Warped Post - Replacing A Damaged Pressure Treated 6x6 Post

One of the pressure treated posts on the barn warped as it dried out over the past year and it needed to be replaced. I cut out the old post and installed a new pressure treated 6x6 post with a metal bracket on a concrete pad. I used a Tapcon screw to secure the bracket to the concrete. You probably think the video was edited, but I actually did get this to fit on the first try! (That never happens.)
This video is a bit of an experiment! I do dozens of little projects like this every year and people have been asking for more non-bee videos lately. Let me know if you would like to see more stuff like this.

WHY AM I WATCHING THIS ON THE VINOFARM CHANNEL?

 This video is an experiment. Please allow me to explain…

 First off… I’m not changing anything. There will always be beekeeping videos! The bees are not going anywhere. And I’m not turning into a DIY home improvement channel. And I’m not trying to bore you with long form construction videos. But I am thinking of adding more non-beekeeping content in addition to what already exists here. (There have been multiple requests for non-bee videos lately and I decided to try to add some.)

 I have 77,000 subscribers, but obviously not everyone watches every video. The reason for that is because I have people who subscribed for beekeeping, people who subscribed for bread baking, people who subscribed for barn videos, hoop house videos… etc. (and a few people who watch whatever I post!) I understand not everyone will watch everything and that’s totally cool. But I am interested in growing this channel and to do that, I need to post a larger variety of content than JUST beekeeping or JUST barn videos.

 The other problem I’ve gotten myself into is that video production takes SOOO much time and I’m just one guy with a family and a life. Making a barn episode takes about a week to edit. A bee video takes a couple days, not counting the filming. And when there’s not much going on with bees (like the entire month of May, and now into June) I just don’t have anything to post. The weather here has been very NOT summer-like and the bees are just chilling…

 Meanwhile, I’ve been crazy busy on a million little farm projects like this post replacement and not recording hardly any of it. So I decided to do an experiment. I filmed this entire thing with a GoPro in about 2 hours and edited it in about 2 hours and was able to upload it in less than a day. It’s less produced, more gently edited with fewer graphics and no music, but it still tells a story, is easy to watch and shares knowledge, which is what I try to do with every video I make. This kind of video is just WAY easier to shoot, produce and upload.

 So, yes, I’m still beekeeping and the bees are fine (just a bit behind) and I will have regular videos once things take off. And I’ll still be making full barn episodes once I get the next big part of the barn done. But in the mean time, I’d like to drop in little videos like this one amongst the regular content. I promise they will all tell a story and they will all pertain to our property and the projects we do around here. Feel free to skip over them if you want! I know they won’t all be interesting for everyone, but they may bring new viewers into the channel and they will enable me to keep a more regular posting schedule.

Please let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions! Thanks for your constant support!

I primarily joined for the bees, but I like you and your channel so I'll watch whatevers :) On a serious note, please please please always use eye protection on these projects!!!! Even if its just a little quick project, something could go horribly wrong very quickly and being blind in one eye would make everything a lot harder to do. Edit-(at the beginning of the video you didn't have anything covering your eyes, noted later you did, unsure if those are sunglasses or safety glasses)

I am a newly licensed GC and dreaded doing this to my back deck, which is level at 72 inches bottom of the deck boards, and the bottom of the joists are 66-67" from the ground. My post are only 4x4(3.5) on 12 Sonotube concrete tube pier footings with post brackets. One wasn't even bolted into the footing. My two posts supporting the grand staircase on the deck have warped, cracked, and are bowing, causing a 1.75-inch drop over 4 ft., Making the top of the staircase seem lower than the rest of the deck. This video made me feel more confident and eager in my ability to perform this repair for the first time with ease and less anxiety. I put it off one summer already, and my massive back deck is in need of repair and TLC. Fixing/Repairing this structural failure first will make me feel better about spending money to improve the aesthetics of my back deck.

You are such the intrepid DIYer. You have to be though if you don’t have money to throw around. I’m restoring a 1911 house to original and few people can work on them in the original way. The very few with experience are incredibly expensive. And then, of course, is the question of whether they can meet my quality standards. So now I can lath and plaster. I’ve run 1/3 mile 12/2 wire. Rebuilt 25/40 windows. Stripped miles of paint. Learned how to apply analine dye and shellac. The list goes on. 11 years in. I admire your can-do spirit and your breadth of task!

Even though I at first discovered your channel because one of your bee video was on my recommended list (at that time I was terrified of bees, now thinking about getting bees of my own, which is a bit harder than just getting a hive and bees and other beekeeping equipment, because of paperwork, since in Estonia, where I live, every beehive has to be registered, even if it's just one nuc as a hobby, not for honey production for human consumption). Keep up the good work and stay safe. By the way, your barn looks already very nice.

Reading the dopey mosquito breeding ground warnings were beyond amusing. As someone who’s been on the train since the early days I can tell you some of my favorite videos have been non-bee related...hoop house, sour dough, porcupines, basement concrete pour, etc. I definitely support this idea, especially when things are slow in bee land.

As a follower we watch all your videos.they are always engaging and informative ( and fun!). Having been a lumberman all my life I would have to think the warping came from the “heart center” in the post. Large industrial customers , mostly furniture manufacturers making poster beds, specified a grade we offered called “ Free of heart center”. Having said that... not all heart center timbers crook or bow, it seems very random but the ones that do will have the bullseye. It’s difficult to find FOHC in southern yellow pine because the logs are smaller than those of ponderosa or Douglas fir... in addition, the drying process has a lot to do with the crook and bow, timbers should be dried for a long time in steam kilns. We produced these for cross members on power poles, being straight was critical... perhaps this explains what happened. Keep up the great work, you have a real talent for communication.
@vinofarm

Every single SYP PT post I've ever seen has a heart. Maybe it's just our area. I've probably bought a couple dozen of these in my life and this is the first one to warp like that. And actually, this particular one was delivered on a truck with the building materials, so I didn't pick it myself. And I had framers frame the building, so I didn't watch that one get installed. It could have had a bit of a bend and they went and installed it anyway, not caring. They certainly didn't care about the base bracket! Thanks for the info!

Great work as always. You might consider wrapping post with a reveal on one side instead of mitering the joint, which on that length is going to be very hard. One side width of post, other side 1/2" wider giving a 1/4" reveal (or wider if it looks better to you). Much faster and easier.

Grade Stamp: SPIB = Southern Pine Inspection Bureau. Southern Yellow Pine warps and twists like no other wood. Especially after it seasons out and then gets wet again. @vinofarm
@vinofarm Год назад
This was done a few years ago so I don’t remember what that cost. I see 6x6x12’ PT posts are $51 at Home Depot right now. I wouldn’t bend and reuse a joist hanger but those tabs on a post base aren’t really structural so I felt comfortable reusing them. They were only 1 year old. The tabs really just keep the post from sliding sideways. They aren’t holding any weight.

I think that was just poor construction. That screw was sheared off when they installed it and they didn't bother to fix it. Because it’s a brand new barn and I haven’t even seen the finished product yet? If this was 100 years old and I just wanted to shore up a sagging post, just sistering something on as a hack might be OK. But I kind of care how this looks.

5:10 OW! You cut the tongue off?!? I hope you used an anesthetic! LOL! ~ 6:16 What are the dimensions/weight of that beam? ~ 9:00 What is the purpose of a tongue of a beam? ~12:57 AWESOME job, getting that beam in place! ~ 14:18 Do you think you should get a Hard Hat for moments like this? [You are doing an AWESOME job!} ~ I remember when I was a kid, watching some construction workers work with putting aluminum skirting on a cement pavement. I was just casually watching until I heard [POW!] I looked at where the sound came from, and one of the workers pulled a nail [or spike?] out, tapping it into place, and when he was near the end, he took a step back and hammered hard. [POW!] Could you tell me about this special nail [or spike?] with an explosive? ~

The new beam was very heavy because treated posts are wet when you get them. They dry out a lot over time. The tongue give the post an added physical connection to the cross beam. Without the tongue, the top beam would just sit on the post and you'd be relying on nails to hold it in place. The tongue keeps everything in place even if a nail or two fails. Google "ram set" to learn about those nail guns. Those are cool, but I have no need to own one. If you need to set a lot of nails in concrete, that's the way to go.

The real question here is, why NOT watch it on this channel.

God damn all nails, use screws.

Unless you buy the super duper expensive ones (GRK), screws are not structural. Nails are a code requirement.
