As a communication engineer let me tell you there's no way to detect illegal reception on a TV however, they can stand outside and record any sounds coming through your windows, look its simple, do it legal be bullet-proof NO broadcast recording or watching of TV channels, NO BBCI player, No live broadcasts such as on You-Tube, Netflix, Now TV, Amazon, Disney, online services as long as there not live is fine. Cut the end off and tape up the aerial cable ends, get rid of TV recorders, Blu=ray players and console fine just remember NO broadcast TV channels be safe and remain legal.

Detector vans used to exist when terrestrial TV broadcasts were analogue. The guy that designed the original equipment in the vans has just died. It is no longer possible to 'detect' TV usage for terrestrial or satellite broadcasts. With the many methods of TV delivery the task becomes even harder. There is no longer an offence of 'available for use' so even if you have a satellite dish/TV antenna then there is no offence. The best advice is not to engage with the TV licensing reps who may call to see you. Do NOT under any circumstances sign anything that they ask you to. They will make out that it's just to record the visit to your house. They will fill in your 'confession' later!
BUT BUT BUT... I saw a clip of some men detecting a working TV 3 feet from the van and they claimed it was a live signal... :) It's sort of possible but far too costly to implement.
Its the BBC and the UK government which are the problem. They brought bbc under the pretense of stopping it going private but what they really brought it for is its ability to be a propaganda machine 40 million viewers plus. Cancelled my license years ago. Only ever use my 3 tvs, 5 monitors for netflix, prime, PlayStation, xbox switch.

Love the show good on you mate. Cancelled my license two weeks ago already getting my first letter. Apparently they have a problem with my direct debit. I don’t know how because I’m paid up until November when my next payment is due. They will have a problem with it then.
Why has no one ever sued them for false advertising? They push these detector vans, quite literally using them as a threat, and yet it's a blatant lie and they're never legally pulled up on it. Also, would it be possible to start a "class action" type suit for harassment? They automatically assume that you need a license and will bully you into buying one, their "we're giving you a few days to get correctly licensed" is a classic based on the assumption of guilt. The way they word their letters & the stuff on their website has been and still is in some cases misleading. Everything about the BBC is dodgy.

The licence fee is considered a tax which makes the BBC a part of the establishment, try to sue the establishment and you'll end up bankrupt and jobless. The best you can do is become legally licence free - your head will be subjected to less woke BS and your bank balance will be £170/year better off.
Contact a solicitor and inform them you want to sue for harassment. Also contact the police every time they send you a letter reporting harassment so there's evidence to use later along with saving all the letters they've sent you including copies of letters you've sent them via recorded delivery. Keep all post office receipts for recorded delivery.

You shouldn’t just stop paying. That gives them reason to chase you for non payment. Go to their website and cancel it officially. That way there will be no comeback. I did it online months ago and haven’t heard a thing. No letters, emails, calls….nothing 👍
We done ours a couple of years ago, declared it’s not required and cancelled payment. Had one letter confirming and it lasts for a couple of years where you declare again. Just repeat that process and you should be left alone
I have a licence. Elderly wife is both of a nervous disposition, and so addicted to that screen, I feel I have little choice but to pay the licence fee. If, god forbid, she goes first - that damn thing will be in a skip within 24 hours. Not long ago, I had a licence goon at my door. No record of a licence at this address. But I have one! Could he come in and inspect it? No he bl00dy well could NOT! Could I find it and show it to him? No answer by then but SLAM! That said, I've just received a demand to renew the licence. I've decided to find out how many reminders I can ignore. Not from some fine principle, but simply because, as an 80 yo pensioner, I currently don't HAVE it !
You should have a free licence if you're over 75 anyway. Contact them and they'll refund you. I sorted it out for my mum it's a bit of a ball ache because you have to show proof of age, birth certificate, confirmation of benefits award letters and all that stuff but it's worth doing to get your money back my mum got over £250 because they back dated it from when she turned 75

I was an aerial and satellite engineer. You cannot detect a household is watching TV from a van LMAO. If I could've done that I wouldn't have had to knock on people's door or climb their roof to troubleshoot faults. 1) You must plug a spectrum analyser onto a coaxial cable coming from the household's aerial (whether directly or through a headend/fiber conversion) then decode a multiplex to view it's channels on that frequency - from 470-790MHz. This is the only way to see a signal or live TV, and just seeing someone's incoming signal on a spectrum analyser wouldn't mean anything even if they could link onto your wall socket/cable, as it cannot tell what someone is doing with that signal, it cannot tell if a TV is on etc. You can unlpug a cable from an aerial and put your tongue on the center copper core and braid to tell if a TV is sending voltage up, or if a Sky receiver is on a high/low band, don't see the BBC doing this and wouldn't confirm anything. 2) You can try to get 'pick up' from a main or relay transmitter as the electromagnetic UHF signal ('freeview' signal) moves through the ionosphere, by holding a cable in the air. But it's not being channelled around an aerial's elements into a balun to be ready to be decoded by the tuner and error's removed by the FEC chip, it'll be raw 'pick up' that doesn't have MER (digital quality) or enough dBuv (power). But remember this isn't even a household's cable now - just raw signal. 3) You can point an aerial in a given direction to try getting a signal and you can use a similar method to detect 4G interreference, these have no bearing on a household's TV signal or what their TV is doing. 4) They could try pointing a parabolic ear (directional mic) at houses, though this won't be legal and it does not confirm anyone is watching anything live. 5) In summary, it is actually impossible to see what someone's TV is doing without line of sight, at most you can see if they have a working CAI certified signal or not by tapping onto their cable, and this means nothing as TV's will be blowing in raw signal near Crystal Palace transmitter, and signal isn't proof it is being watched or TV switched on. BBC protect pee dough files and put out far-left/neo-marxist propaganda. An increasingly dangerous organization indeed, I cancelled their propaganda fee years ago. I hope @ChilliJonCarne can pin this, to ease people's mind about this nonsense from the BBC.
Last century when TV sets and monitors were based on CRT it was possible not only to detect they were "on" but you could even read text that was being displayed on them from a distance. At the time the military were particularly worried about spies eaves dropping on secretaries typing on word processors because that had actually been demonstrated. Technology has changed a lot but I wouldnt be at all surprised if something similar could still be done today with LCD/LED displays. Displays are quite noisy. I got to test a few to ensure they complied with CE standards for unwanted emissions. Quite a few failed. On one occasion we were asked to test a display because its unwanted emissions were interfering with a child's pacemaker!

They parked up and demonstrated how they could read what someone was typing on a computer in a nearby office building. That was in the days of CRT monitors. This year (2024) several people have demonstrated doing something similar, but with high error rates, by intercepting EMI from HDMI cables several meters away. The latest article I saw used AI but they were still getting 30% error rates.

Are they seriously expecting us to believe, that a company who can't find out someone's correct name is that serious. Personally I just don't cooperate, they send me letters, I don't reply, they don't turn up. in the 80's, i had a good look inside a 'detector van' driving past. there were 11 aerials on top........ but nothing inside to back them up, nothing at all.
And for those not old enough to remember, way back , TV detector vans were a thing .. In the days of the old CRT (cathode ray tubes) they could detect if a tv was working in a property by the electro magnetic radiation it would give out. In fact I recall seeing a tomorrows world or similar which showed how sophisticated equipment could be used to show what was on a CRT computer screen- a useful thing for industrial espionage. Just remember - "I do not watch any BBC programming at any time, and i dont watch any other live transmissions"
Hi. This is a new one for me !! I have a one man, High Street photography shop in Sussex and just had a letter from Jackie Garswood, Customer Service manager at TV Licencing. "Are your customers or staff watching TV at this unlicensed property ?" So my customers are going to come in, sit down and watch the Olympics I suppose. No, it's a little camera shop with no TV or or visible computer. There was a self addressed envelope to reply but not postage paid. My address will now be passed on for investigation. I can't wait.
There is a TV detector van in the commercial vehicle museum in Leyland, near Preston. I asked the volunteer bloke, what the electronics stuff actually did. “Nothing”, was the answer. So, basically two people are employed to roam around in a van doing nothing productive of any sort. Sounds, kind of fun.

@@Isclachau They did when broadcasts were analogue. They weren't particularly accurate though and couldn't, with certainty, tell whether the TV was in which house of a pair of semis. Made more difficult by TVs being almost 'back to back' on either side of the party wall. The more 'modern' vans had 4 grid antennas phased to give a narrow receiving beamwidth. The equipment picked up the local oscillator frequency from the TV sets and since most TVs had the same IF then the channel being received could be worked out.
When Britain held the Olympics a few years ago, I watched the opening and closing ceremonies, but not the running, jumping and splashing about in between!

Im a television repair engineer of over 51 years Television detector vans did exist way back in the 70s so when you say they have never existed well your wrong they did but I totally agree with you that with the many ways that we now receive our television programs a detector van simply cant and wont work.
I find it hard to believe that they expect us to shake in our shoes at the threat of the "Detector Van" Back in the days of CRT TV's at a very close range you could detect the frequency of the local oscillator but not with todays digital tV's. If you connect via the internet your ISP could spill the beans, but i think this is very unlikely. As for watching the Olympics i am not interested and certainly not going to pay to watch it.

I worked in Currys years ago, if a customer bought a tv, you could push one of the 'F' keys at the till and it would not capture the address. We were told never to use it lol. The whole thing is a big con.
I was caught without a tv license and fined £480 by the court in early 1980s I didn’t want to end up like it again so paid it by direct debit.i stopped watching terrestrial tv since the early 1980s after that court experience. Thanks to you I cancelled my license debit from the bank and received a letter within 2 days advising me to make payments or risk legal action. I think the BBC should refund me every penny in license fees they have taken from me.

It's impossible to complete an online cancellation as they tell you to phone to cancel the TV licence. I waited 30 minutes before hanging up.I've cancelled my DD so I'll wait for my first threatening letter which may have a different phone number.

Used to be a postman ,when they used our office as a base when in the area ,they guarded them like fort Knox,nobody got near them ,the staff were ignored in the canteen and they would have been torched if left outside and not behind secure compound.

Not watched live TV for decades, it's all bollocks! Why would you pay for something you may not need? It's a bit like having a tin of something that you have never eaten, will never eat or even like? Just because? Genuinely, the BBC needs taking down.
I had the letter you mentioned then someone with no identification in a small average car turned up questioning me regarding why I stopped my licence paying couple of weeks ago. I want a refund with regards to the convicted and yet to be convicted criminals they employ.
RIGHT. Yes. It was possible to detect with old crt sets. As the cathode beam moved across the screen to trace the lines, it's intensity (brightness) was modulated by the vision signal. A high frequency oscillator was used to help in this process. So, if anyone came along with an old am radio and placed it close to the set, a high pitched whine would be heard, which varied in pitch according to how much brightness was in the displayed picture at any one time. We all did this as kids in the 60s, Now, the detector van, practically would have used a very highly sensitive amplifier to take advantage of the same principle. Thus, instead of just 3 ft away, it would be possible to detect the same interference from outside your house. Meanwhile in the van, their verification means would be nothing more than three tvs, one on itv, the others on bbc1 and bbc2. They compared the incoming signal with these three sets until they got a match, and bingo. Job done. So they did not detect the channel, they detected the display on the screen and did a comparison. This is simply just not possible with today's lcd flat panel sets, and in any case, hundreds of channels would make it impossible anyway. So that's your theory, but it was dodgey even back in the day. FEAR NOT, PEOPLE.
Even if I had a license I would not be watching after what I've seen on RU-vid of the opening well I'd say ceremony but I think there are some better words to describe it. Oh and I now have another quartet of the same letter.....Still waiting for their investigation to start.
