This barely touches the surface of what burnout feels like. I've been burned to the crisp for the past two months and I'm on the verge of quitting. I can't shut my brain off and stop thinking about school, I'm sleep deprived, and I don't enjoy the rest of my life anymore. On top of all that, my mental acuity has dropped down significantly. I'm having trouble recalling basic words and information. The entire educational system in my country and the general attitude of society towards teachers are messed up. Managing over 200 hundred, socially undeveloped and emotionally neglected teenagers who crave attention is inhuman.

Well... same. I'm only on week 4 of the school year. SPED with very big behaviours and inadequate classroom staff... etc.... You mentioned exactly how I've been feeling.

I think this is my 12th and last year. I am stressed and burned out. I really think teaching is bad for my mental, emotional and physical health. I teach, work during my planning period, work when I get home, and work on the weekends. It never ends. I can’t even enjoy my weekends. There is no time off for me.

That’s on you. I am special Ed, stick to my contract hours and feel fresh years into this thing. Granted I don’t have to grade things, design lesson plans or deal with angry parents regarding student grades. Don’t forget to clock in/clock out buddy

@@eb3219 In the general population classroom we get students with special needs that have been conditioned to believe they don't have to put any effort into learning. I have no idea how that becomes the mindset in these children.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Causes of teacher burnout are: 1. Busy work from administrators like book reviews and portfolios. 2. Not valuing a teacher's personal time with Math nights, etc. which takes hours of prep for a dog and pony show that means nothing in the long run. 3. Insubordination laws which force teachers to do busy work as long as it is legal. 4. Parents and students not being accountable for low test scores with teachers being fully accountable even when students purposely fail the test. 5. Having to make calls and emails about students failing the class even though the parents have full access to their children's grades.

Yes those signs are so important to take note of and not ignore. I think we also need to realize we can't do it all. One Fab Teacher, Ms May, does a video on this topic with some helpful advice. Keep taking good care of yourself so you can continue to enjoy teaching and helping others with your great ideas in your vlogs.

I've experienced burnout twice. It's made me question my purpose in my work. The first time I was pregnant and unfortunately needed to work overtime on a regular basis (it was at a daycare/preschool, so we would clock in and out). Staying overtime was not voluntary on my part, we were just short on staff in the late afternoon hours! It was so hard to wake up in the morning and go to work.Second time was this past year at a different preschool, but the environment is so much more loving and positive! I should have sought support from my director and fellow teachers, because I could have really used a mentor. This second time I allowed some stresses from my personal life to interfere with my work life.I'm excited to start this school year with these experiences under my belt, with greater motivation, and with all the insights I've gained from watching Teacher RU-vidrs. :)

This is my first year and I’ve already had trouble. I got sick and was out for a week. I am also in school so trying to teach and go to school is really burning me out. The normal things such as kids being added to my roster and it just upset me because I already had copies made for the week and I had to print out copies with my own money since I didn’t have anymore copies at work.

Three strikes & I was out! Difficulties I faced as a teacher - 1. Dealing with challenging student behaviour - eg. first day back after cancer surgery, hit in the face by a deliberately thrown book. I should’ve ducked, but was concentrating on staying between the book thrower & the student he was trying to attack. 2. Lack of effective leadership. 3. Excessive curriculum & data requirements. I loved working with my students, even those - sometimes ESPECIALLY those - with challenging behaviours, but it was very draining & I was always in a state of hyper vigilance. Poor leadership - or none - was frequent & excessive demands on teachers’ time, skills & patience was CONSTANT. Over my teaching career I dealt with AT LEAST one of these difficulties daily, though it was usually two and often three. When it became ALL THREE, EVERY DAY, I decided 39 years was enough and quit. BEST decision of my life!

But when you have a principal who comes into your class and all that person does is scan for faults, things that are wrong, question about what you do, telling you that what you are doing is not good enough, or what you do is still wrong, never right, did you differentiate for each and every student needs, problems, etc.

Recently I've felt like my teacher is burnt out, I wanted to double check, my peers are quite possibly some of the worst I've seen in a long while, I contribute to that too. I just want to make my teacher feel better about her boring job. See I study psychology and I can notice signs in people that others don't, this includes my teachers, but it's a little unsettling when a young person practically puts your feelings into words, I'm still very young, I'm below the age of fifteen, most people tell me I act older than my age, which I take pride in, I can have meaningful conversations with adults and my teachers can take breaks from being teachers when they talk to me. This doesn't change the fact I don't know how to approach them about stuff like this, I was hoping getting a point of view from an educator would help me understand, thank you very much for educating people on these topics, but I suppose it's just your job, you are a teacher after all.

I know this is an older video but I appreciate your wording and the advice you used here. I'm going to school to become a teacher myself and I believe I can use this helpful advice to separate work and life as much as possible when possible. I got burnt out at my last job as a manager after 4 years of it and just thought the position itself was bad but I realize now that I was burnt out in an unhealthy way and didn't really receive mentorship or advice on that subject. Thank you for the share!
