole story, at least for a while. Taking cues from them: Imagine a movie about a young promising person on a world, not knowing why being so different than the rest of the populus, rising through the ranks, then being discovered by a gothic force, a armada of spaceships, telling him about the empire, being met by a giant warmaster by the name of Horus. and from there you go into the universe. I mean it doesn't have to be Alpharius (I'd freak out, they are my favorite), but you get the general idea...

Stick to 1 army and maybe a boxed game squad, and the cost is quite mild after the upfront expenses settle. Once a decade your army will get the models refreshed and you'll spend a bunch then. The horror stories come from dudes who can't stop buying whatever the latest box set is because of fomo. Or they buy a big box set because the value is good when they only need like 1/4 the models in the box. Or they start a new army because it's the newest hotness and they just like feeling hype even if it is not a faction they are all that jazzed about. That's the trap that leads to people making cope-jokes about how costly it is.

Season two they are trying to cap this invasion but it gets worse and worse until the series finale everybody dies in exterminatus and the audience is left like “wtf so they just killed everybody?” And the end credits say “well yeah that’s Warhammer” and then they move on to the next idea that’s completely separate

One thing that is often overlooked with the upcoming 40k movies/shows is the various other IP’s that GW was “inspired” by. From Dune, LotR, Starship Troopers, to Aliens etc. These have not been an issue for GW in the niche world of miniatures, but when/if they delve into big-budget movies/shows, I kind of hope GW runs into issues with that stuff considering their disdain for their own customers when it comes to their own IP.

I think making the Emperor a main character is a mistake, I think It would be easier if they focused in on a single conflict. A series about the Wars of Armagaddon with maybe Yarrik as the main character or a freshly examinated Inquisitor could be good as they could slowly introduce all the waring factions as the conflict escalates.

The emperor should stay the emperor, in 30k you could show some his flaw in terms of what he did, but then back it up that he knows what he is trying to achieve, basically a nice Tyrant. After 30k and into 40k he should be a mostly not known as just human but a sigmar like character, where you have him as a good character for HUMANITY. So people that aren't heretics will take him as a hero protag, while still having other factions have their own heretical heroes just not to the same regard cause the emperor's record is a lengthy one and necrons can't be bothered to be good for anyone.

I would do a movie with limited scope from a local perspective, without introducing the general lore, a move like Reddick, Predator 2 or Blade Runner, where the main protagonists know little of the world outside their local setting, and then expand slowly during the movie and let them learn what's outside their local setting via rumors and and heavily censored news that does not correspond with what the protagonists are experiencing. Don't go into the 40k univers with Space Marines, but with a investigation in a dystopian society with "normal" people you can relate to and maybe the Inquisition as a silent ally or adversary.

I believe Titanicus would be a fantastic story to turn into a series or movie as it introduces the empire/mechanicus relationship and the threat of chaos all in a contained story that gives a great starting understanding of the capabilities and vulnerabilities of the Empire. It also follows a series of storylines that cover the stratum of players involved from the conscripts to the administrators. Not to mention the awesome setpieces like a warhound killing a reaver with a trident.

Hive production is a must, and as such you'll have mechanicus there to control and oversee it, same on other worlds agri, space ships and such were the mechanicus are rather lenient because things like tractors, gellar fields/warp engines and lasguns are a must. My own thoughts on a WH40k movie would be something like Starship Troopers, where our protagonists are just regular Joes/Janes that we can identify with, caught up in events far beyond their control or even understanding. Their world could be shown, not told, as they try to survive and do their duty to the Emperor while events unfold. I think the best place for them to start with no matter if it is TV or Movie would be during the fall of humanity's Golden Age and birth of Slaanesh. Titled "Warhammer 40,000: Fall of a Golden Age". Have it start a little bit before the war with the Men of Iron and carry through to the Emperor coming forward to Lead humanity. To me that time period is Vague enough to allow mistakes for the production team but also straight forward enough so they have a template for an over arching timeline. It should be easy to introduce the Races of 40k, explain what chaos is and allows for more lore for one of the most hushed areas of the the 40k verse. It could also go as far as showing when Emperor met with the Chaos Entities to gain the knowledge for the Primarchs.

The view from the outside is that krieg are just cloned robots that charge the line, to some extant true, but in lore you hear them retreat, take action on their own and do as much tactical as they can. Same problem with Cawl, all of a sudden we have one dude that can make primaris, better than the emperor because he didn't do it and can't do it, some mortal women did, so it should be easy enough to replicate primaris by say for example fabius bile who is FAR better at these things.

And all because one son out of twenty returned to SHOW the humans their rightful place under his boots and new toys. Good story telling, cause it reality it would never happen, you cannot unset 10k years of order even as a primarch, this would've had to started as an agreement of all the loyalist primarchs and the the head of the mechanicus agreeing to such a massive jump as well as pooling said resources together for it, yet all they say is 13th prmarch said it happened so it did.
