Now that I have left China, do I feel like I have more freedoms? Was I really free in China? I share my thoughts on what it means to be free and what "freedom" actually means.
What are your thoughts do you think speech should be controlled to create a more stable society or should there be no controls on speech?

Among even minimally educated people in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America, it’s widely accepted that Americans are the most brainwashed people in the world. The brainwashing has been conducted by the small group of plutocrats within the English speaking world - they’re in action on two major battlefronts right now.

Most "free" moment I ever felt was during the first Gulf War, when nothing was going on and I had a brief moment to myself; I looked out of the hangar bay of my aircraft carrier, towards/to the horizon, as the sun was setting and felt such a momentous sense of freedom. Since then, I've been wanting to (and am now being drawn back to) get back to the ocean.

The word "freedom" has different meanings in different countries. In the US, we emphasize freedom of speech. We also say "talk is cheap", or "actions speak louder than words". The point is while in the US, we can say anything. But we can't do a lot of simple things like can't drink beer or alcohol while walking on the street or in a park. We think we own our houses but until we stop paying property tax, the government will take your house back. So, do we actually own our houses or are we only leasing it from our government? Most people in the US see communist as evil. But they don't even know what it's really like in China.

Today, can't talk about anything with people who don't just disagree, but simply because they are ignorant and only get their info from corporate media. Freedom & senseless freedom are two different things. Freedom comes with responsibilities. Like China , S'pore is also often criticised by the arrogant west , politicians & journalists alike , esp from the US & UK to be authoritarian , dictatorial & undemocratic , yes , by their holy standards. In other words we are criticised for not conforming to their holy image. The west needs to learn good courtesy & mutual respect. Freedom means different things to different people. When people in the west have made up their minds that their values & systems are better than others , they truly have a problem. US has the freedom to own guns to look kool , so be it , more deaths will follow. But those in the US who oppose firearms do not enjoy the freedom to stay safe & alive. People in US or UK often brag they can f**k & make fun of their presidents , well , so be it , we don't do it here. If the government does not perform , then they are out in the next election , it's that simple. What matters to me is to live in a safe environment , a progressive society without moronic clowns running the country. Just look at UK & US today , 2024. 🇸🇬

your mom is absolutely correct. what is freedom ? it all depends on the individual's perception of freedom. a couple years ago, a Hong Konger in UK said he would rather be a beggar in UK than be an emperor in China. For 99.9%of the people in this world, I believe they would rather be an emperor than a beggar. who doesn't want a comfortable living standard and not to worry about the basic needs of food and shelter?? the right to vote is meaningless if a person can't even provide comfortable food and shelter to the family. we have too many politicians and not enough statesmen. that's my perception of freedom. observation from canada.

I lived in China for 5 years, I came back in 2017. For me I found that reverse culture shock was more of an issue than landing in China was. How have you found that. I agree with you, a lot of people from the United States were telling me how terrible China is on personal rights. Of course there are issues, but when you think about the personal right to have a gun and then to use said gun in the ways that it has been abused it does make you wonder is this country doing as much to take care of personal rights? I found that what people forget is that there is no perfect government on earth. That each government has it's good points and it's bad points. But people are basically the same. We all want good jobs to take care of our families, we want a good place to live etc. Often I feel that news telling us someplace else is dangerous and doesn't hold our same values does more to keep us separate than allow us to see how similar we all really are. People should use their own judgement and not rely totally on what they hear on the news. Everyone has an agenda.

I can add some thoughts, I think Western liberals deliberately ignore a country's national freedom, diplomatic autonomy, that is, independence, the best case is the liberal and democratic Taiwan, Taiwan's three political party candidates need to go to Washington, D.C. before the election to get diplomatic support, if Tsai Ing-wen is elected by the Taiwanese, then Tsai Ing-wen listens to the Taiwan people, or listens to the United States? Especially in the controversy over the import of American ractopamine food, the KMT accepted ractopamine beef, while the DPP accepted ractopamine pork, but the Taiwan public opinion is very clear against any ractopamine food, so is the Taiwan president serving the locals Taiwanese? If the president of a country is not free, will the people he rules be free?

We have a bad notion of freedom as lack of interference. But as you point out, that can mean a spazzing toddler is 'free.' A better concept is that freedom is when you can make determinations between ultimate values (requiring a lot of moral education) and enact your choices aiming to achieve whatever value you decide is best (requiring a lot of technical education). Being at liberty to make yourself or others unhappy can run contrary to freedom in this deeper sense. What's crazy is this understanding is fully within the western philosophical tradition, but it seems we need to look at China to see how it can really work and to challenge ourselves. Thank you for this great video!

Historically freedom of speech is by and large means political freedom of speech so that an ordinary citizen or can criticize govt which is way too powerful for an individual to fight back. Based on what you said, Chinese govt has definitively reserved the right to react to a speech or not.

In a single-party state, the single party in power determines which subjects you're allowed to talk about. The subjects they don't want you to talk about are banned. In a two-party state like the US, a subject is banned if BOTH parties agree that they don't want you talking about it. If one party or the other allows you to talk about it, then it's permitted. In the US, criticism or outright mockery of US politicians is confused with free speech. Democrats mock Republicans. Republicans mock Democrats. This isn't free speech because one party permits attacks upon the other party for self-gain. It isn't free speech because there are subjects that both parties don't want the public to have free discussion about, and those subjects are banned. What are some of these subjects? They include the origins of Vid Co. (1991), who was on FreyJef SteinEp's client list, who bummed the SordNtream Lipe-Pine, the JahLuFa BiBaes in Raqi, virtually everything about "is it real?", what Elon Musk says about the Truthistry of Min, where the $15 trillion the US added to the national debt these past 6 years went, etc.

Freedom, and that is all in common all around the world, is rather something which disappears with the forthcoming of civilization of the masses. So if one thinks he is having a lot of freedom, his descendants will no longer have it. This is what history is teaching us. I all goes towards the extremes. Everywhere in the world. This is what we should be aware of. There is a tendency towards the less.

People, probably Americans more than anyone, babble on about freedom. We are not "free" in the US (or in any other country). What we have are constitutional "rights", which are unevenly enforced, but we have them. There ARE lots of laws and rules, but they can't (or aren't supposed to) violate your constitutional rights. The courts decide these issues. So rights in the US center around speech, gun ownership, privacy, search and seizure, trial by jury, etc... Everything else is open to regulation. I don't know if individual Chinese citizens have ANY codified "rights" like that. So your not talking about "rights". You're talking about flying under the radar.

Freedom of speech, press, religions, etc. to protect individuals' rights is also codified in China's Constitutional Law. You can search it online yourself. But the thing is we need to look at how it's really implemented in a society and why. The nuances there in reality are the key to study and tell any differences between how much freedom Americans have and how much freedom Chinese have. And that's a lot to look at and understand. Not to mention the cultural and historical experiences are very different in these two countries. As long as you know it's not all black and white is fine.

Am working to establish the digital nomad lifestyle. Am ex-military (10 years total; 7 years Navy, 3 years Army) and hoping to someday soon acquire a 36' to 42' sailboat). The "Freedom" of and in America is an illusion; think of the scene in "The Wizard of Oz": "pay no attention to the man behind the curtain". At time index 0:29 you show a posting about freedom of thought, and yet EVERYTHING is monitored now (with or without your knowledge, permission or consent). For those who have never actually taken the time to read a book, they might want to pick up the book "1984" by George Orwell and pay attention to The Thought Police.

It’s interesting that you mentioned 1984, which has been used to describe China by certain media for ages. I’m Chinese and lived in both countries. A few years back an American friend said something that stick with me. He believed that the US government has been deliberately keep their people dumb by cutting education funds. My friend used to be a high school teacher in US and he said students in the 70s and 80s was brilliant at math. When I was studying at college in the US, my classmates could not calculate cubicle volume, which was a huge shock to me. It just made me wonder, Now with social media and misinformation everywhere, it’s extremely easy to divide people. Anyone can just make up some story and it will be “fact “ online within 12 hours. It’s honestly scary….

@@xueshang1035 Quite true. I graduated from High School in 1989, but was schooled classically, as my grandparents raised me and believed a good education was absolutely important. My grandfather was a Freemason and raised me to be a free thinker, someone that "believes half of what they see and none of what they hear" (in other words, if I believe anything, it is because I found the proof for myself). The term that your friend was probably trying to describe was (and is) "dumbing people down" and he was absolutely correct. The quality of education in today's America is a pale imitation of what it once was. As for social media, it really didn't do the people any favors; what social media DID do is make it easier for people to get caught up in "groupthink" and not take responsibility for themselves.
@xueshang1035

@@briancossey4773 well said, I completely agree the social media can be a double edged sword. Everybody is falling into certain narratives, without conscious. I don’t agree with all the censorship China has been doing, but one must wonder, without any censorship, what this 1.4 billion population country would turn into? Even the most remote corners of Xinjiang and Tibet has access to internet, and it would be insane to assume everyone is rational enough to think twice. So it’s a dilemma. Freedom shouldn’t be limited to the freedom of speech. I honestly believe freedom means one has the capability to choose whoever he/she wants to be, within the law. Rather than say whatever you want whenever you want

Free speech and free press are meant for the media, because very few can hear what you as a person say. But it is important for the media, so they can publish the untruth, that is the media freedom. If you said something wrong on social media, then there is account suspension, that is again a part of media freedom, because social media platform are a part of media, they are free to censor. In the end so the rich can influence and control the public opinions. You know, that is what capitalism is all about, that is why liberal democracy is always a part of capitalism.
