It sits on a bend on the River Avon. The castle was built by William the Conqueror in 1068 within or adjacent to the Anglo-Saxon burh of Warwick. It was used as a fortification until the early 17th century, when Sir Fulke Greville converted it to a country house. It was owned by the Greville family, who became earls of Warwick in 1759, until 1978.

My mother, grandmother and I went to Warwick Castle in 1957. I was 9. A nice train ride from Erdington. It was a lovely, interesting tour. Not crowded. None of the commercialism spoken of in the comments. I have beautiful photos of the day. Wonderful memories.

Its good to see Warwick Castle again even in video only. Its the 1st castle I went into when my sister invited me for a visit in 2005 bcoz she lives in Birmingham. It made my childhood dream come true- of going/ being in an actual castle! And the memory will live on until i die i guess. How i wish i couls go back to England!

I thought it was nice. But then, I'm from North America. The castle was nicely decorated and the grounds were amazing. I appreciated the staging of the "family" in typical poses. As a tourist, I was impressed. Isn't that the point?

I was there in 1975 before the Tussaud takeover, when it was still owned by lord Brooke. They had an equestrian show with a very funny knight who treated the audience as peasants who should be grateful for the honour of watching him practise. Loved the site.

Thank You K.K. for providing this fine documentary. The whole presentation is exceptional. The history of this particular landmark is extraordinary and every inhabitant intriguing. I can imagine & picture York's Sir Richard Neville (kingmaker) and his family walking the grounds and planning out their schemes in the big hall during the wars of the Roses era.

I remember visiting the castle with our school. Ive heard its more theme park themed now instead of history lessons as it was when i went for the first time. I will always remember that vist and its where my thirst for knowledge about the war of the roses started. At least she is being preserved for future generation's.

We love castles so much that we decided to visit and film all 130 castles (and other things) in the care of CADW in one year. If you are wondering why, well, It seemed like a good idea at the time. And hopefully, it is. There are just so many beautiful castles here in Wales and it's well worth going to see as many as you can. Do it!

We've been there twice. The first time was in 1986, and more recently five years ago. My wife and I love it. They've added so much, I'm glad we took the time to go back to the castle since we were in that part of the country. We especially enjoyed the 'siege engine' demonstration, and the period actors they've employed here and there. The first time we had been there we were among the few, but this time the place was packed, probably because the owners have put in such an effort to bring the castle's history to life by adding the jousting, etc..

My partner booked tickets for us to go. We were really looking forward to it but when we got there it felt like such a money grab and just like a theme park. Him and I were really disappointed, you had to que for everything as it was all turned into a theme park attraction. There was a theatrical section about the plague and you learn absolutely nothing about the plague, you just get a bunch of people screaming at you... Something you definitely wouldn't have energy to do if you suffered from the plague. There was a man showing kids exactly how not to fight with an arming sword for £5. As if you hadn't already paid and extortionate amount for the tickets. The historical value of the castle had been almost completely destroyed and it just seemed like they cared more about making money than teaching the history of the castle. It was a fun day out but even the "fire joust" at night was ridiculous, it was barely a joust and when the 2 opponents started fighting they were doing stupid twirls and it looked utterly stupid. I think it needs to be handed to English Heritage, castles should not be sold to theme park creators.

Absolutely true! Warwick Castle has been 'ruined' by money! I've been on several occasions but every time I visit I feel disappointed that I somehow didn't actually 'see it'... or at least how I wanted to! It's because of all the crowds that it draws and, as you say, the relentless queuing that even prevents or dissuades one from visiting certain parts of the castle. Your description of it as being a theme park is quite apt, I think. For me now, if I want to really take in a 'castle' as one expects one to be, and I always take my daughters too, I much prefer to visit the great 'ruined' castles, such as Kennilworth and Ludlow. These NEVER disappoint either me or my girls and are a fraction of the cost of Warwick... and even free, if I recall, in case of the 'Three Castles' of White, Skenfrith and Grosmont on the Welsh border! 😊

Castles certainly had a theme park feel to them at times back in the day as well.At times they would be bustling with entertainers and visitors. Admittedly, that was not an everyday or week type of thing but when it wasn't a festival like holiday it was more like a compound with lots of hired help.

We went into the Merlin Tower, the Chapel, the bedrooms, & many others, a fun day out & would do it again. The Bear Pit has now been opened. ----- Plus now there's Glamping -------- :) The Staff were helpful, entertaining, funny & polite, any questions answered. :)

@mittfh
@mittfh 8 лет назад
For a time, it was owned by the Tussauds Group, which owned Madame Tussauds, the London Eye, Chessington World of Adventures, Alton Towers, Thorpe Park, Warwick Castle and Heide Park. However, in 2007 the Tussauds Group were bought by Merlin Entertainments, who now also run the Legoland theme parks, Sea Life Aquariums and Dungeons attractions among others. However, to make matters more confusing, the freehold of many of the attractions (including Warwick) have been sold to an investment firm (Prestbury) and are leased back.

Running a castle like that doesn't come cheap and without the investment it's quite possible it would have become a ruin in not so many years.

I'm puzzled. I always thought that the reason Brits drive on the left side of the road was because of the need to keep an enemy on your right side, (in a historical context). This would mean that lance and sword defenses would also be more direct in attack. I noticed that typical medieval movies made by Americans generally placed armed combatants on the opposite side, blunting their effectiveness. Here, clearly in a British setting, we see the same American style of jousting. What gives? Is it "safer" to joust in a less direct fashion? Why don't they approach in a more direct fashion, placing the attacker directly beyond the lance?

When I saw the outside I thought I would love to see this place but then I saw the inside that just makes it look like 2 time periods has collided. I think the inside should reflect the outside. How many such old castle still exist so when finally there is one I would love to have known what it looked like in the beginning of it's time. There is plenty to see of more modern times like the Victorian era so to me that is boring boring boring. Sorry but that is how I feel. My family have tried to claim the castle back for years but because the Prince spelled his surname wrong we can't get it back.

Edward the Black prince, he never had any entitlement to it in battle so that's why you never claimed my castle, me on the other hand descended from George Duke of Clarence and Edward 17th Earl of Warwick, Or.. maybe Edward V as they say, has every right to the keep, and Sudeley castle but it depends who had it last before the Merlin foundation got their magic in the way of things, so everyone's hanging by the thread for this fort unfortunately xD " He was a prince and he was black " xDDDD

Warwicks Boy 2016 the document he signed was to give the castle to someone else. By any chance was his surname woods Because my grandads surname is woods and the prince was my grandads great great great great grandad or something like that.

Warwicks Boy 2016 my nan didn't remember the castle name but I searched on the internet and it could have been Wallingford castle and his surname may have been Woodstock but now shortened to woods like my surname is Slattery which used to be o'slagraigh which became slakra which became Slattery but if in Warwick it says Edward The Black Prince it was probably Warwick.

In 1335, the castlewas granted to the Black Prince, and it was his principal residence, when he was in the country that is. His wife, Joan the Fair Maid of Kent, died of a broken heart at Wallingford, when her son, Richard II, condemned his half-brother, John Holland, to death for the accidental murder of a court favourite. In the end the unfortunate Holland was given a reprieve, but it was too late for poor Joan. Her will was written at Wallingford and she may have been buried in the Priory, though most sources are clear that her body was taken to Stamford (Lincs) to be buried alongside her first husband. In 1381, Richard of Wallingford, the castle's constable, was one of Wat Tyler's deputies during the Peasants' Revolt. Though the rebellion as a whole was not that popular in Berkshire.

originaalised, I read that the Black Prince derived his name from black armour that he wore, not that he was black.

In brief, a great castle turned into a Disney like theme park. Won't be visiting that castle. Go to Ludlow or Pembroke, or Hever, Walmer, Conwy, or...any castle which is open to visitors because it's a castle and not because it has candy floss and money grabbing attractions.

all the castles here just remind me of another invader's boot on our necks ever since William got here and the many who came before him...
