You do know they're only barely human right? Baseline "humanity" in 40k can go without water for 2 weeks and doesn't need to eat for 3 months. Further, if we take the human psycher lore literally, you and I would be nulls. Since we're human and lack any psychic ability. Which would mean that we'd behave very differently from these weird psychic, god-fearing, space apes

When you drop into the shit for the first time its like something has grabbed your heart and is shaking it like a rat in the mouth of a large dog. Then at some point between then and feeling like you're going to throw up, the training kicks in and all those hours of being dead on your feet while being screamed at by your instructors as they hammered in the instincts and skills to survive pay off. Then in the blink of an eye its over

This was great! Short but a solid hook of a story that keeps you listening intently. Bravo This could very easily be the first of a 3-7 part miniseries following this character through several battles, promotions, etc.

There's a book out there that's similar to the first moments of a rookie guardsmen 15 hours by Mitchel Scanlon. The book had the all quiet on the western front feel, As well.

I actually hadn’t learned about the existence of “15 Hours” until I was about done writing this short story. I’m currently reading Grim Repast, but once I get through that I think that may be my next read!

I knew what I signed up for . Makes me wonder how many guardsmen are volunteers granted most of the lore has been retcon, since last I cared to keep up to date but aren't the majority of guardsmen conscripts like don't most people end up in the guard because of Imperial taxation

Like most things in the vast swathes of the Imperium, it varies from world to world. Some are conscripted so their planet can meet the Imperial tithe (like you mentioned), some do volunteer (like our hero Eddard here), or some may have committed a crime and must serve in the Guard as a sentence. It really varies from world to world and also varies from regiment to regiment.

Think about it like this, some worlds straight up will press-gang you into the military. While others, like the one this sap is from, has it setup where standard of living is so poor, that joining the guard is one of the only upwardly mobile things you can do, even if that means you'll never see your home again. Since even if your world's tithe does win whatever heinous conflict it's sent into, unless you're a Kreiger/Vostroyan or a few other named regiments, you're contingent would be given Imperial edict (basically ordered, since you'd view it as an act of god) to resettle the next planet you get deployed on. It's a mixed bag out there, at least he was born in a tube like on Kreig!

The guardsmen are the most badass of all! They are not geneticly enhannsed to feel no fear like space marines, their not brainwashed into wanting to die for emperors forgiveness like the Krieg, they are the regular humans who fight bravely with more honor than anyone else with nothing but pure human fortitude!!!

Could you imagine coming across the emperium as us humans are now. The sheer uncaring nature of their regime to our veiw and how its been normal for them longer then all our civilizations combined. The aggressive hatred they would feel towards aliens and the like would scare and shock us to no end

Mate, ive spent 10.5 literal months of my 32 year alive, and more of others, listening to audible narrators. And you my friend are up there with some of the betters. Keep getting better, and keep your characters accents consistent. And you can do great. Glad to have found you at 828 subs, im now 829. Cant wait for more!

Guardsman: "Drinking Ultramarine piss, im gonna need the plot armor." *Stares into a canteen with 3 day old water he got from his dead friend. Or so he thought was his friend dying in the face of a Waaagh.* Commisar: "Well fuck me pass it over. And lets get to buisness!" Guardsman: "Yessir. Give me the autocannon. I'll hold them off while you enjoy your last drink." *heart races knowing every second would be his last. Screaming into the abyss firing like a madman at anything that twitched. He died. But with the fury of the emporer in his heart.*

Interesting commentr/.narrative. Accent unexpected for a guardsman tale. Many go for what they think a hive guardsman would sound like. Many levels of a hive world. The Imperium needs what it needs. Combat, real combat takes away the vaneer of life. The tone does not reflect seen horrors. Devil in the detail.

So far, I have not gotten in trouble for using others’ art as I write in the description that all art used in the video belongs to their respective authors. That said, if an artist saw this video and wanted me to credit them specifically, I’d be more than happy to do that 😁
