I had to decline two clients in past couple of months. One took it super well and they said they'd love to chat again once my schedule is lighter. The other one got mad at me and never replied back. I was graceful with both, but clearly this is when you see if they'd be terrible clients.
Again, this is a very straightforward video, I appreciate the information, the three P's principle is an absolute must... As you said in another video back then, and I also have heard from other illustrators: clients tend to lower what they are willing to pay when working with illustrators from South America for example. I keep thinking about that, I mean, I understand I do not have the same life cost as some illustrator from London, but it does have to be fair right !? I really wanna have an agency, but with few professional works, it's been hard. Thanks Man!
Yeah, and fair can mean different things to different people. If cheapness is the only thing the client wants, it's probably not going to be fair to the illustrator, wherever they are
Hi James, thanks for these videos. Could you do a future video about using references and copyright? I'm currently working on some portraits of artists for my portfolio. I try to work from several reference photos so I'm not completely copying one photo. Today I'm working on a portrait of Judith Kerr, so I thought I'd be fun to add her tiger character. I'm now thinking I should change the tiger so it looks more like how I would draw a tiger, rather than a copy of her character. I'd love to know your thoughts on this. Thanks 😊
Good suggestion! i'll see what i can do with it. Yeah you definitely don't want to get too close to the character. You'll be able to do a better job with your own interpretation anyway, rather than imitating someone else. Seems like you've got the right idea using multiple photos.
I declined a picture book because the client claimed I’m 30% more expensive than anyone else. I said there’s a reason for that! She asked me to drop my prices and I said no in respect to my clients who can and do pay the price. Dont sell out!
