Thank you very much for doing this video! I have built dozens of Tonebender clones, and I have NEVER seen an OC75 which was not in a black painted glass enclosure. I couldn't understand how Warm Audio could source enough OC75's of suitable quality to build hundreds of these and at such a low price. Now I know! The Germanium transistors in this pedal ARE NOT OC75's no matter how many times Warm Audio say so on their website. Just because Warm Audio says that a Ge transistor measures within the parameters of what THEY say are acceptable for an OC75 does NOT make that transistor an OC75. I have lots of AC128's (a later replacement for the OC75) which measure within the wide variation of what is acceptable for an OC75 which I paid about a tenth of what an OC75 would have cost me - but I would never remove their designation and rename them as OC75's! Warm Audio seem to be buying up large numbers of generic Ge transistors and are then selling them on as extremely rare and desirable products. This smacks of sharp practice at least. I'm not the only one saying this - Guitar Pedal X has also said so on his review of this pedal.

They did make oc75's in a metal case but these are not those. These are definitely relabelled. They might sound great but it is false advertising.

Whatever the transistors actually are, the ‘OC75’ mode of the Warm Bender sounded the best to me …

Weird that they took all these measure to conserve on PCB space, and yet they used like the biggest rotary switch you could find for just 3 positions. Great video! really cool pedal

People need to be wary these days of rebranded germanium transistors...the desirable British ones that back in the 60's were randomly picked based on the cheap price and availability and hastily jammed into fuzzboxes to get to market before the whole "wanting your guitar to sound broken" fad disappeared. Go with your ear and forget about "gorgeous" fonts and numbers.

Thanks for this. There’s a lot of hate for this pedal elsewhere, which is understandable due to WA claiming NOS transistors when clearly that’s impossible from an availability standpoint. Kinda shady advertising. Regardless of that, I have been kind of obsessed with the TB II for about five years and have tried a lot of them and now that I have this one, my search is over. Love this pedal, and I think what really makes it special is the voltage sag switch. That’s where you can really dial in some authentic vintage sounds.

It's tricky, technically NOS stands for "new old stock", which could mean just sat on some shelf somewhere unused. Unfortunately it has an underlying meaning of referring to the specific part #s and package types used in vintage fuzz pedals. The transistors in the warm bender very well may have sat unused for years, but they're clearly not the identical transistors in vintage tonebenders. IMO, these discrepancies will always pale in importance to a subjective listening test. If it sound good, it IS good, regardless of the specific parts used.

Plus, NOS is like VOS, Vintage Old Stock. It originally meant actual original old stock that had sat somewhere and is now being used. Now it means that the thing is new but was made to look like NOS or VOS.

Super curious about the VHT pedals, esp. the D-Boost and the compressor/boost dual pedal. There's a drive pedal and a delay/reverb dual also.

Thank you for sharing.Could you verify that the external power adpater only works if you remove the battery? Meaning as long as you have a battery connected it wont use an external power source. Thanks

@@graybenchelec No worries. I will figure that out with a dead battery.

In the intro, I actually thought the Murphy lab was the standard. I liked the top and the sound better on the standard.

Is a Foxy Tone box in the future for a tear down? I have built a couple of clones of the original circuit that JD Sleep based his kit on and am curious about any differences that may be there.

Nice video Joe. Weird thing to pick up on perhaps but what do you think about the smaller form factor pots? There seems to be a pervasive collective opinion online that bigger pots = better, but I've always liked the feel of those smaller pots, they just seem nicely weighted. They certainly seem good enough for Boss so reliability wise they must be fine? Another instance of the guitar industry struggling to move beyond the 60s???
@graybenchelec
@graybenchelec 6 месяцев назад
For sure, the smaller pots work totally fine. No reason to believe pot size has anything to do with tonal quality, good or bad. Some with the rotational force, you can make heavier or lighter torque pots in any size.

Is there any reason why the PCB not coverd using UV PCB Masking? because good quality proper PCB is cheaper to produce, today. By using masking the board would be much durable & less issue while soldering/manufacturing process. Does it for tonal quality reason? For me it's absurd, haha 😅

As cheap as soldermask has become, it's always cheaper still to leave it off.

Wonder if you could replace the sag switch with a pot and make a “feed” control?

Each Transistors voltages for EBC Emitter Base Collector changes voltages compared to using a Battery to using a Power supply, any reasons why?

I've been hearing a lot of chatter about the mysterious of these "NOS" germanium transistors. No one seems to have seen them before...seems a little fishy.
