Good to know that the best devil may cry game in 2003 was in fact Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne: Featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry Series

This is one of the few games that landed in "video game limbo" for me. It's absolutely unenjoyable, but so incredibly insignificant that I can't even call it bad. It's just a massive waste of time.

Devil May Cry 2, ironically, got two things right. The gun combat was the base for Gunslinger and it was the start of bloody palace.

Waiting through that countdown for a "No" was hilarious. Lmao😂

I like how Dante's personality is such a 180 from DMC1 that the game publishers made DMC3 a prequel to explain why.

The best part about DMC2 is that it makes DMC3 one of the best comeback stories of all time

The funny thing is the whole meme of "Featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series" is this Dante. They used this Dante in Lucifer's Call/Nocturne where the meme spawned from, right down to his outfit and looks to his coin flipping antics and if you have the knowledge that both sides of his coin are heads, you can easily win the coin toss to recruit him at a discount price by betting on heads.

I cannot believe someone is bothering. I'm not gonna defend this game but as someone who thoroughly beat almost every mode in a single night as a young lad, and then proceeded to hear people who never touched the game bash it to hell for the next 2 decades, I appreciate you coming along to actually play and analyse it, I'm sure it wasn't very engaging though so sorry about that 😂

Dante's outfit and Despair Embodied are the best parts of DMC2.

I was 12 or 13 when dmc came out. I was sold on it from an issue of game informer. DMC 2 broke my heart.

You didn't mention that if you beat the game on DMD mode, you unlock Trish from the first game, who now wields Devil Sword Sparta as her primary weapon. She shares the same moves as Alistor, and her guns no longer causes enemies to rise into the air from continuous fire.

The first Devil May Cry, was almost a metroidvania, with an mission based style. Which combines a small world, but still expanding what we can explore, they did the same in 3, you revisit some scenes giving the feeling of a contained world and scenery. It was lovely, I missed it really in Devil May Cry 4 and 5.

Devil May Cry 2 has the same theme as DmC Devil May Cry LOL. Except DMC2 gave us prototypes of mechanics which will be used in DMC 3 and more importantly, The Rebellion sword, as Dante's signature weapon.

Devil May Cry 2 has done 9 things right: 1. Dante's outfit 2. Dante has probably the best jump/aerial movement in whole series 3. Ability to shoot at two different enemies at the same time which was in some way a start/basis for gunslinger style 4. Ability to dodge and wallrunning (which is not that useful but looks cool) with circle button 5. Ability to change weapons (only guns for some reason) 6. Aim lock (which if you want to stop aiming at enemy you have to hold L2 from what I remember which is VERY WIERD) 7. "King? Yeah, here's your crown" 8. Dante's DT looks the best in the whole series 9. Some music is really great (but other sucks so hard like f.e. JOKAGTULM or whatever the name was theme) In lots of ways DMC 2 has been a bit of a Demo for abilities used later in DMC 3.

You can simply leave the 1st helicopter fight. The game doesn't tell you, but you can. Hitting helicopter in melee deals more damage if you hit the part with the parasite eye. You can also do hard lock-on to cancel out soft lock-on and make hitting switches easier. Funny thing is that enemy AI is a little bit more awake on higher difficulties, which makes the game a little bit more fun to play.

Genuinely surprised this is even getting an episode I don’t think I’ve ever seen ANYONE defend this game or say it was any good at all.

The only part I actually remember liking about this, as somebody who played both characters, was the ending where Dante flips the coin to decide who goes into Hell and it turns out to be a double headed coin so he was always going. It was a bit cheesy but still a fairly Dante thing to do. The rest was utter crap and I don't know how I played it all.

This game is genius. Dante is SO Powerful at this point in his career, that nothing poses a challenge to him. Capcom made a power fantasy, putting the player in Dante's Diesel Jeans.

To think I played this game on the PS2 in Dante Must Die difficulty (where your guns no longer properly juggle enemies), I was truly a masochist. I don't remember anything from the game compared to Devil May Cry 1, it must be my self preservation instinct kicking in for my own good. Thank you Josh for your sacrifice on experiencing true suffering with us.

fun fact, you can actually get through the timed gate with out the quick heart. Since rolling is slightly faster than walking, thus making the quick heart truly useless

When I was 6 and this was my first devil may cry I didn’t know any better and this was peak and my favorite game

now I can't wait for him to cover DMC 3... like the first game was awesome. The second game was absolute shite but that 3rd game... it EASILY the best in the series .

Lucia and her devil trigger are two of the best designs of DMC, and the twist of her story, the angelic powers that are hinted at and threat of the lore getting deeper getting subverted in a way i still can't fully forgive despite adoring what it does for her character arc, is absolutely delicious and i'm glad they brought it back for DMC 4. i love her throwing knife feathers, i love the arm blades in Devil Trigger, her whole moveset is the right kind of stylish to stand out even in a cast this stacked with absolute Icons. i can only hope they bring her back and give her a better showing because she deserves a better fucking game

To be fair, "press forward and sometimes square to progress" does sound like a dream game for a games journalist.

There is a Trish mode you can unlock, even with a cheat. She has Dante´s DMC 1 moveset, making her the best-playing character.

Devil may cry 2" A short cliffnotes version: Focus groups complained about the guns feeling too weak in the first game. So they actually gave the game the opposite problem instead of telling those loonies they were playing a spectacle fighter.

I know it's not a good game, but I always had a soft soft for it. It's the only DMC game that I actually liked walking around in. The archtecture and liminality gave it a tone completely opposite to the rest of the series. Plus, you get to fight a demon skyscraper. I can't hate it.

Can't wait for Devil May Cry 3 review in the next 2 years. Also I just realized all 3 games have the running theme of the female side character being related to the main villain, Trish in DMC1, Lucia in 2 and Mary/Lady in 3.

I recently learned that the only devil may cry game that one of my friends has played, was DMC2, and you know, it's not always easy learning that your friend has a disability, but I do hope that they're able to move on and live a fulfilling life despite that.

I'm willing to go against the grain and like something that's hated. Like how I find bits of gold in Drakengard 2 and think it has some of the best gameplay of the series(including NieR) despite having the worst story presentation, but dear God DMC2 is bad. Like really fucking painful.

Fun fact: The guy who voiced Griffon in DMC1 was an out of work opera singer who was embarrassed to take a voice acting role for a video game. He auditioned for the job because he needed the money, and only agreed to do it if he remained uncredited. I know that's not related to DMC2, but it's a fascinating piece of Devil May Cry history.

Even how dissapointing DMC 2 is, I have to appreciate some of the designs in this game. Dante (probably the best outfit design in the series), enemies, bosses (which is looks cool but poor execution) customisable amulet for devil trigger and Majin Devil Trigger. It such a shame this game had so much potential but due to directed by unknown that isn't Hideki Kamia and developed only 6 months, this game came out in disastrous state. (Megaman X7 is another dissapointing Capcom game came out in the same year). Even though Hideaki Itsuno try to forget the existence of this game, imagine DMC 2 remake or reboot somedays but only time will tell.

<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="496">8:16</a> A few little details about this. The guns in DMC2 are actually *not* more powerful than in DMC1 damage wise. They can stunlock some enemies, yeah, but DMC1's guns are actually more potent in terms of damage, you gain more Devil Trigger from them, and when you are good at mashing in a rhythm, you can fire faster than in DMC2, combined with techniques such as shotgun/grenade cancelling raising their DPS so much further than it should. When it comes to DMC2's combat, Melee attacks actually deal more damage on average than guns, especially with the elemental amulets when on Devil Trigger, and there *are* cool combos in there, but are weighted down by bad feedback and animations, yet guns are so safe to use (on normal mode at least), while giving actual feedback and having satisfying animations, that they *feel* like they are even more overpowered than they actually are (that said, they still are too potent for their own good, juggling most enemies from a distance is too stupid). If anything, this game is a fascinating study on how bad feedback and animations (the entire melee combat system) can discourage the player from using tools that, all things considered, are more potent than the tools that have decent feedback and animations and show results immediately (guns in this game). For context, DMC1 never suffered from this, it was really good at giving appropiate feedback depending of the potency of attacks, both melee and range.

I recently got into the DMC series because it was on sale. I've gotten through the first game, and I played it mostly because I was told that you should go through them in order, though skipping DMC2. I enjoyed Devil May Cry a lot more than I expected, considering that I played it to get to the next one. My only real complaint about the first game was the camera angles, and the weird control issues that came with moving to the spot where the camera angle changed. I'm now on DMC 3, and a lot of the things I thought were weird about how DMC worked make a lot more sense now. For example, on the first game I would fight bosses by activating devil trigger and just trying to burn them down, but on the three I find it a lot easier to learn the bosses moves and counter them.

I'm willing to believe the Tomb Raider rumor only because strafing with the pistols feels very similar between the games. Laura Croft was possibly one of the earliest if not the first Character-Action shooters we've seen.

This gave me flashbacks to Matthewmatosis' DS2 video many years ago. I wonder if history will repeat itself: A Brit soon comes swinging in with "A defence of DMC2", followed by yet another Brit picking the last one apart sentence by sentence.

Another thing about the Infested Helicopter. If you wanted to play this like a regular DMC2 game, and hit it with your sword, you'll jump up to it, hit it once or twice, then get hit by a rocket, knocking you to the bottom of building, forcing you to spend a minute jumping back up.

I beat this game in one afternoon when I was like 14. Such a weird sequel to DMC. but 3 was fantastic.

In 2007 when I expressed interest in playing the DMC games my friend's eyes lit up and he said he'd bring the 1st & 3rd games the next day for me the play over the weekend. I asked, "1st & 3rd? What about the second game?" He said, "Come here" and gave me a slap (not a legit slap, just a joking one) and said, "We don't talk about the second game"

Regarding <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="2350">39:10</a> about being locked onto enemies while trying to hit switches, you can "unlock" by holding R2. You then can freely hit the switches.

i almost want to be disappointed that he didn't bring up how to unlock Trish as a playable character. but you know what. this was my entry into the DMC franchise. and i liked it alot as 8 year old kid granted when DMC 3 came out i was like wow this is way cooler. but because i still hadn't played 1 and in my mind sequels were always better, i had assume DMC 1 was worst than 2. of course i learned eventually that DMC 2 was hot garbage and DMC 1 is a masterpiece, but for some reason it still fascinates me. we didn't have a memory card at the time so i would play and beat the game every week in just under 3 hours a time just to unlock the bloody palace, or Trish. what a strange time.

You dont actually have to fight the infested chopper 3 separate times. You can just jump through the broken wall and ascend the building thats on fire and then run straight to the main boss encounter at the end of the level.

I've played and completed this game a couple of times when I was a kid but I never knew about the Sin Devil Trigger. I always thought it was something DMC5 introduced. Pretty cool!
