N54 Cowl Delete)
In this Video I will be showing you guys the consequence of Deleting your Cowl filter assembly and/or eliminating your stock Cabin Air Filter Assembly (N54 Cowl Delete). I came to this finding while searching for a ticking noise my car currently has. I noticed a lot of guys delete this assembly when installing their burger motorsports cowl filters (BMS cowl filters N54), Hence I desided to upload this video. So make sure to watch this short video, as you will see the harm from deleting your cowl. This way you will be able to understand how this can Kill your engine over time.
Here is the 🛠️ Tool 🧰 that I used in the video:

The biggest problem is not the missing cowl, but the missing engine cover...
@user-zj7gt4lf6r
@user-zj7gt4lf6r Год назад
The engine ticking sounds like a lifter tick. Very common issue. And the water inside the cylinder head is more than likely a worn head gasket. Eliminating a cowl cover will not drain water inside your engine by getting past your spark plug.

I have the full cowl delete kit from Turner Motorsports (cable bracket, ECU and booster covers, cowl filters) and because of this video, I made sure to put my engine cover back on before it rained. It’s been raining a lot over the past few days and my car/engine has been fine. Cowl delete + Engine cover and you’re good.

I know you had good intentions here, but your misleading the community with this video. I have 10+ BMWs in my fleet, and 6 of them are BMW E90s, ive got all variations the engine and all cars have had their cowl removed. So if you take the 6 cars, and add how many years each car has been running without its cowl, I can say I essentially have witnessed 60 years of cowl delete between them all, I can safely say this is not correct. If you have put back the spark plugs and coil packs correctly, there cannot be any water penetration to the engine, it just cant make it past the spark plug. I have never seen a wet spark plug like you are describing when pulling them out, and I replace them all every 10k miles so I am regularly inspecting them. So the video would be better suited adding a warning at the end, this is what happens when you delete your cowl and fail to to properly install spark plugs and coil packs. Now, moving past that, you should note that you have done the cowl delete incorrectly in my opinion, you have left your cabin intakes completely exposed. Now that will allow large debris and rodents into your interior, terrible idea. You need to get coovers for those inlets, BMS sells them and they are excellent, all of my cars have the filters on it and no problems. They are washable, but the plastic tends to rot in about 6-7 years in the engine bay going through the heat cycles. My final point to add to this, is that there is one particular situation where the cowl delete can cause massive problems. On one of my E90s, a 2006 325xi has the older N51 variant with the magnesium valve cover, the one that has the metal gasket. This engine was found on the 2006 models that were produced in the first few months of the year. If you do the cowl delete on that model, the water pools on the back of the valve cover by cylinder 6 in the cavity by the injector and can cause rust and will cause it to deteriorate. This happened in my vehicle and caused the valve cover to create a little cavity that then turned into a blowout, looks like a bullet shot out of my valve cover. Replaced it and have no problems. I treated the new valve cover with some extra coatings/sealants to resist rust and I re-coat that back section every year to ensure it does not occur again. Good luck!

So do you use something to cover up the ECU & master cylinder/reservoir when doing the cowl delete? Or do you just leave it exposed? I'm thinking about doing the delete on my 06 e90 n52
@kiemyster420
@kiemyster420 Год назад
@@alextran8188 it's a useful mod only if your constantly working on your car, otherwise it does not make sense unless you just want to hear your engine noise more. The ecu is completely protected by it's box, you just have to ABSOLUTELY make sure it's tight and properly clipped on, and water will never enter. I would say check for cracks because it's plastic but I've never seen any of my ecu boxes get cracked over time so it seems they are made very well. Master cylinder will also be fine as is, just make sure to clean out the leaves once in a while and ensure the drainage catches are clear of debris, if you park under trees or near trees, this is important for many reasons. Any other questions let me know

Unfortunately water dose not seep into a combustion chamber unless your spark plug is loose. Your spark plug may have been loose via the noise on the video. Condensation is most likely the reason for water on piston

Yeah man, thats exactly what I did right after I recoded that footage. The main issue that I see is in the long run and how much exposure the car has with water. We all now that water is a MF. It likes to either rust, corrode, or cause oxidation on a variety of materials. For instance; Aluminum doesn't rust, but it does corrode. Aluminum corrosion can happen gradually over weeks, months, or even years, if constantly exposed to water. I dont think is super alarming thought, specially if you keep your car indoors (that's when it comes to corrosion) The other concern would be water and/or moisture in close proximity to your DME. I used to run with the cowl delete myself, but it was until what I found, that I decided to protect the engine from water from getting in, by modifying the cowl. It is for this reasons, it is better to be safe in my opinion. I was super worried after I recored this footage so I just ended up modifying the cowl to aliviate any headaches.

I can only agree with your opinion, of course heat builds up through this cover, but I wouldn't completely omit it. I got an engine wash a few weeks ago and was able to notice after 1-2 weeks that my ignition coils were all rusty because water got into the spark plug shaft from the engine wash. This caused me to have misfires at higher revs. I'll swap spark plugs and coils tomorrow and hope the problem is fixed. Greetings from Munich Germany.

Having a plastic cover on would have prevented the water getting in on top of the engine for sure. Not only prevented the outcome that I saw, but also prevented water from touching the ignition wires. The main issue that I see is in the long run. Water is a MF. It likes to either rust, corrode, or cause oxidation on a variety of materials. For instance; Aluminum doesn't rust, but it does corrode. Knowing how much the DME can cost, and seeing this issue I just saw. I think is better to be safe. Aluminum doesn't rust, but it does corrode. water is meant to go under the cowl… thats why its raised… all the cowl is doing is protecting the filter from dust/debris moisture will still get behind it. bms filter is washable when you see it looking crappy, just clean it.. the filter seals to surface tighly, done.

You just dropped a jewel 💎 for the bmw community. Well all that have this cowl delete. Another negative is your ac ducking in that hot air makes it hard to cool cabin efficiently. At 🛑 lights. And idle. My ac wouldn’t feel as cold as when I’m driving. Leading me to conclude its cause missing cowl. I was already gonna swap back oem cowl. This just solidified that.

Thank you brother 🙏, it is much appreciated 💯 It does make a difference, I live in South Florida and it gets hot as heck in here. After this incident, I just ended up modifying my cowl which it looks way better that before. Safe to say that the best option for better working room and water protection is to go M3 cowl ($$$ an arm and a leg) or modifying the existing cowl.

There are plenty of ways to make power and improve cooling that don't include soaking your gofast bits. Like honestly, if you think 10 lbs weight reduction, a slightly better sound, and supposedly better cooling is worth possibly destroying your engine and/or dme, then go for it. And as for ease of access... I get it. But c'mon, it's only a couple bolts and wires. You can take the extra two minutes removing it whenever you need to. The only way I could justify doing this to my car is if I could afford to buy 20 more bmws (and I definitely cannot lol).

This would seem like a reasonable assumption, EXCEPT that my car had the cowl deleted many years ago, and my ECU and Sparkplugs are dry as the Sahara. And I'm in the SE where we get hell raising thunderstorms almost every week, multiple times in the late afternoons during spring and summer. So, NO! That's obviously NOT the culprit. Probably loose spark plug, as water doesn't push through that tightened fit. It's all good, I know you are just trying to help people so I'm not looking to flame you here, but I do feel a need to correct the misinformation. The cabin filter housing is a heavy pos that these cars do NOT need. EVERYBODY wants to blame every problem on removing it, because most bimmer owners learn quickly that they don't want this heavy pos on their cars and remove it. But of the thousands of bimmer owners who are either in the CCA or on forums I frequent, almost NONE of them have had any problems with the cowl delete. IF anyone is paranoid about it, run your own heat-shielding, as a way of shielding this area from direct spray, if it makes you feel better. But mine (335i E92) doesn't have any of that, and mine is in perfect condition and doesn't have any water in the plugs, or plug area. SO the empirical information proves it's not the cabin filter housing removal that caused your problems, or anyone else's.

Steve. I'm glad that up to this point you haven't had any issues. But honestly, who in the world is going to take a look at their engine right after it rains, before turning on their car? Before this video, I was running around without any cowl or engine cover. I had the cowl delete for a very very long time; and I too used to think that it would cause no harm. While my car had been sitting there for weeks without driving plus some raining in between, one day right after it finished raining; I turned my car on and immediately opened the hood to look for a ticking sound I was experiencing. It was at this exact moment I saw water start to bobble up and evaporate on top of my engine, next to coil 5 and 6 in the little holes that are around that area. Remember, I did not have my engine cover on. After noticing this, I did not think much of it (yet It stayed in my mind). Following this, I didn't work on the car for weeks since I was very busy and out of the country (of course we were in the rainy season). Once I finally got back to work on the car, that's when I discover what you saw on this video. My car at this moment had NOT been turned on or moved for over a month (it was also raining nearly everyday). Now while I do understand that having water inside the cylinder head is very very odd, it is Not impossible. For this is what I experienced. Water is a MF and it will filter through just about anything. Water will go through a rock or concrete if you give it enough time. Regardless, Im putting this information out there for everyone to be conscious and cautious. For everyone who has this mod and for everyone who may be concerned to run their own test and verify for themselves. I know what I saw and I know what I have experienced, Yet it is up to everyone to do their own test and decide what they want to do. Maybe a little bit of water is no concern for many people and for many other people maybe it is. For anyone who really wants to know, just run your own test without the engine cover and obviously without your cowl and see for yourself. Best of luck to everyone. #N54Gang

@@CrazyCarMods Yeah, I'm not trying to be a dick here, but the problem with your car was NOT the cowl delete, it was owner neglect, as you've detailed in your statement above. I don't let my car sit for ANY time without driving and checking it out. That is a death sentence for these cars. I drive my car every single day, and in the spring and summer, through tons of serious thunderstorms. And for YEARS, I've not had any build up of water on my engine nor my ECU unit, as my car has the proper rubber deflectors around that part of the engine, to direct water away from the engine. Maybe yours is missing those, I don't know. What I do know, is your letting your car sit around for long periods of time without any attention or maintenance of it, and then suddenly just going and starting it without checking it out IS TERRIBLE OWNERSHIP OF ONE OF THESE CARS. THAT is where you problem lies, NOT with the cowl delete. We have more than seven thousand members of our CCA chapter, and many of them are 3 series owners, who all have the cowl delete done for years and years without problems. So that's called empirical evidence that it's not the problem.
