Was I Too Harsh On Pixar's Soul...?

With Pixar rereleasing Soul in theaters, I figured it would be the perfect time to revisit the movie once again, as after all I have quite the tumultuous history with this animation. Not only being one of my very first viral videos, but also being a movie that I like less than the average person. I disliked the sound, I disliked the story, I disliked the message. And yet, this movie won Oscars! It had a great reception, and in more recent years Pixar projects have especially started to look worse. So here's a retrospective through the movie once again to reevaluate my thoughts with the wider context of the world now understood. And asking us the question: Was I Too Harsh On Pixar's Soul...?

...Well, let's just see how SUCCESSFUL bringing it to the big screen will be, considering it's still free on Disney Plus..

To be fair, Terry isn't exactly a villain. She's an antagonist, but she's just doing her job making sure the souls go where they need to go. Anyway, I personally love this movie, and consider it the most recent "Pixar like" Pixar movie to come out, a movie with a message that hits you right in the feels. A Pixar movie doesn't need to feel "nostalgic" to be good, even though I'm sure it will be nostalgic in a few years or so. And I'm glad it's getting a chance to be on the big screen.

I watched Soul right around the time I graduated from university. I had already been struggling to find my passion and my purpose, especially since I was just getting my degree to have a "nice shiny piece of paper that looks good on a resume" and had no plans for my future after graduation. Being asked what I wanted to do with the rest of my adult life when I had no clue what I really enjoyed and seeing my peers all work towards their future goals in fields they were so passionate about made me feel like I was drowning in a sea of self-doubt, while they were all floating just fine with their "life's-purpose preservers" on. That's why this movie's message hit me so hard. If you spend your whole life searching for purpose, you never live a single day. This movie helped me realize that just living is enough.

Soul is amazing. Pixar’s most mature movie. The message behind it is something everyone needs to hear. Pete Docter did not miss with this one.

One positive I give to the movie's final message is that it doesn't just explain what you should do with life, but what you shouldn't as well. Joe was obsessed with achieving his 'purpose', pursuing his life goal and making it 'big'. To the point he put aside a lot of other things and even failed to recognise the accomplishment of that goal when he did achieve it (This is water, I want the ocean). The concept of the 'Spark' was meant to help Joe realise that the reason to go to Earth, to live, is not some grand purpose or meaning of life, but simply the enjoyment of life itself. He was not enjoying life as he was, constantly chasing an overblown dream in his head, ignoring the world around him. Only after a literal 'out-of-body' experience did he register the ways he was failing in his life, and what he could do to fix those mistakes and properly move forward.

Though is sucks that the film couldn't come out on the big screen when it was initially planned, I sort of think that this film came out at the right time and in the right place. The end of 2020, when we were all scared and hunkered down in our homes for almost a year, not knowing if it was the end of the world as we know it, contemplating our own mortality with an at-the-time deadly virus, but at least having this new Disney streaming service to keep us occupied. While we were stuck in lockdown, this film came along to remind us as to why life is worth living and to remind us of all the little things in life we took for granted before being stuck in isolation I know that at the very least this film was really touching to me when I was constantly scared and anxious about the future and covid

To me, every other Pixar movie has been “for children with a good story and moral that also has something for adults. Sometimes the lessons of the story won’t be appreciated till the child watching grows up and reflects back upon the movie”. Soul to me is the one exception, where it feels like “this is made for adults. Children may also get something out of this; but they won’t appreciate it until they are grown up. Because it’s not made for them” it’s similar, yet so different. I hope that makes since.

Hot take about the ending: as someone who's been slugging it out within the music industry (albeit, not as a musician, but in an functionally similar and extremely adjacent role) for the better part of a decade and getting nowhere, I fucking loved it. Yes, the movie focuses heavily on the motif of enjoying the little things in life, but it's all done through the lens of someone who is so deeply passionate about music that the thought of ending it before they've had a chance to intimately experience what they know is their potential is just unfathomable. And it's not about the fact that I feel that concept deeply, it's about the fact that it's my full reality of life on full display. I don't know if it's technically a good ending in terms of story structure, but I'd be lying if I said that, if given the same choice Joe was given, I would have taken death. Joe did exactly what I would have done - which speaks even more volumes than I'm giving it credit for, given my additional history of mental illness. He finally knew what hope in his art felt like, and he wasn't about to squander it. That ending is fucking brilliant. (Side note, I don't know what it is about Pixar, but you can splice at least three of their movies together (possibly four given Inside Out 2 is coming out and it's been announced that there will be a character called "Anxiety") and get spot on representations of different elements of my life. Like, it's one thing for them to be movies that are at least beautiful enough to warrant one watch, but they also did an entire movie about an girl, born and raised in Southern Ontario, who clearly watched way too much 2000-era MuchMusic with her friends - the only differences being I wasn't born/raised in Toronto, nor am I Chinese, and I would have been in grade 12 when she was in grade 9.)

On the theme, not every movie needs to ‘break the boundary’. Human nature is repetitive and we often forget the simplest messages. Stories are there to remind us of these messages sometimes and that’s okay. If we only had ONE movie per theme, entertainment would be boring. We would have no variety in what we watch: the execution of a tried and true theme. I often find that my favorite stories are the ones that take a simple theme and execute it in a new and thought-provoking way. Think of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. It basically has the same theme of “enjoy your life in the time you have, in the little moments and bonds we share”. The execution, I think most of us can agree, is absolutely phenomenal and moved so many people in such a strong way. If it never got a chance because “the theme is too generic and redundant” we would have missed this masterful piece of art and storytelling. Sure, some movies are boring with generic themes, but that’s almost always due to poor execution in tandem. And yes, this is ultimately just my opinion. But I do wish movies weren’t criticized for “having a basic theme”. Sometimes, those stories are the best.

Well, I think that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' synth heavy score is a very good fit to the world to the point where I struggled to notice it and that's rare for me. That's a good sign because in film scoring, you don't the music to pop out all the time to the point where it's completely noticeable. Instead, it should more fit like a glove which I think is the case for this film. Also, I've seen this movie twice and both times I cried a lot. It is my second favourite Pixar movie second only to up.

The conflicting thought I have, is that I thought he should have died at the end of the movie, but it would just be another story where the black male protagonist dies in the end. Add on top of that the “he’s not really in his own body “ it would have been another story “for black people” where he’s not human and he dies in the end

I’m not gonna point this out regarding Soul specifically, but about an idea you brought up. You said that you personally couldn’t identify with the main characters, and though you didn’t say it outright, it was implied that that was a negative for you. And of course this is all personal opinion, but I think there’s a big difference between an unrelatable character, and a character you don’t see yourself in. I think seeing characters that are nothing like us is really important too. It’s how we’re able to see the world through a different lense, to learn to understand a different perspective. It helps us be more empathetic and compassionate towards others, even when we don’t fully understand why they think or feel or act the way they do. So... I guess the point I’m trying to make, is that it’s a good thing that you didn’t really relate to the main characters on a personal level, and you should allow it to show you a new perspective.

Wow, i couldnt disagree more with you on this one. I can't even imagine analyzing this movie in such a technical way because i just get so lost in it and so fully feel what the movie is trying to make me feel. I think both main characters have very strong arcs and turning points. And i think it does a great job taking a message as simple as "enjoy the little things in life" and making you understand just how significant it is and how its actually quite COMPLICATED to do so when you have internal and/or external pressure to be successful
@magical571

i think he maybe didn't connect as much since he himself is very much a work oriented person, but i don't think he struggles with it as someone like joe would (not saying dazz doesn't have struggles, just not the same ones). and doesn't seem at all like the type to be artistically oriented either (which has it's own existencial type of questions specific to those artitiscally oriented) or the type to see or be in need of valuing the little things, taking things slow as they come and enjoying, mananing self placed pressure etc. like i'm sure he understands all of this in theory, but something tells me he doesn't connect with it on the same level others did. At least not in this point in his life. It happens, not everyone can see themselves in some characters, and thus willl mis the point.

I generally agree with you the whole way here. It's not a classic, but it's good. Definitely has some awesome moments and some not-so-awesome ones. The biggest miss for me was Joe coming back to life at the end. It would have been a lot more impactful if he came to peace with his death and moved on. Especially after realizing he'd had such a large impact on people, including 22. Him coming back was a cop out so that people could have good feels. But it robs the movie of having real, I dunno, stakes? Like, this was for real, real.

i revisited the movie in december n here were my thoughts! they’re not very positive lol i was having a magnificent time but at some point towards the end i started feeling really disillusioned and im not sure why. it’s both funny and heartfelt, but by the last 20-30 minutes i was ready for it to end. Later….
i feel manipulated by this film? i wasn’t sure what had me feeling so uncertain, but i think i know what it is. i think it’s the lack of Blackness throughout the film. any attempt at racial commentary is superficial, and there’s no commitment to exploring the Black experience outside of the niche of jazz. Joe easily could have been a white man and the film’s minimal substance would not change. the lack of Black creators behind the scenes is tangible and confounding. this next red flag for me was raised at the beginning and yet i was disarmed somehow, but who decided it would be alright to have Tina Fey’s caucasian voice come out of the mouth of a Black character? it feels like a massive oversight, and i’m left with the same disorientation i felt after seeing the Blackface in West Side Story (1961). 22 should have been voiced by a person of color given that the filmmakers knew that they would be body-switching with Joe. ultimately, i think i was ready for the film to end because i was sick of the incessant focus on Tina Fey’s character. frustration with Pixar’s tendency to transform their few Black characters into animals is always played off as a joke, but no. that is a genuine criticism. why does Tina Fey spend more time in Joe’s body than Jamie Foxx? how does 22 have an easier time navigating Black spaces than Joe does? bitch, my head is spinning. unfortunately, it’s another (superficially) Black film made for white audiences. for other examples see: The Blind Side and Them.
(well, don’t actually see those. yuck.)
@SoonSilver
@SoonSilver 4 месяца назад
I always wonder why the race matters? If the characters good then they're good, and I'm confused on your last comment "it's a black film made for white audiences" no seriously what does that even mean? Also racial commentary isn't needed in a movie just cause the characters black, like dude as a black person I'm tired of every black character always having the "racism" treatment where that's all that surrounds them. It's sad imo
@magical571
@magical571 2 месяца назад
i'm sorry muy guy, but this is not a movie attempting to make racial commentary in the first place.....in a way, you yourself are being racist by assuming (concsiously or not), that joe being black automatically means the movie has or will explore racial angles, and what those angles have to be.i, personally, hate it when latino characters are placed in just to specifically explore race issues (and it usually ending up being unapealing to the same audience they are trying to please...we don't want to be treated as just our race you know?), i feel condescended to, why can't we just be characters as any other in media? in a way, you are depicting the opposite of how i feel, and while valid, i think it's a little misguided. Not every story with a white character explores white racial dynamics. Why does a movie with a black character have to? You are assuming some kind of ownership overmovies with black characters, in the way that they should be takling the issues you deem relevant, wether it's relevant to the theme of the movie or not, and as far as i'm aware souls belong to humans, not races lol. At this point, seeing a black character is so natural for me and many others, that a comment like yours comes as odly out of place. Can't we just normalize good characters being good and varied? no? And even then, i've heard the type of argument you are making about their voice and the body swapping. But seriously....listen to yourself, what you are saying is assuming that the movie is pandering in some way, to who? who knows, i mean, by your logic, white people wouldn't want a character like joe, and you wouldn't like it either no? not according to me, but by your own logic. So what would be there to gain in the sort of disingenuous way you are implying by the end? ("another (superficially) Black film made for white audiences"). unless you are wrong, and it is just a good character that happens to be black. I understand it can be disapointing if you saw a black character on the cover and were expecting or craving an exploration on the "black life experience", but that's not on the movie but on you. I don't see it as a "black film", it's just a movie with t black protagonist. that's it. it's perfectly fine. you are definitely projecting other frustrations with media onto this,. and while understandable, you are taking it a little too far with this...

"Turning Red flopped, Lightyear flopped..." Good. I think there's a misunderstanding that those movies didn't deserve what they got They failed not because of societal changes, or any other external factors They failed because they were bad movies, it was Pixar's fault plain and simple

You sure? I mean Turning Red especially is on the lower end of Pixars work but still really good compared to whats done by many other studios, plus that one was of course a streaming exclusive. Lightyear I'm more tempted to believe you on though.

@@SoonSilver i'm gonna take a wild guess and say it's because joe is black. i know, it's a basic af take, and one i disagree with, but i've heard it a lot. Like the movie has to be a racial commentary exploration, or else the character doesn't earn it's right to just be black in a movie lol.
