Her character can be mean to people and untrusting due to her life on the streets and poveryt. But that needs to be balanced out with moments of vulnerability. Her being awful to her companion the entire time was one of the hugest mistakes in her character. They could keep the quippy banter without making it mean, and give it more spirit. Cuff was perfect to be a character for her to confide in. She could be mean, to the people of the world and then have her talking to cuff about her insecurities. That she feels bad for acting like an asshole, that she doesn't mean it and its how she tries to protect herself. She actually does wish that she could help, but she barely knows how to help herself and everytime she tries it just makes things worse. Which would give room for cuff to build trust with the player and character and have tender or confident moments of support. Which would make the betrayal more impactful. People could have loved this game even with its shallow gameplay and basic predictable story if they just understood how to write a compelling relationship and dialogue between the two core characters.
She was mean because its a reflection of the need to degrade the male persona while “empowering” the female persona. We all know what this really is. Its going on all over the gaming space now.

I played and it was ok and that’s just the parkour. Everything else was lame. The combat bland and boring. The abilties were tamed tho I liked some. Repetitiveness. Boss fights was ok. Characters was trash. Story was trash. Pandering and agenda pushing like crazy. The plot sucked. And it was made by an evil corporation called sweet baby so yea the game deserve all the hate. Gotham knights gameplay and cosmetics are fine. Even the characters look ok and I’m surprise they gave Batwoman cake but other than that game is repetitive and can get boring. Nothing much to do with it. Same for anything else they pretty much had a huge hand in like suicide squad and saints row

all through this video I was racking my brain trying to remember, cuz this whole premise is *super* familiar to an old PS2 game. The whole "modern, rough-around-the-edges girl gets stuck in a secret other fantasy world", to the " very chatty back and forth with a companion who isn't entirely what they seem" bit, and the "girl is actually from the fantasy world originally" twist towards the mid/end point. It's called Primal, and is definitely worth a look if you want something that actually executed those things actually decently. now I'm not saying they ripped Primal off, per se, but it really feels like a lot of similar ideas just with worse execution.
So she tells people she doesn't care if they perish, only to tell them they can rebuild and have peace later on? I'm surprised the villagers were so cool about it.
Forespoken was “bad”, it’s just so uninteresting it’s boring. It feels a game that nobody involved really wanted to make. It’s very “we will save our best stuff for the next game” . As for recommendations try “Back in 1995”. It’s an odd old school survival horror game created by someone who seems to dislike old school survival horror and trying to prove they suck (it’s like 5 bucks)

Was there really nobody on the writing team that ever read an Isekai before? The Isekai story structure is perfect for video games, it's no coincidence so many isekai stories take place in videogame worlds. I just don't understand why Frey is so determined to go back to Earth, there's nothing for her there, the game had to give us a reason why she'd stay set on going back instead of trying to join this society that warms up to her, sure I guess because she's already prone to distrust and because of the type of welcome they gave her I understand why she 'd be resistant to the idea AT FIRST, I thought her attitude was a byproduct of growing up having to look after herself with so many hostile people around her and that she'd change her way of being when the people of Athia started accepting her but no, one mistake and instead of trying to salvage what she was able to build in this new world she decides to throw it all away in favor of going back to New York, and for what? All for what? I know Athia is not exactly paradise, what with the monsters running around everywhere, but neither is New york, at least in athia she has the ability to fight back without risk of going to jail. Why is leaving Athia, the place where most of the game happens, the objective of this whole game? And you know what? There was an easy fix for this problem, just give us a good reason why she wants to go back to New York. How about Frey was gonna buy food for her cat, the last thing she had to do before leaving New York, and then the bracelet appears close to her and she goes to pick it up out of curiosity and gets teleported, so now Homer is back on her apartment waiting for her without food (cause she didn't leave Homer with the judge in this timeline), I would 100% get behind a protagonist trying to escape a fantasy world becuase she's worried for her cat.
why they thought it was a good idea to make the main character an asshole, I will never understand. It's the one thing that seriously turns me off from the whole thing. I can be ok with standard/unoriginal gameplay if the story is decent. The fact that they couldn't land that just makes the whole thing a hard pass for me. A shame too, so much wasted potential.
I had already heard that Forspoken's writing was bad, but I only knew the "I moved shit with my mind" line until now. I had no idea that it was this poor. Great video by the way.
I think the basis of the story was to appeal to struggling, inner-city, black kids and what they would do if they were isekai'd into a fantasy scenario and given the opportunity to be something...for lack of a better word...great. I guess that's why that scene about the little girl was so important because Frey saw herself in the girl superficially and why she curses a lot and is seemingly blunt about everything. I've never played the game, but I'd imagine anyone can write something better than this. That and the gameplay feel so superficial. Like, it was a last resort before going bankrupt.
It feel like the story wanted to an isekai, but being a deconstruction of it too. Like, we have character with shitty life who find itself in another world and they are special with awesome power. But it also wanted to do some twists on it, by having the character not caring about this world since they are a selfish and feel not attachment. It can't be both at the same time. Plus, thank you for not having mention ''wokeness'' and jsut focus on what the game does badly. I feel those anti-woke channel talk more about this game than Square or the developper ever did.
you know who has constant witty banter and is actually good? Sam & Max, or Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, Nier R, so many examples yet they ended up with an annoying asshole and the definition of bland. Also, i initially thought your channel was Mohg lol.
This just seems like a bundle of mediocrity dragged down by the anchor that is Frey. Honestly I feel like that if it wasn't for quippiness fatigue, you know when the main character barely seems to give a shit about the life threatening situation they're in and just treat their adventure as if they're watching a movie, this game wouldn't be as hated as it is. Just another mediocre release with a anoying protagonist.
The dialogue was hideous, as if written by a high schooler. The gameplay: repetitive . The environment: boring. The NPCs are so cringe, I can't remember how many times I rolled my eyes while playing, now I can actually see the front of my brain. I finished it but I'd say it was totally forgettable. Only time I remember that game was today, when for some reason, YT recommended me this video.
Randomly found this video recommended and you put into words exactly how i felt about the game! After the first hour i had to drop it, the writing really was that awful, i genuinely thought people were exaggerating at first but that pseudo failed attempt at trying to mimic the MCU's writing really fell short, the gameplay wasn't that bad but Frey truly was insufferable.. :/ Regardless, mini rant aside lol, stellar video and points alike - keep up the amazing work!
The one and ONLY good thing in Forspoken is the combination of the magic and parkour gameplay system. Even then, you can tell it wasn't fully fleshed out. Forspoken was actually meant to be a FF spinoff game called Agnis Philosophy. The nain character in that trailer was supposed to be Frey, but thanks to Sqiare Enix hiring that worthless consulting group Black Girl Gamers, her race was changed for DEI/ESG money and pandering reasons. Worst part is Square didn't even need to hire that consulting group when they already had Amy Hennig working on the game, the same Amy Hennig who worked on the Legacy of Kain series and the story for Uncharted games with Nathan Drake. If you hate the main character and story in Forspoken, you have Black Girl Gamers and former Square Enix ceo who kept bragging about making all of their games into games as a service blockchain and NFT infested mess to thank for that. Forspoken is a prime example of why you never hire 3rd party consulting groups run by protesters or individuals who put care more about pushing their ideologies over good story structure into games while self inserting their own personal issues into a product, you will end up like the now defunct Luminous Productions, which is exactly where Rocksteady games and the rest of Warner Bros are headed to next.
So.. its game.. they wanted it to be moving, but didn't do any of the work to make it a good compelling story. THere are pieces of bones that might work.
(before watching the video) Stand alone, the gameplay had potential and the story was mostly fine. But if you, like me, have read The greatest Estate Developer. And/or ever played/watched either or both Drakengard 3 and the Nier Gestalt/Replicant. Then you have experience a better version of the story. As well as a better version of the interactions between a sassy foul mouth woman, and a snoby inanimate object with a british accent with Kaine and Weiss in NieR Gestalt/Replicant. In a story where the main character, a foul mouth sassy woman, has to fight and kill four to five leaders that she has SOME relationship with. Who is slowly being corrupted by some entity with the aid of a dragon with Drakengard 3.
I think the developers denied it, but the 'Agni's Philosophy' tech demo looked much better and should have been made instead of Forspoken. The world in that trailer looks cooler than what's in Athia. Making the game open world was also a mistake since it makes it easy to camp out enemies that are not too aggressive and do not have many ranged attacks to fight you with.
It would have been a way better game if the game kept it’s plot about a Homeless girl surviving the streets by stealing and ends up joining a Gang or helps other Homeless survive.

I was kinda confused when I first heard the reviews. Tried the demo, liked the gameplay and hated the dialogue/cutscenes. Slowly, the gameplay just got so grating and boring. I felt the combat controls were just... Lacking. Traversal is the only good thing it turns out to have had imo
The biggest shame of this game is that it bears name of Amy Hennig, with unrealized potential of her writing(she worked on concept kinda iirc?), this woman is genius writer who gave us Kain and Raziel, she should be praise as not just female, but one of the best writers, but she is forgotten and her legacy is tarnished by this...creation. Such a shame. When people ask "where are females in game dev" I point out on Amy and how she was pushed aside when she was on a peak, pushed by people now pretending to be on "good" side.

I avoided spoilers because I might get this (at 10~15$) but my goodness, why on earth did they think a mean-spirited character is "lovable" and "relatable" I did played the demo and had a blast with the parkour (combat was ok) but yea, thats it. The world was very empty and the houses were literal assets placed to littered the barren land and the defend the fort minigame was horrendous. I mean why am I doing this? These people are already dead??
Yes, it was as bad I put 11 hours into it to finish it and by god do I wish I had that time back Awful performance (abysmal, even on a 3080Ti that I had at the time it struggled to maintain 60FPS) Awful visual aesthetic (everything looked either extremely bland or way too overdetailed so it looked like a chaotic mess, and the skyboxes were genuinely awful to look at) Awful script... (there's literally a section at the end where you are getting over an hour of exposition) Awful performances, nothing against the main character as a person irl but man is she bland in the game Awful characterization... nothing better than your protagonist that's "down on her luck" yet is fit, gorgeous, gets a slap on the hand at most for continuously doing crime AND on top of that has a bag full of money, which she doesn't decide to take with her when her house is on fire despite the thing laying DIRECTLY AT HER FEET. Genuinely just baffling through and through the entire game Awful gameplay. People have lauded the gameplay but I wonder if they actually played it. It's literally RSI inducing continuously spam the same button over and over to win, choose the right element to do more damage (which is not fun against some of the later boss fights, especially that flying one, FUCK that flying one). Enemies are just bullet sponges and all the gameplay is is to look flashy without any substance Even the parkour is just flashy without substance because all you do is hold run and that's it. Mirror's Edge isn't perfect but at least in terms of parkour you had to actually... you know... PARKOUR by using the environment instead of just running and having Frey do front flips and backflips while moving
This is definitely one of my biggest guilty pleasures. I know it's terrible but I love the actual gameplay once you unlock a few new abilities. While grinding to get the plat on playstation I never got bored swapping between the abilities. I agree it does take way too long to get the other powers.
If you're looking for more bad games, I have a copy of the Saint's Row reboot for PC I apparently inherited from the Humble Store, which I have no intention of claiming because I don't even like the original games.
Yeah when i saw the trailer i wasn't interested and i don't have a Ps5 all i have is the switch which is a gift and a curse, but hey at least the switch has ni no kuni: the warth of the white witch, good bye sleep paralysis demons and hello studio Gibli. Before my thoughts are swayed, I thought the game was "ok". Most of the stuff people complained about, weren't my biggest issues. My biggest issues was 1. Her leaving the money in the burning building while looking for her cat instead of taking it, it was RIGHT there. 2. None of the people in the world seemed that nice...? like I dont know why Id help them. And it seemed SO empty outside of the main place it didnt even feel worth it to save the world. Like I think it would have been better if there was multiple villages / cities on their last leg instead of one with like...50 people? 3.The power progression and unlock was shit. I liked the powers once you have them all. But you spend WAY too much time with only earth. You should be able to pick the order you unlock them. And by the time you get to the end, you cant unlock all the powers AND have the cuff until you beat the game? I thought that was so weird that the last power locks you into this "endgame" mode where you have to finish the game. It was the worst power progression of almost any game Ive played. Anyway, now time to see what Moog thought lol
It was dead asf. No towns, barely any people, I didn’t quite understand the bosses intentions. I just have to defeat them to go home… nothing makes sense. The main character is annoying asf I put her in Japanese VO. Made it somewhat better. You got a lot of things that had no meaning behind them. Cats just hangout at your crib after you find them. The game itself seemed unfinished. This game needs a remake or just bury it 6ft under. Replace the MC with a Japanese women character. The nails “equipment” was kind of innovative I think

Yeah, if your game is a narrative driven single player experience, and your MC is a boring jerk... Yikes. I recall some indie game had the same issue. MC was this millennial type jerk in a plaid shirt... and people just found him unlikeable. But this kind of blunder shouldn't happen to a big publisher. Who convinced the boomers at Square Enix that this is what the "western audience" wants?
"UnEpic" had a similar concept (quippy gamer nerd in a fantasy world), that game seems to have decent reviews though so maybe not the one you're thinking of?
I actually didnt have a big issue with her character. I havent played it since its release over a year ago. But I remember thinking "for the most part, this tracks" considering her background and scenario. And the part when she tells her the world to basically fck off. I remember thinking I didnt care much about the world either and didnt care, she was right to call them out. Id prefer how they have her than the complete opposite of her just deciding to be a hero bc of pure altruism. (i can still see why people wouldnt like following such a negative protagonist, just saying imo it made sense and didnt bother me)
I thought maybe, the game was getting a bad review because the non-standard main character and that people were just picking at every little thing. So I bought it. And it was so hard to be motivated to play. I really didn't like that your main power is throwing rocks. ROCKS! Also, yeah Frey is a petulant hostile person and very unlikable. I think I managed around 8 hours total and then uninstalled it.
Obviously people are being rasher than necessary with it because it's by the people who made Final Fantasy, if it wasn't attached to Square Enix I think people would be more understanding but as it stands it feels like Squeenix just wasted our time.
This game's narrative makes me eyeroll at Mach 50. I mourn for all of the better games that couldn't be greenlit while Forspoken did. Who keeps poisoning the waters like this?
Here's the thing. Just watching that first clip? I thought that dialogue was good. Which worries me, right? I'd have tweaked it a bit, but someone from our world using magic while speaking to an otherworldly voice? That's how i would go about it. I gotta rethink my life.
Nah youre ok I honestly didnt have an issue with the dialogue when I played the game. And tbh when she played the clip of Nier, it felt the same about those interactions as Forspoken. They were fine lol, youre not alone in thinking the dialogue was fine. (It also helps the voice actress' is good.)
@@lucaleone4331 I also felt the same about the Nier clip as the Forspoken ones but for the opposite reason; I thought they were both terrible. I agree that the voice acting is actually pretty good, but not good enough to redeem such bad writing. I think, though, that the true source of the dialogue's terrible-ness (in both games) is the editing; it's SO stilted and robotic. Truly the uncanny valley of audio.
Actually liked the gameplay. Switching magic types to make combos and using the movement, but sadly that was kinda pointless because every enemy was so easy that it was unnecessary to actually engage with the combat's deeper mechanics. Also despite having fun traversal there was no need to actually run around the world because there was nothing to do so you just end up fast traveling. The Demo was the best part of the game because there was no story or forced walking and stealth segments, and you had all the spells.
This game is hot garbage, but you can still have a little bit of fun with it. It's like the developers took a poll of all of the things gamers hate, and put every single one of the responses into one game.
I wish Forspoken did better. The story needed work, BUT the gameplay was SO much fun. I spent hours playing this game. The concept was so cool and the magic system made me feel SO powerful.
Ironically Drakengard 3 has nearly the same basic concept as Forspoken. Forspoken feels like a bad fanfic of what if Kaine and Weiss From NieR was in Drakengard 3. But not as well written.

It really just seems like everyone wants to be the in crowd and hate on this game because its the cool thing. I had fun with it start to finish, just like playing Final Fantasy 15 with a different theme.
That's cool! I've been wanting to give ff15 a shot at some point. I went into Forspoken honestly thinking it would end up being okay, but it wasn't for me. I'm glad some people were able to enjoy it though and I do agree some people hate on it just because everyone does.
