omg I can relate to you so much with what you said at the end!! I feel exactly the same way about this curse. I may be studying biomedical sciences at Warwick next term so this was SO helpful, thanks so much!!
hello! I'm joining in the life sciences from this year, and I still haven't decided whether to go to biological sciences or biomedical. Is it possible to change courses in the first year within the life sciences? Loved your video!
Hi there! Yes it is possible, and I know there is tons of support on the process because a lot of students make the switch. Although it is recommended to do it near the start of first year, you will be able to!
You are given lab manuals to work through all of the labs, plus in the sessions there are post graduate lab techs and assistants who are there to help you if you’re stuck. They teach you as you go, so you’re not just thrown into the deep end from the start! It does get gradually more independent as you start to build up skills in the labs, but you still get the manuals and help :)
For Biomed, we actually only got 2 essays throughout the Year, one over the Christmas holiday and one over Easter. The majority of Coursework was Lab Reports, as well as two quantitative skills assignments. Normally, we should've had essay questions in our Exams in Term three, but I didn't get to experience this due to Covid-19. The essays are different from English ones in a couple of ways: 1. They don't follow a defined strict structure - no more PEEL 2. It's sounds more like a research paper to be honest. You need tables, diagrams and evidence to back up what you are saying. A lot of the information that you relay in your essay will be based on data from actual scientific research papers. 3. You kinda just get into it, information based. It's factual, so you want to avoid lots of fluffy words to fill in space. Add more facts. As far as past papers, I don't thing I ever saw one. I'm pretty sure you can find them online, and if not, then asking lectures would work. I can ask about this if you'd like :) Hope this helps!
I'm happy to help! So I asked one of my lecturers, and here is what he said: Yes we do get past papers, they are available on the Warwick student portal (Moodle) Where all of the modules are. This includes, the lectures for each module, lecture captures, assessment information, and Past Papers. We are only given past papers for the last 2 years, but this is because the syllabus changes constantly, so using past papers from 5 or ten years ago is wildly inaccurate, and causes more stress than help. Let me know if you have any other questions :)
