Once again the Administratum somehow overcame its inherent flaws to land on the broadly correct choice. When it comes to pistols, lesser used and with a lower supply priority, the advantages of Las or even Bolt weaponry become much less pronounced and automatics come into their own. A sidearm doesn't need to be especially accurate, powerful or have tons of ammunition immediately available, it just has to keep you alive that one time in a tight space and at a 'do-or-die' moment which are the circumstances under which the Autopistol absolutely shines! While there's an argument to be made for Bolt Pistols as the technically superior breed of guns in most respects, when all is taken into account Autopistols strike very close to the sweet spot in the three-way tug between stopping power, ease of use/upkeep and practical supply concerns to come out as *the* sidearm to rely on in almost every combat scenario one might face in the 41st millennium. Sometimes even Underhive scum have the right idea.

I think autopistols are indeed, probably the best general-use handgun in this setting. There are multiple better guns but they are either too bulky, too expensive or too hard to construct to ever come close to the reliability and simplicity of autopistols.

You could also argue for a large calibre Stubber, but in that case it would have to have a *lot* of penetrating power to make up for being a single-shot only gun. I'm sure there are officers who swear by their Stub pistols, but I imagine they're more likely naval marines or surgical strike troops than frontline soldiers.

@@omegawilliam95s36 On reflection, and three years later, I think I misspoke. less "frontline soldiers" and more "battle-line troops" was probably what I meant. However if you meant the original post about how Hive Scum sometimes have the right idea, I stand by that on the grounds that the truth can be very unwelcome.

@@MrMortull You could grab a hand cannon in Dark Heresy, an oversized revolver. It was a pistol weapon with a bit more damage and many disadvantages.

It's not like the Mechanicus runs the entire industry of the Imperium. I like to add in all the little tech-guilds and industrial houses which manufacture stuff by a weird mix of license treaties and traditions. Most industrial workers never see a priest as they construct bolter rounds or shoes or groundcars.

I had to look up where he was from when I heard that accent, it was something I've never heard before. Guess I've never heard someone from Romania speak English. I'm not hearing any swapping of sounds, but this is definitely something. I think his English is clearer then mine, but I'm not sure how.

Romanian English can sound rather strange, I agree. It's easy to confuse it for other accents :)

Commissar's Autopistols can executed Guardsman to make them harder. Some Sergeant Guardsman can use pistols, am I right?

Phantom Eye I believe you are right. Although they aren't common.

Almost any guardsman can use them as sidearms but its not a standard issue weapon. Also, in some regiments, only officers can use them.

@@GrimDarkNarrator In the points-buy regiment creator in Only War you could decide what the basic loadout of the regiment was among other things. Some kind of lasgun was pretty much guaranteed, or laspistols for officers, or if you played a vehicle crew. Most of the time the lasgun was so reliable that you never drew any backup weapon but you could spend points to have a little stub pistol along.

You could play a close combat shock regiments, where everyone has pistol and close combat weapons. Pistols counts as close combat weapons in 3rd ed, and two close combat weapons gives models two attacks. So you could have squads of iggies jumping out of the grass brandishing large daggers and laspistols. Sergeants could be equipped with either a lasgun or a laspistol and close combat weapon. A lasgun with a bayonet on it does not count as a second close combat weapon.
