Warlord Games Epic Battles Waterloo - British & French Starter Big Unboxing
So here we, after a few months of excitedly waiting, the release of Epic Battles Waterloo is here, pre-orders are starting to ship, with the full street date being 29/01/22. Warlord Games have been very kind over the past couple of months, providing me with preview stock to share with you early, I've really enjoyed sharing my thoughts, working on some painting tutorials and chatting with you all about it. They have been kind once more and sent my own order out with the early overseas shipments so I could bring you this video, so if you're interested in seeing what's in the boxes before yours arrives, or want to know more before you commit, then this will hopefully help. It's a long one, but there's so much stuff. Stu

Folks, just want to mention - after getting the Civil War epic scale mega-bundle and painting it all up, I can tell you that you don't need to be afraid of this scale! The value in these starter boxes in astonishing. I got the $264 pre-order last year for Civil War and the box was SO huge and has SO many sprues. 3,000 infantry on 30 sprues. Just fantastic! And the fact that it's multi-basing means you can paint units faster in an assembly line fashion. And they cram a surprising amount of detail into this small of a scale.

I couldn’t be more excited for a release. This is exactly what I want from an entry into Napoleonics. The feeing of heavy blocks of infantry matching with batteries of cannon and squadrons of cavalry... oh, my. I’m perfectly fine that one has to use a little imagination because every figure isn’t necessarily exactly the correct unit/uniform, etc. I don’t care! I just hope I’ll have the intestinal fortitude to paint this stuff up. I did preorder both starters.

You’ve described exactly what makes this scale so good. It is a lot to paint, but I’m just going to take it battalion at a time, brigade at a time, then small games can be played, that always makes me want to paint more, and so on and so on etc

The ranked up strips and Citadel Contrasts are the perfect combination for painting masses of infantry and cavalry in this scale. Just give everything a white or a light gray primer coat and they're ready for the Contrasts. Also, remember that The Army Painter will be releasing their Speedpaints in March. The reviews I've seen so far have been overwhelmingly positive. Definitely check out that paint range if you invest in any of these massive starter sets!

Thank you. Yep loads of value, when you consider the RRP of a Brigade box of 3 sprues is £25, 16 sprues for £90 is amazing, the with independent stores doing them for £71 it’s just incredible value.

What's interesting about the 95th Rifles is that even though they're famous for being skirmishers, they are nevertheless a "linear" unit. That is, they would still form up in close line and volley fire along with the ordinary foot regiments. At Waterloo, they may have even thrown out their OWN skirmishers from their own ranks like a usual line unit would. I personally like the choice Warlord made of having them in line. They help to bulk out what you get in the smaller, individual brigade boxes they sell. I would most likely just get a couple dozen metal 95th Rifle minis. from another manufacturer and base those as skirmishers.
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 года назад
I don’t hate them being on the sprue, I get why they did it, and they have some good alternative uses. I’ll have to see how many skirmishing ones I need, I’m basing my Skirmishers 4 to a stand, so I might get enough from a couple of sets of Highlanders, but grabbing some from MiniFigs could also be an option.

@@MiniatureRealms Sounds like a good plan. Oh, you actually answered a question that I asked myself this afternoon but wasn't sure...Minifigs 15mm? I've never owned any of their minis. so I wasn't sure how close they would be to Epic scale Waterloo. I guess with Epic scale being 13.5mm, you could go in either direction. Like Kallistra 12mm for Civil War, or 15mm for Waterloo. I was wondering, do you tend to like adding other figure ranges to Epic scale that are slightly larger or slightly smaller? I was really happy with Kallistra, they were pretty close to Epic scale.

I’ve got some MiniFigs mounted Generals and personalities, I think I compare them to epic in Vlog number one. I think the infantry are slightly larger, but as Skirmishers it won’t be far off.

The advantage I see with it is the scale. If you have a ground scale to start off with then, at this scale, you can get more of the battlefield onto your available table top space. The massed look is important. There were lots of cavalry in Europe. This meant that, in open terrain, massed formations were needed. John Stallard is right on this in my opinion.

As always a cracking and through unboxing video Stuart, look forward to your upcoming project blogs and progress. Agree that it would be fantastic to see a combined starter set too, something around the £50~ mark with a few infantry and a cavalry sprue per side with the new rulebook would be an exceptionally good entry into the period and the blackpowder rulesystem. Nice to see the rulebook is an actual bespoke one as described and not the standard A5 book, I think this will help new players a lot. If I had one concern with it it would be that it could introduce a bit of a "you have to have this size base" approach to the rules and introduce a bit of the rigid interpretation you see in the likes of GW games but I'd hope if the rest of the text remains as is the readers would continue to view it as a guideline for gentlemanly discussion and interpretation for an incredibly flexible game system. All round a fantastic release and I look forward to seeing where it goes, still have more than enough 28mm minis to crack on with for my prussian army but I'm sure ill get around to this oneday.
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 года назад
Thank you James. You make some good points on the flexibility of the base sizes and interpretation, I’m pretty sure it’s not worded in quite such an open way as the standard rules, but I don’t think their intention was anything more than it making more sense in relation to the product in the box. Luckily I think it’s pretty well imbedded in the historical Wargaming scene that we all ‘use what miniatures we like’ and ‘base them how we want to’, some newer players might not get that at first, but not to their detriment I don’t think. I’ve just recorded a 20 deeper delve into the book, will be out Sunday/Monday at some point. I’m really impressed with all they managed to squeeze in, it’s a very ‘complete’ product.

Have a few thousand Mini Fig/Old Glory/TTG figs so while the Cav interests me not sure on the infantry until I get a sample sprue in the mag next month to compare. Cav are a tad small but not bad from what I have seen so far, and the arty pieces are much larger than Mini Figs. With the wide variety of different uniforms stacked with so many different nations they would have been better off getting closer to other lines for the cross over sales. Biggest concern is the price spike for the boxed sets. A single army box is MUCH more expensive than the original Civ War release that had 50% more sprues (Price has increased like 30% since then). So metal are still competitive in pricing and easier to dial in specific units. Sprues run roughly $10 USD each vs ordering Old Glory here at about $10.50 USD each for a single unit. Core box sets have all the extras so you save a bit and get extras but the kicker boxes are closer to matching price points. Issue is the sculpts for metal are more detailed and mixed in poses. All that being said I am looking hard at the light Cav boxes right now. Still worth looking into and it will help revitalize a dying era of wargaming.
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 года назад
That’s really interesting, I’ve not gone and done a huge price comparison, but I’m pretty sure they work out cheaper than most 15/18mm ranges in metal over here. Independent stores help the price as well, the cheapest is around £71 for a starter, so around $96 for 16 sprues. I get what you mean about the ACW comparison, though it’s much more expensive now compared to when I bought it. RRP£112 now Vs RRP£90 for Waterloo. That’s £4.67 Vs £5.63 a sprue, so Napoleonic is definitely more expensive. Aside from future small bits like Generals, it will all be plastic though, so the future releases are still a bit cheaper than the Zouaves etc. I’m with you though, if you can get a metal army that your happy with cheaper then I don’t blame you. Im assuming that $10.50 Old Glory unit isn’t 80-100 figures, and gun and a mounted officer though? I know it’s hard to compare individually cast 15mm infantry to strips, but personally I’d factor that into the cost. But I guess in game terms of ‘a complete unit’ I know where you’re coming from.
@shadowcat3163
@shadowcat3163 2 года назад
@@MiniatureRealms rules I use a unit is 6 stands of 4 figs (Napoleons Battles), it also works out for Black Powder. While they have 80 to 100 figs on a sprue that is still 1 unit and extras. Once I get my hands on the Feb Magazine and the Infantry sprue will look and see if I can break them up into NB units. Even if I lose 20 or 30% of the figs I could still get 2 full units out of a sprue plus officer and arty. Cav are 1 for 1 so a no brainer if you want simple figs. Things will all depend on how close they are to the figs I have now. If they had not doubled the price of sprues across the board the last few years would be more likely to jump in full tilt. BA sprues used to be $6 and you could get them when they were on sale for half price around Christmas. Now they are closer to $10 a sprue and there was not the traditional half off sale this year. I do commission work and would bulk up on infantry around then for later in the year. This year I saved a hundred or more by not having that option I guess.

A good update just before release which helps with the pre-planning. I agree, a starter box with two sides ready to play is the way I’d have preferred Warlord to have gone but I’ve bought both Army boxes as you have. Having played a few games of ACW Epic I think my collections will stop at the 16 regiment size (Wilson’s Creek scenario) as any more and they’re just not going to get used. I bought a Union brigade boxes which I’ve sold on because I just don’t need that many. As I use 3 bases to a battalion/regiment these starters are pretty much the full army for me and I’ll probably get the four highland regiments I need (5th Brigade 73rd, 8th Bde 79th and 9th Bde 42nd + 92nd) from the Highland Brigade box. I’ll have enough skirmish rifles and like your suggestion of painting some as redcoats for mixed order markers for the line regiments. I think all I need then are both sides generals and some limbers (they may be controversial?) and I think I’ll be done?
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 года назад
Totally agree on the numbers, I probably have too much of both periods now. Not sure I’m ready to sell stuff on, but I plan to build both collections slowly, building playable armies knowing I have the resources to add more units as and when the whim takes me. They’ve been quite quiet on the generals and other bits, I’m assuming it’s the one thing they’re holding back as a bit of a surprise, as it seems not having at least a Wellington & Napoleon available in the ‘second wave’ today is a bit odd, still I have my Minifigs waiting in reserve should they not turn up.

@@MiniatureRealms Yeah I'm really hoping they will do a characters set, suitable figures at least for Napoleon, New, Soult along with Wellington, Picton and Uxbridge etc. Not seen the included rule book yet (hoping you will do a video on that) so I can't quite fathom how the brigade commander figures are used. Normally in BP it's one commander to a brigade of 4-6 battalions but I see the Highlander and Guard have 3 in each, effectively 1 per battalion? I'm guessing either they've tweaked the rules slightly or they are just being generous giving more than you need. You could always trim the infantry sprue a bit and have a mounted colonel in with one battalion I suppose, or even keep the spare commanders for use as division / corps commanders.
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 года назад
Yep I’m pretty sure commanders will happen, not sure when though, hopefully not too long. The officers on the sprue are very much designed to be used as brigade commanders, just in the normal Black Powder way, you just get extra because of the sprue design. Like you’ve said they can be used as mounted colonels with a little conversion. My fist command stand has two on a circular base, and I’ve converted one to look different (head swap with the Infantry officer and repositioned arm). I show them in my project vlogs on this game I think.

I can only guess that they wanted to provide a smaller scenery piece with each starter, maybe with those being the only suitable sized ones. Yep I think the Rifles will paint up very nicely as any stovepipe wearing British (and Portuguese) troops. The bayonets are too long, but I don’t think that will matter too much once on the table. They could be trimmed, not sure if that would make the whole rifle look too short though. But I’m definitely going to be painting some of mine as Portuguese, and may well as redcoats too.

Interesting comment regarding Minifig compatibility. Would that be the really old first edition (castings came in strips) second edition (finished circa 1993 and the moulds sadly lost) or the current 3rd edition from Caliver books (ghastly imho)? The size and bulk of the figures increased with each edition. I have large 2nd edition collections and struggle to find anything to match. The Naismith 15mm were very small and may be compatible. Many thanks for your information and effort with these videos, cheers.

I have a few mounded officers/generals from the Caliver books, and they match very well (I’m personally only looking for the odd alternative General etc, not worried about the infantry, I really like the strips). They’re not the best sculpts, but that’s the kind of size. I don’t know much about the range, seems pretty old, so figured they may have been an older range re-released. I’m no expert I’m afraid, this is me getting back into Napoleonics, last time was 6mm Heroics & Ros in the 90s 😂.

Awesome stuff, Looking forward to getting stuck into this range myself. Plan on doing peninsular war, hoping white/mismatched trousers + more arid looking bases will be enough for people to overlook the shakos. Riflemen in line won't be much use to me. haven't seen the sprues in person yet but reckon I could cut out a few individuals from each strip and combine those with the individual riflemen from 2 boxes of highlanders to effectively double up on skirmishing rifle bases, hoping to get 18 all together, 9 95th and 9 60th, that way I can run them in units of 3 or 4. Would be interested to know if you think this would be feasible, having seen the strips in person. If my maths is correct, I would only need to cut out 3 riflemen from each strip in the starter box, 60 total + the 48 skirmishers from the 2 boxes of highlanders. enough for 18 bases of 6. Hopefully we see a peninsular war sprue sometime in the future as well, stovepipe line + skirmishing light company would be very nice.
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 года назад
I think just the way you paint them will have a huge effect, especially at this scale. I’m going to play around with a Stovepipe conversion, at least with one regiment, but can’t see me doing loads, especially if it takes ages. I hope we will see a Peninsular Brigade box one day, I’d certainly buy loads. As for the the Riflemen, I’ve seen them painted as Stovepipe troops, looks pretty convincing, and I can see some use as Portuguese regiments as well, so maybe that will be if use in your Peninsula project. As for cutting the strips, some will cut better than others, you will definitely lose some shoulders and elbows, you can either green stuff these back or just smooth off and hide them with paint. I’m going to use only 4 skirmishing rifles to a base, so they will go a bit further. I did it with the test stands I did for Voltigeurs and I think it looks good.

What other brands would match these? I guess Pendraken might be a good match for cavalry and commanders. What do you think? Would you make a video about matching this range?
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 года назад
Pendraken are very small is comparison, very much true 10mm, much shorter and slighter. These are smaller than most modern 15mm/18mm, though they scale quite well against from of them older more ‘true’ 15mm ranges. I’ve only had personal experiences with MiniFigs, the range currently on sale by Caliver Games in the UK looks to work quite well, I’ve got a few mounted officers/generals to boost my command and provide some variety. I have a series of project Vlog videos on the channel for this, in Vlog 1 I show some comparisons with the mounted officer packs. I can’t link it I’m afraid for RU-vid will delete my comment, but if you’re on Facebook, search for ‘Warlord Games Epic Battles Napoleonic’ group, I set it up a month a couple of months back, there’s some other examples of chat about this there. I think only yesterday did someone share examples of a full infantry regiment of MiniFigs Prussians based up like Epic. I think there are a couple of other ranges that might be close in scale, but wouldn’t want to recommend anything I hadn’t seen myself. Hope this helps.

@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 года назад
It really depends on the size of game you’re wanting to play, rather than the number of players. You could play a very basic game on a 4x4, but it would be only a brigade or so a side. With a 6x4 you could fit a divisional sized game, and squeeze on more if needed. For larger games an 8x4, or even 8x6/13x6 would be fantastic.

Brilliant video. Subscribed. Amongst others, I had Waterloo armies using AB figures before I emigrated 10 years ago, sold them or gave them away (talk about big mistake). I am just about to take the plunge again into Naps and have even had a partial AB French order arrive. Now this WL release has come along and I hit the brakes. I was dubious at first but the sheer amount of figures and variety in these boxes (esp now the Highlanders and Guard have come out) is staggering and, as I'm very much more into playing than painting these days, these will be fine using Contrasts and highlights as your other vids show. Just a BIT concerned at the basing sizes given an infantry battalion in line would be the standard BP 24cm. The biggest tables we can use in reality are 6x4 so we try to use 40mm bases (x4) for infantry battalions or even 30mm (x4) for 7 Years War. Might need some care depending on how I decide to trim these. A 30mm base is ideal, just cut the infantry in half, but likely can fit only 2 cavalry on a 30mm base, might look a bit sparse. 40mm is ideal, 3 cavalry per base (x4) but the infantry would likely have a 2mm gap each end and those 4mm between the bases in line. Not a show stopper and probably the preferred option given the benefit of denser looking cavalry regiments with 12 vs 8. Just ordered the British and French starters along with the now up for pre-order Guard and Highlander boxes. Can't wait!

Thank you again 😊 The frontage is definitely something to consider, I remember that being a big discussion point in the community when Epic ACW was released last year. At the time I thought it was a bit of an oversight, but I didn’t really fully get what they were trying to achieve I don’t think until I watched some interviews about this release. The visual spectacle of the large unit was the main goal, with the obvious benefits of being able to cheaply build big armies, and some benefit from scale. This doesn’t really solve the issue of unit frontage on a 6x4 though, but that’s easily solved by just using less stands of models on smaller tables, or like you’re planning reducing base sizes in the first instance. You won’t have any issues with the Cav, they’re all individual models, and it sounds like you’re on the right track. 3 will fit nicely on a 30x30, I’m actually increasing my cavalry base sizes from 60x20 to 60x30, quite a few people are doing this as with the 20mm depth the models overhang a little. I’m not worried by the 60mm per stand for Cav, I’ll just reduce the stands if needed. For Infantry you will find you can cut the strips in half, but they will require a decent about of fixing up afterwards. The models aren’t just touching each other, they’re sculpted very much as one in some places, so you will be resculpting arms and cartridge pouches etc. just bear that in mind. I’m just going to adjust the number of stands I use per regiment in some instances, mostly dependant on scenario and table size.
@Edward-Plantagenet
@Edward-Plantagenet 2 года назад
@@MiniatureRealms Ah right! Thanks for that. Didn’t realise the figures were touching, I’ll have to look more closely. Easy to get carried away in the enthusiasm! I suppose we could fudge the mechanics we use in the other rule sets and use the standard size bases but only for lines but it will sure take out the visual appeal if we can’t show March and Attack Column. Kinda destroys the concept really. 6cm bases though I think will be very difficult on a 6x4. We also play Bataille Empire and in 15mm 6cm is WAY too big.

They have provided changing distances as an optional rule, so it’s there. I think for me a lot of that depends on game and table size, if I’m playing a divisional game on a 6x4 then I’m likely to reduce ranges, if it’s a huge multiplayer game on a massive table I may well leave as normal, otherwise the game might take too long. Easy to change to suit needs as per game I’d same.

That’s not a bad plan. I remember my Epic ACW starter shipped on its release day (a Saturday) last year, and didn’t arrive until the Tuesday or Wednesday. This mainly because it fees like I have got the fun out of the product well before getting it. The preorder system only makes this worse. There is for me also another factor which Kickstarter is the worst offender of. When you buy anything you are excited and fired up about it. However if that product takes 3 months or more can you stay that interested? In the case of Kickstarter we are talking years in some cases. Anyone who has gotten involved with Kingdom Death knows what I am taking about. I like this new release however I still find it hard to justify £25 per brigade. If they released seperate command strips so we coul make 4 Regiments out of a box as opposed to only 3 then I don't see how it'll be great value and cheaper than say 10mm as my planned Napoleonics 10mm project has x8 regiments with 18 men per regiment coming at £24. So for me 10mm even in metal is still better value. All be it these are very tempting. If they released extra command strips on a separate sprue I would be massively tempted and have 3 stands per regiment. However as it is at the moment I don't see that they're better value for the size my project currently is. In my AWI I have x32 regiments planned for both British and American each not including Hessian and French all at 10mm and looking as the entire project at about £400 to £500 for everything. The British Regiments have 24 men, 16 line and then 4 light and 4 gren. So the British Army in my AWI can have 32 Regiments along with 8 light batt of 16 men each and 8 gren batt of 16 men each too. Bringing just the British foot troops alone at fielding 48 regiments/battalions all in 10mm. My AWI project however is a love of mine and I'm intending on doing a full AWI North American Campaign including the West Indies hence so many Regiments. I figured due to the fact the AWI is my most loved period, that should be the one I invest most of my money/time into. If they released an AWI version of these Epic Battles I would seriously consider them however as the AWI you can get away with fewer regiments. For Napoleonics though 3 regiments per brigade here on a 6x4 table, most you can get on a table is about 9 total. I prefer battles going into the teens to 20s for regiments on the table!
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 года назад
I get where you’re coming from, when comparing with 10mm, it’s likely that 10mm armies may be cheaper. I think this is much better compared to 15mm in scale and price, but I get that you like/have 10mm. It’s worth noting that the price ‘per sprue’ (or 3 sprues for a brigade box) is much lower if you get a starter set, you get 10 sprues of infantry and 6 cavalry I think for £90, so that’s just over £5 a sprue Vs just over £8 in the brigade boxes. It might also be worth looking at independent retailers, the starter boxes at around £70, or £20 for the brigade boxes (around £4-7 a sprue). It still doesn’t compare to your 10mm regiments, but that’s with 80 men not 18, so it’s going to be more. I guess if you work out the price per miniature the Epic would be very cheap. Not sure if they will do command strips, but MiniFigs are pretty close, so you could potentially look at buying some command and doing conversions. Either way, two pretty good options for affordable armies. I think more the point would be if you wanted to play 20 regiment games as you’ve said on a 6x4, that’s not going to work with Epic, you either need a bigger table or maybe 10 or 6mm. I personally really like the look of 60-80 men in a battalion, if Epic hadn’t come out I was going to use 10mm Pendraken, but I was planning on using lots more than 18/24 models per battalion, that’s just a shrunk 28mm look to me, but I can’t argue it’s practical for collecting and playing big games. I’ve settled for Divisional level games on a 6x4, saving the bigger ones for when I can get together with others and use a big table somewhere. Best of luck with whatever you decide 🙂 Thank you for watching and commenting.

@@MiniatureRealms I love it and I must admit I would be tempted. And get that in terms of 15mm & 28mm they're definitely good value indeed. Compared to 10mm for the same amount of men they would be too. However I think I'm more of a, this stand represents 60 men with 4 figures haha. For small maybe little battles within big battles, i.e. Hougoumont, these are perfect and I would happily do that. Sadly I'm a sucker for epic battles where for me Hougoumont would be a small part of the battlefield. Believe me, if they release individual sprues with extra command and flank companies... I may be swayed easily as they do look amazing and I do really like them. I've spent the last two nights figuring out how I could utilise them. However for now I still plan on 10mm with less men.
