Quick'n'dirty (and cheap) way to select and convert a cheap donor guitar into a tenor guitar to re-create some Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds magic.
Guitars featured are a Squier Mini Jazzmaster, and a Washburn Hannah Montana "Secret Star" kids guitar. I didn't mention I also added copper foil shielding to the pickup cavities in the Hannah guitar. Not really necessary especially now the bridge pickup is actually a single coil sized humbucker, but it couldn't hurt, and was easily done while mucking around with everything else.
Sorry, I try to talk fast, and end up tripping over my tongue, 'cause I'm trying to keep it short, as our upload speed is so bad :-) Bridge Replacement on Hannah Montana Guitar was a Musiclily/Amazon job for about £10.00
Blade pickup is a Warman "Peacemaker Tele Warm Rail" (£20.00ish)

Wes Borland (who's a massive Nick Cave fan) has a 4 string guitar bass hybrid with a 26.5 scale length & is tuned to F#,F#, B,E. The gauges are .80 bass string, .42, .32, .22. It doesn't exist unless you build it yourself basically. I never realized until this video tho that Nick Cave played a 4 string

Three quarters of 25 1/2 is about 19 inches. A tenor guitar is usually about 22 to 23 inches. A baritone ukulele is about 20”. So when someone says three quarter scale, they really mean 7/8 scale.

Great video. Thanks for sharing. I was looking for an electric baritone uke a few years ago, when I bought a Fender Tenor Tele. Tuned DGBE it's pretty much a Baritone uke with a slightly longer scale length. Was looking to get another as a backup but they are extremely thin on the ground. Toyed with the idea of converting a small guitar. Might explore that idea again after watching this. 🙏

I think you can find a good selection of instruments with the brand Eastwood. Recently i've bought a tenorbaritone, i can say that the compromise price/ quality is ok . I have changed the strings with a lighter strings set, this " guitar" is very enjoyable. Regards , Patrick

That’s one way to do it. I did the same thing but I used a Squier Mustang that has a 24” scale. All I did was remove the two thickest strings and the associated saddles and tuners. I use Chicago tuning of DGBE so no other mods were necessary besides adjusting the truss rod for the reduced tension. Tenor guitar is under appreciated here in the US. Thanks for the great video 😊

You can tune it like a Violin/Mandolin but down an Octave w/ Clifford Essex Strings made for that Tuning & you've got a fun range

@@RockStarOscarStern634Clifford Essex strings? Never heard this brand . Where are made ? In U.K. ? I' m playing tenor guitar ( hand made , i could not find the Fender teletenor for left handed) , a Tenorbaritone by Eastwood and two irish style bouzoukis . All instruments are tuned A D G C, i wouldn't mind to discover new brands of strings, except the Tenor ,( use the La Bella set) for the other instruments i have to buy singles strings, due the particular tuning. Thank you so much if you can give me some informations about Clifford Essex. . My best regards, Patrick from Italy

@@patrickbuzzo1970 They're UK made & the Clifford Essex Flatwound Tenor Guitar strings are tuned GDAE which produces a nice Mellow Jazzy tone.

I started to convert a Hannah Montana years ago. Abandoned when a '60s Teiso showed up.

I did a similar conversion with a squier mini strat. I cut the neck down thinner like a tenor banjo on the bandsaw with a metal blade, without removing the frets. then filled the neck cavity at either side of the neck with mahogany. I put on better machine heads and pickups (seymour duncan ssl 1's] and made a bridge from brass and reused the saddles. I actually prefer it to the fender tenor tele

You went the whole hog ! I quite like the wide string spacing, as my fingers are big enough to feel a bit crowded playing open chords on a standard 6 string. One of these days I might actually buy a 7 string and convert it to 6 to see how that feels!
@diarmaidok

@@Willblacksmith I ended up slightly thinner than my thinnest banjo neck [a paramount a]. I bought another squier mini to convert to use humbuckers on, but it got shelved when we moved home.

Will Jones You actually did the same w/ a 3/4 Size Acoustic. John Pearse makes amazing GDAE Tuned Tenor Guitar strings & that Tuning can be used for Jazz cause it's a much mellower jazzy "Guitar" sound than CGDA.

A have a tenor guitar , A D G C tuning, the neck and the fretboard are much thinner , otherwise would be very hard to play . During the 90's i owned the Epiphone LP 100 , modified by an artisan to be played with 8 strings, but the neck and fretboard were kept with the same size like the original . The instrument was very hard to play ,after two years i gave it away . I think if you want to play like a tenor ( or like an octave mandoline) , the width at nut does not have to exceed 3,6 centimeters. Just my opinion . Best regards, Patrick from Italy

I know what you mean - the string spacings are not what one is used to....but I quite like it. My fingers are either getting fatter, or more likely clumsier, to the extent that on six string acoustic/electric I realise I'm often not playing open chords perfectly cleanly as I used to, as my fretting fingers partly muffle open strings - only really noticeable when recording, but I'm thinking sometime I'll pick up a 12 string and convert to six to give myself a little more room. Or I could just go work on my technique!

The Original bridge pickup was actually a Telecaster pickup.

10:11 It reminds me a bit of those Harmony Tenor Guitars because they use the outer 4 spaces.

You commented on using a shorter scale to accommodate the tuning, but then mention using GDAE tuning which works fine on a full scale length as it's essentially covering the same range as standard guitar tuning. Traditional tenor guitar tuning is CGDA (a fourth up) which you do need the shorter scale.

Tenor Guitar is basically a Tenor Banjo neck popped onto a Guitar Body.

The Mini Jazzmaster Scale Length (along w/ the Washburn Hannah Montana Tele) is 22.75 which is a bit shorter than 23 so it's a great candidate for a Tenor Guitar.

The Tuning is basically the same as a Violin/Mandolin but down an Octave. I use that Tuning for Jazz cause it's a much mellower sound that's appropriate for it.

I’m a baritone ukulele play turned acoustic tenor player in dgbe… looking to covert a squire telecaster into a long scale tenor until I can afford a proper electric tenor

I've been eyeing the MiniStrat for this but I want to make it a 5 string with a low F. Good news about the pickups, I thought I'd have to change them to blade.

I built a baritone tenor (C below low E) out of an Ibanez AX series, the 24.5 scale works great with some obsessive tweaking, which takes care of the issue I have with the Eastwood baritone tenor (26 inches is too long for about half of chord shapes for CGDA). Thank you for this video, I was wondering what would be a good candidate for a regular tenor that's easily attainable, I switched to playing in 5ths after a wrist injury, and at first it was because it gave me such easy access to power chords and a moveable minor shape, which is why I built a baritone first, but i've come to enjoy the uniqueness of the tenor guitar in general.

I also built a baritone tenor. 24.75” scale. It uses the middle 4 strings of a Les Paul. 10-46.
