Imagine thinking this monster slaying science laden series was marketed for children. How the fuck was any of this hard to follow? It was literally Steins;Gate meets Godzilla. Edit: we fucking get it; you don't like them explaining plot. Keep dwelling on that as your main complaint and just do not ever watch another non-shonen anime again because that's exactly what you're going to get, you whiny shit.

I feel like I’m one of the few who real enjoyed the story of the show. That’s not to say that I’m done kind of science genius, but that I came away with a solid interpretation as to why the scientific concepts are so complex. Essentially, the characters are trying to apply human science to something that is clearly mythological in nature. Every equation and calculation the characters make results in paradoxes, dead ends, or infinitely expanding catastrophes. Why? Because human logic can only go so far when it is dealing with something clearly above them. The overlap/clash of science and myth can even be seen in the first five minutes of the show. When Mei is explaining the artwork depicting a whale-like Godzilla surrounded by Tengu-like Rodan, a passerby asks if she majors in literature, despite the fact that she’s a scientist. Ashihara is another example, a man who devoutly studied the sciences yet has volume upon volume of mythological texts

@FlyingFocs

I would have, but I feel the science aspect is so overwhelming it affects it affects the tension and characters. When people are largely just sitting around and talking about hardcore science when the world around them is being swarmed by Rodans (who, honestly, I feel like are treated as a non-issue since they don't interact with anything until plot), it makes it feel like there's no real urgency. Yun is a bit mire proactive, but by God, was Mei's portion bad about this (sidenote, I feel bad for the guy who had to animate those text scenes). Also, I know Godzilla gets flack for having characters who aren't that interesting... This series takes it to an all time low. When everyone feels like a walking exposition machine, and the old man character feels out of place for not doing that, and BB and his daughter were the two I actually liked for having a relationship... I'm sorry, thats a huge flaw. Godzilla characters are rarely great, but they can at least be fun and memorable. Most memorable thing about Mei IMO is she looks like Velma. Idk, it feels like the show tried so hard to be smart, that it sort of neglected everything else. But that's just my take. Also, if the anime trilogy is actually worse than this show... I almost want to watch it to find out how.

Agree with everything that was said here. Nice visuals, no real annoying/bad characters, fun monster designs, strong voice acting...but while the core story has potential, it's bogged down by so much techobabble, it's infuriating to actually sit down and watch. Nothing really happens for 85% of the show. You'll get 30 seconds of a monster, then 2 episodes of exposition and "DIAGONAL ORTHANGONIZER" being uttered every other sentence. Imagine the frustration of watching a supercut of JUST the dialog scenes from Godzilla 2014, and the constant cutaways from monsters, but stretched out over 13 episodes and 7 hours. That's Singular Point. I wish Toho would stop wasting time and money on these projects, and get back to films. Shin Godzilla took this almost exact same concept, but was better paced and more satisfying in every possible way.

The original movie had a human centric plot and progression anyway. I can get why people dont like it though, since Godzilla does kind of get sidelined a lot of the time as a result. That was a pretty big complaint about the 2014 reboot. Too much time with characters that weren't very compelling. Basically talking setpieces. It was done well with Shin Godzilla, I think. He got a good bit of screen time but it felt a little more I guess balanced when I watched it. Now if only the movie wasnt quite so... campy at times. Some of the human characters too. It's not a bad idea to mix in some elements from the Showa era films here and there, but it threw some of the movie off for me. Left a bad impression I guess. Not touching the anime trilogy. Don't hate it, just don't have many thoughts on it.

Same here! Even though I'm not that smart I was able to understand what they were talking about and put two and two together. It's better than it being dumbed down and kiddy like. I loved that part about it the most. Even though Godzilla wasn't necessarily in it fighting as much as people wanted, he still managed to be the center of the plot but in a more deeper level and the humans had to figure out how and why. If it were just Godzilla fighting a bunch of monsters and people throughout the entire show, it would have been super generic and less unique or different from any other Godzilla movie/show.

To anyone who was expecting a casual Godzilla, I suppose this was quite underwhelming? But, I certainly don't believe SP goes along with the usual themes, but uses the setting and explores an entirely different universe, and great set of possibilities. If Shin portrayed the grim nature of evolution, this one certainly went ahead and explored the scientific, and mythological themes quite well. Though, the pacing was all over the place, no theories were solidly established till the last few episodes, runs mostly on exposition dump and theories, I honestly believe this show could've used more episodes to do all the things right. As for me, I fall on the latter category as I really enjoyed the story, the characters, and the action scenes. Despite the plot being very confusing and convoluted, I was very much hooked, in fact it was actually the science that made enjoy the series, the mystery of the Archetypes and how it was connected to the Red Dust and Kaijus really made me think. The characters were very likeable and enjoyable, I even rooted for them at the end of the series and felt bad when something happened to them. Despite not having a lot of screentime, I really felt Godzilla's presence ever since he showed up, "a being from another plain of existance that can supposedly bend time and space and cause a catastrophe that can not only affect our planet but our entire universe." very much cosmic horror. A prominent inspiration for the show is the Bhagavad Gita "the song of God" (hence the repeating lullaby) which among many things is a story about how time is equivalent to disaster (the whole time loop and time travel shenanigans tied to the "catastrophe"). It's not so subtely referenced when Mei presents the professor's notes on the catastrophe before the board of Shiva and the Dog AI analyzes Godzilla's specific singular point which then reads as the Gita's most famous line "I am become death, destroyer of worlds", a double entendre that is meant to reference what Oppenheimer said after witnessing the Atom bomb for the first time (aka Godzilla's whole reason for existing) AND ties in to the whole archetype temporal instability plot because within the Bhagavad Gita "death" is more often interpreted as time. The Gita's prominent point of how various personalities and paths are indifferent as they all lead to the same ending is also exemplified by Jet Jaguar/the dog AI and the whole "I was the answer all along" ending. The very good and well researched writing alone makes me unable to dismiss the show, not even taking into account the awesome Godzilla design

Same for me. Even though the dialogue was a bit overabundant at times and the human characters weren't very multidimensional - which is okay, SP being very story-driven -, the series was still intriguing and I never felt bored. To me there are two elements which any good Godzilla story should check: pseudoscience - which might be based on real life scientific concepts/speculation, such as entropy, eternalism, cyclicality in time or higher dimensions etc. - and the mythological/philosophical, "divine" aspect, which gives cosmic, almost religious, moral significance to the secular, scientific content. When these two overlap and intertwine with one another, this defines proper Godzilla for me - not simply epic destruction or kaiju-fights. Since SP covered all this, I can overlook it's shortcomings and see it as a good addition to the franchise.

Personally I think the lack of monsters made the series better. I was eager for them to show up, and I wasn’t disappointed when they did. I also loved the more scientific aspect of things, because it shows the characters are really thinking about the monsters and their situation rather than running blindly into battle. I understand if people like monsters, action and loud noises. But I think it’s also important to not just have the characters trying to “shooty shooty boom boom” the monsters. They wanted to study them, understand them. And yes, when it came down to it, they had to kill Godzilla but they still studied and learned. This is by far, one of my favorite animes! “You’re not supposed to feel bored, and like you’re doing work.” Some people actually enjoy being able to think while watching a series. Honestly, this anime is not what I expected at all. I feel like they played on a ton of human character tropes present in almost all other Godzilla media- the human scientists that spout science babble all the time. Seriously, they kept talking about quantum physics and hard to follow word salad that I'm not even sure is accurate in reality because I'm the average viewer not a nuclear physicist I feel like they try a bit too hard to explain the habits and abilities of the monsters, saying that Anguiris can "predict the trajectory of a bullet before its fired so it must be able to see the future." No its an animal that sensed danger so it used a defense mechanism, simple as that. Plus I feel like that while Godzilla was on screen far less, it did make quite the presence when *on* screen even if they misused it in my opinion- having Godzilla stand around almost immobile for many shots. As far as characters, the old man was probably the most memorable since he's such a meme but everyone else sort of blended together because they were all too smart if that makes sense. Seriously, *everyone* had some degree of knowledge to put on the table, save for that goth chick we see for two episodes

I watched the series recently and really liked it, and to be honest I find it sad that the show is getting bashed so much for NOT being pure monkey hits lizard action. If this show wasn't under the whole godzilla umbrella it would probably be at least a bit more positively appreciated. I think a lot of the flair comes from the lack of epic monster action and more of a worldwide catastrophe, with news broadcasts and scientists debating and travel and economy collapsing rather than isolating the god damn titanic death lizard as a one city thing. Plus the whole point of the science exposition is that godzilla literally isn't scientifically possible, and requires transdimensional crap. Of course this is all individual tastes and everyone can like and dislike whatever they want, but even the fact he ended the review with "its godzilla after all" just highlights the fact that people are looking at this under "godzilla movie standards" rather than as it's own thing. Its not about monster action, it is about the science mystery, and dumbing it down to "red mist bad make monsters" would have literally removed the entire series and turned it into a monster fight slideshow. Definitely not a Godzilla show, which is why i hate it that everyone deems it one before criticising.

I only made it 4 episodes in, so take these musings with a grain of salt. There was far too much exposition. The story didn't seem to start at all, but moreso just a lore dump. I just felt like the author was dictating a bunch of cool science facts about the universe through the characters on screen. It's quite rare that I drop a show only a few episodes in, and even more rare that I skip something godzilla related. However, I was quite frankly too frickin bored

The setting is quite different, that's why many people won't get it the first time, as did I, but upon second viewing everything becomes clearer, the reiwa era of Godzilla franchise is something of a science fiction, political sattire, survival pretty uncommon for the kaiju genre. That's why I'm loving the Reiwa Era Of Godzilla be it The Legendary's Monsterverse, The Anime Trilogy, Singular Point, Shin Godzilla. It offers much more than the other eras, The Showa And The Heisei And The Millennium which were pretty much Kaiju Fights ( I Loved Those Too). I liked the science part of the series, it would be too easy if the military could drop a couple bombs and be done with it so the red dust and singular points definitely made it more interesting. I also really liked the mythology that they incorporated into why the monsters were here, and I also liked how they had a wide range of characters because it’s more believable if lots of people are there to put the puzzle together than if just 3 characters go out and save the world by themselves. My only problems with the show is that the characters didn’t have a whole lot of depth which made them a bit 1 dimensional, also even though it’s an anime the jet Jaguar group was just way to goofy looking which just really ruined their parts for me, not to mention the ending where jet Jaguar becomes big somehow and saves everyone because he was the answer all along, like what? Other than that the show was like a solid 7.5/10 for me.

It's like a disaster movie, if the solution was "slice it in twain with a spear-wielding robot". I love that. As for the humans, one thing I've gotten into over the years when it comes to human characters in Godzilla is that if you're going to include them, the least you could do is make them interesting. If not, shoo them away and use them as monster destruction fodder. I'm happy with the characters of the Monsterverse and I was fine with our main characters of SP.

My husband and I just finished this show tonight and while we can piece together a bit of the plot, for the most part we have no idea what the heck is going on in this show. The only reason we can even understand what we do in it is because we are both huge Godzilla fans and college grads in fields of math and science. I had to pop two Excedrin after finishing the last episode and the hour long discussion we had just to digest everything we had just watched. 🤯 I wanted to like this show. My husband REALLY wanted to like this show. I would have stopped watching half way through, but he wanted us to finish and after we did I can’t really say there was any pay off. Interesting idea…. but it felt like homework the show. (Bonus points if anyone gets that reference) Lol no joke, as I type this my husband is researching singularities and archetypes and reading it all out loud to me just to try to understand what the show failed to get across. We will probably end up rewatching the season and maybe then (after some research) we can understand this show.

I 100 percent agree. This show sucked. I still have no idea what the heck happened after watching the show twice. YES TWICE.

I totally understand your opinion. As a Kaiju fan myself, it's quite disappointing for the show name Godzilla. But as a mysterious, sci-fi, mind-bending anime fan, I loved the show so much. I'm glad that they use Godzilla name in the title cuz it's the main reason I discovered it. As a fan of both genres, this might be one of my favorite this year. The reinventions of Kaijus and their ties with higher dimensions are so ridiculous I couldn't question any of it. Just let it sink in. Just sharing my opinion cuz it seem like so many people hated the show or looked down on their creators for not being true to the Kaiju story.

I don't see how it can be "disappointing" when this Show gives Godzilla Fans everything that they wanted. Amazing Music, Amazing Story, Amazing Humans, Amazing Monsters, Amzing Action and Cinematography, Easter eggs and so much more!

I actually love this show other than the confusing idealogy of predicting time and tech stuff it's really good for godzilla fans which I am one and everything I said before are for normies and not hardcore fans of godzilla the show are definitely for beginner weebs and godzilla lore/theorists fans. for an anime the info isn't that high up its very subtle and not beey informative to things like naruto, jojo, and record or ragnarok (god damn info and flashback through every attack) and I like that (yea fights might take up more then 2 episodes but they let them fight) I loved it and I do want an season 2 it's so much better then the godzilla anime movies they were awful this was an very big improvement

Compared to the character roster of Rooster Teeth's RWBY series, the character count in this series is far smaller and better written. Personally, I like the series and had no issue with the science talk and understood some of it. If a second season does happen, I hope we get more Kaiju.

Yes I liked. I give it an 8/10, they used Showa Era as a base and pulled different aspects of the Godzilla universe, I understood the science stuff but it can be convoluted and confusing at times. Overall an enjoyable watch, but a slow burn.

I agree on the story. It was just rambling nonsense... I hated it. I feel that way about most anime in this day in age in this over-saturated genre. And of course their wasn't enough monster action. Especially from Godzilla. And they shouldn't have redone the evolving thing for Godzilla... Shin Godzilla did that already and we didn't need it again. Especially when one of his forms looked more like Varan than Godzilla. He should have just came out of the ocean in his main form. Or at least he should have reached his final form after he busted out of his shell in that one episode. The music and sound was fine. The visuals were fine. But everything else was just "meh" at best. I give this a 5.5 out of 10 rating.

Even as someone who enjoys science and strange physics, the dialogue is often dull and boring. I think it's more presentation that material. If we had more visuals of what the geniuses were talking about or at least a possible prophecy with Godzilla's attack and plan, I think people would enjoy it more since it'd be easier to digest what's going on.

Agreed. If they showed images other than two people sitting and talking, maybe with visual aids, it could've been more engaging. Also, I pity the poor bastard who had to animate those text message scenes. Imagine signing up to a Godzilla animate and THAT is what you work on.

That was the weird thing. Anime usually paints a picture of something that is the topic of discussion. This show didn't even bother with that. Instead we get text messages and obnoxious emojis from that stupid dog a.i.

I can't name any of the characters because they weren't characters. Just puppets talking about either nothing or what another group of people were about to do. Godzilla is a retred of Shin but much more confusing and is it just me or was the Atomic Breath scene shot like it was this angelic act? Only to be followed by Red dust Blood Rain over the carnage!?

Godzilla SP is underrated, barely anyone like to make CGI animations, actual animations and other things. Though the science almost blew all my brain cells it's pretty decent, I don't know why people hate it so much. Plus the monsterverse isn't even original nor canon to the original franchise even though it does look sick. And bro- Toho created Shin Godzilla, so basically it wasn't a ripoff.

this whole review boils down to - im a simpleton, uhhh where action? me bored people with intelect and actually very interested in the technology being described : dope please show me more. monsters should show up irl, cause clearly humanity needs a reset of these idiots

Waaa me smart so that means SP is good!!!! No the anime is fucking boring, i didn't come to a godzilla anime for science at the highest degree. People don't care for SP and it shows lmao. Godzilla is known for action not fucking human characters. Why do you think godzilla 2014 was hated at the time? Shit was a snore fest to sit through. No one goes "wow time to go see godzilla for the deep human characters and complex story!!"

As someone who doesn't mind high concept science, I hated this show. Because excuse me if boring dry characters with little personality sit and talk about the science of the events happening while people are probably DYING IN THE THOUSANDS instead of being straight forward and trying to solve the problem. I'm sorry, there is only so much of that I can take. Also, this show tried hard to be smart, it comes off really stupid. Ideas should not come at the expense of story and characters.

Hold on, it should be noted, this show didn't hit home with SOME fans - it has also received quite a bit of rightful praise. It's more accurate to say it's a divisive show. The same can be said about Shin Godzilla and most of the Monsterverse movies. Not sure that makes this that much different than any other G-media.
