In July 1940, 2 weeks after France surrender, British navy tries to capture and finally destroy the French Fleet in Mers El Kebir and Oran, fearing that the German seize it, killing 1277 french sailors in the figth. In the Summer and Automn 1940, The Free French support by the British tries to take over colonies in Africa. With succed in AEF ("Afrique Equatoriale Francaise", now Tchad, Centrafrique, Gabon and Congo) by failing at Dakar to rally AOF ("Afrique Occidentale Francaise," majority of modern West Africa). In 1941, to support the coup against the British in Irak, Germany "ask" Vichy to let his planes uses the airports in the French Lebanon and Syria. In reaction, British and Free French invade Lebanon and Syria. In January 1941, taking advantage of the weakness of France, Thailand attack Indochina after months of unofficial skimishes on the border. Thais succed on land but lost the majority of their fleet. Japan imposed an armistice and arbitrate in favour of Thailand, which gains territories at the thai-indochina border. In 1942 the British fear that Vichy let Japanese Submarines take rest and supply in French Madagascar, and threaten India. So they launch an invasion of the Island in may, the conquest end in november 1942. Finally in November 1942, when ally landing in North Africa face the Vichy Army was ordered to resist and fight back the anglo-american. After negociations, the French Army joined the Ally and the Free French and fight back against the german. The Vichy French army fight mostly defensively, against Free French and Ally which invade territories for preventive reason, or to rally them to the ally cause. Vichy doesn't fight in Europe or in offensive operation, even if few French volunteers to enlist in french-wermacht units which fight in the eastern front.
So the Japanese fought a Nazi puppet state (Vichy France)? Or was it that after the fall of France select French colonies were placed under Vichy French rule but isolated colonies could not be enforced with the treaties effects? If the second was true then wouldn't Indochina be considered Free French or a revolutionary colony? I doubt the French garrison in Indochina would accept the authority of Vichy France since they did not get touched because they were thousands of miles away from where the battle of France occurred. I'm not trying to be a harkov, I am just confused on this matter.
Some colonies chose to join the Free French, while others saw Vichy France as the legitimate government. Indochina was loyal to Vichy France. Honestly, I don't think Nazi Germany would have been upset over this invasion. If anything, it would just keep Vichy France occupied.

+GalacticPenguinTV You made it wrong. The japanese only occupied the northern part of Indochina at first. Then, it wasn't a real occupation, since Vichy France still administrate the territory until March 1945
Not before 1941 I belive. De facto it was more a kind of condomium until March 1945 when the Japanese killed the french leaders and created their puppet states
This viedo forgets about the war between Thailand and French Indochina from 1941-1942. The Japanese occupied Indochina briefly the last 6 month of WWII after the surrender of Germany. The Vichy government ruled Indochina during WWII in the name of Japanese government then.
French Indochina only had 3 000 soldiers against + 36 000 Japanese soldiers, just two battles can't proves that France always surrender. France had the most battles won in the world, you should learn history
Tommy boy, not only are the French frog eaters, but snail eaters as well. The reason France surrender to Japan was because they were to tired trying to invade them in the first place. No one can invade Japan, just like Germany tried to invade Great Britain, but failed afterwards. Japan, the Philippines, and the United Kingdom are both island countries, so no other country can invade them.
