You cant see in hunger of hadar, its not darkness its a different dimension.. You are Blind if you are inside and can not see into the sphere otherwise

@@Nerdarchy Yeah i think lot of the utility from the warlocks comes from their invocations(seriously there are so many spells that you can get from invocations) and their extended spell list, considering that the extended spell lists are generally better than their general list

@@Reluxthelegend I agree, the Invocation Spells are definitely helpful, especially/specifically the ones that don't use the Spell Slot & can be used at will even if they're 1/LR. Examples: 'Shroud of Shadow' (Cast Invisibility at will, without expending a spell slot) 'Trickster's Escape' (Freedom of Movement 1/LR without expending a spell slot) 'Gift of the Depths' (You can breathe underwater & gain a Swimming Speed = Walking Speed; You can also cast Water Breathing 1/LR without expending a spell slot)

I know this video is old, just wanted to say that charm says "it knows it was charmed by you" but it doesnt say it becomes hostile. I love the idea of someone getting charmed and then like 20 minutes after it leave it going.... that cheeky punk pulled one over on me, respect. I am going to slap him upside his head next time I see him, but well played sir... well played.

Ahoy! The main thing I notice is how many of these are concentration spells. This means they have to be weighed against hex. Tier 2 warlocks get only 2 spells slots (though it is nice that they get them back on a short rest), but hex cast as at level 3 or 4 can last 8 hours, and level 5 hex sticks around all day. Given it's useful both for melee and at range, that is pretty great return on spell slot investment. Shadow of Moil is a nice upgrade, but only lasts a minute.

A minute is 10 rounds. Almost all fights end withing 10 rounds. Getting advantage on attacks with disadvantage to your enemies really help. To get the crit for eldritch smite

Hex is not worth your concentration after lower levels. Warlocks can do so much better with that spell slot and their concentration than hex. At low levels it's not an insignificant increase to dpr but at higher levels I don't rate hex compared to the other spells we could be using (hypnotic pattern, fear, sickening radiance, etc).

You can use different colour dye to flavor your game. Instead of a spell modifier of three try a D6.This die does not do crit's (you know who you are).Do you have a enchanted weapon you want to give a PC but cannot decide what magic damage to attach.Attach it to a dye.

Since you brought up Counterspell. My big gripe with that spell, is that upcasting it has absolutely NO effect on spells that are of a too high level. So if I can cast lv. 8 spells, and I try to counter a lv. 9 spell, casting counterspell as a level 3 or as a level 8 spell makes no difference. This is a flaw in my estimation.

Yeah, I give a +2 to the check to counterspell or dispel magic per level upcast.

@@Reluxthelegend I've crunched the numbers on various scenarios and +2 is where I've determined to set it. +1 doesn't make it worth it, and +3 makes it so you can actually counterspell higher level spells, in some cases, with no chance of failure.

Hypnotic Pattern is my favorite my party of 4 killed off 7 ogres and stopped the BBEG as well as her entire party because I cast this and they all failed their save.

My advice if you can try to find a game shop close by checking on Facebook for local games is a good bet too it's how I found my current group and I've been playing for around 3 to 5 months now

I'd note that according to Jeremy Crawford, the Heavily obscured trait is separate from the darkness, meaning everything is effectively blinded to you regardless of darkvision

Shadow of Moil gives you concealment that even other warlock cannot see through. They are not obscured by magical darkness they are just heavily obscured. The only problem with the spell is that it gives creatures disadvantage to hit you but only does damage when they hit you.

But if they can't see you, and you can see them, you have advantage, after all you are heavily obscured "to others"

Hunger of Hadar always seemed like on decent spell to me but kind of situational or maybe just mean lol. I mean if the Warlock is first on initiative, followed by rest of team and enemies are last or close to last, you cast Hunger of Hadar and basically say "sorry casters, you all have disadvantage and melee guys..just sit and wait I guess". So because of that not a huge fan.

I agree here with all except Elemental Bane, but there isnt much for buffing at this tier. Shadow of Moil "could be" one if you consider doing the darkness combo. Far Step could be too, more mobility but it is concentration tho, so no Hex or Vampiric or other things, same with Fly.

Guys... playing Hexblade... you gotta think about the OH CRAP I DIDN'T REALISE THIS WAS SOOO GOOD... spell called Blink.... great utility. Half the time you are not even on this plane of existance so it should qualify as a buff, or defense, last a long time, does not even have a consentration requirement, casts on a bonus action...... when you pop back into the prime material plane, you choose a spot 10' from where you popped out, so you kinda get a 10' movement too...... soooo annoying for a dm who wants to light you up with a firey breath weapon and you are not there to eat the damage, or take the damage from someone who grappled you ....... tooo good of a choise. im sad you did not mention this.

Vampiric touch isn’t good for most warlock types. For a hexblade it can be ok. For most they don’t want to be in melee range trying to touch people with their hands. That’s a really odd pick for the best offensive spell from warlock level 5 through 10. It isn’t the worst pick. But, it’s far from the best.

I don't want to be *that* guy, but something keeps bothering me. Melee is pronounced "may-lay," not "mee-lee." It comes from the Old French, so the letter "e" is pronounced with the "a" sound.

Counterspell is a trap for warlocks at early tiers imho. You only have 2 spell slots, if you are always reserving a slot for counterspell you effectively only have 1 spell slot. Take other spells that are more likely to be useful imho.

The only types of warlock I can see Vampiric Touch being useful for is a Hexblade or a Pact of the Blade warlock. the fact that you have to stay in melee range in order to optimize this spell is a huge drawback imho. Given the fact that most warlocks use Eldritch Blast all day, every day, when exactly is this spell helpful? Sure maybe if your warlock gets cornered someplace and you need this spell to stay alive long enough for the party to rescue you, seems kinda niche otherwise.

You see this is where your broken go to spell formula really shows itself for what it really is. a broken mess. you can't categorise warlock spells in the same way as you would for other classes (beyond the fact that your trying to meaningfully categorise such a tiny list of spells). counterspell might be a great defensive spell but when you have two spell slots and only 10 spells known, it isn't economical to use counterspell.

I would have picked Armor of Agathys as the iconic spell. It's not strictly warlock only, but it has 1h duration, scales, is defensive/offensive, and it's also NOT concentration, so you could stack it with something else like Hex, or Darkness.

That's a Tier 1 spell, not Tier 2. I'm pretty sure it was one of the spells on their Tier 1 list, though.

Shadow of Moil is also very good if you have the One with the Shadows invocation, then is also doubles as a free invisibility.

Everything is already effectively blinded to you when you cast the spell as you're heavily obscured by the flaming wreath around you, not the darkness. Heavily obscured renders creatures effectively blinded to you, which gives the same effects of being invisible, except better because it's not as easily seen through. Truesight is needed to see through invisibility, and many spells let you avoid the disadvantage, but heavy obscurement is probably only pierced by blindsight

9th level Hexblade w/defensive duelist wielding rapier using branding smite. dex 14 cha 18= d8+5d6+4. all the while breastplate and shield=ac18/22 as reaction. 29 avg damagefor 1 min. almost 60 on a crit. using hexblade's curse 33 avg about 65 on crit., and w/thirsting blade that's twice for 60-130 avg /round. If the wizard casts darkness on you when you have devil's sight then it's all made at advantage. BTW variant human w/resiliant veat(con) and warcaster at 4th level so failing concentration isn't going to happen to easily

That's not how Branding Smite works. You get the 5D6 damage bonus on just one attack, not on every attack. The spell says "The next time you hit a creature with a weapon attack before this spell ends, the weapon gleams with astral radiance as you strike. The attack deals an extra 2d6 radiant damage to the target, which becomes visible if it’s invisible, and the target sheds dim light in a 5-foot radius and can’t become invisible until the spell ends". The damage boost happens just once.

I've been trying to make a incubus character the best I've come up with is warlock pact of fiend trifling stats but add the changeling shape shift at lvl 3 or 6 dm dependent and give flying abitlty at lvl6 based off of con and str mods 1 min per mod point

Having played Pathfinder 1st in the past and playing PF2 now, I can see where you're coming from. DnD 5e's simplicity is both its greatest weakness and its greatest strength. The difference between floor and celling for a character being competent at a task is smaller than many would like, build complexity is more limited as a result of the simpler system (not nonexistent though, mind you). On the other hand, dnd 5e is the latest and most prevalent system for dnd being used today. By the simplicity of its design it's also very easy to introduce to newcomers. DnD 5e is a streamlined system with ease of use as its first priority. Ease of use far surpasses game complexity as a priority in its design. That is not an inherent flaw, it's a matter of taste and is, in my opinion, the reason for its success. Accessibility and ease of use. These are by no means bad reasons to favor covering one system over the other. The goals of 5e is a an easy to use and accessible system being sold to a wider audience. As far as I can see it has achieved that goal spectacularly, given the amount of coverage the system has on YT for example. DnD 3,5 has its own weaknesses and strengths. Neither system is bad, they just set out with different goals in mind. I've had a blast in both Pathfinder 1st and DnD 5e. Now Pathfinder 2nd lands neatly somewhere in between, design-wise. Nice with some variety if you ask me. Edit: TLDR 5e is simple, easy to use and accessible. This is both its greatest strength and greatest weakness. It's widespread for the above reasons and it therefore makes sense to cover it.

True the intro specifically states other roleplaying games and yet it is a long, long, time since I've heard you even make a cursory mention of anything 5e. Don't get me wrong I like 5e. But most I know everyone around (myself included) is invested in typically older versions but still its copies of Shadowrun, HERO, Witcher, Legend of the Five Rings, 7th Sea
