Live by Honor. Kill by Stealth.
I remember Tenchu 1 being one of the greatest ninja experiences on the Playstation 1, but does it hold up today?
I'm going to finish both characters stories, and achieve grand master ranking on every level to see how hard it really was, i'll analyse all the mechanics and level design and then ask, Tenchu 1, was it any good?
Massive thanks to the supporters on Patreon and Twitch who keep the channel alive and let me make longer form reviews like this.

Tenchu would make for such an incredible remaster, especially the 2nd game - I remember spending more time in its level creator than any other game around those days

I don't think it would, since there are no remasters that are actually just remasters that don't ruin the feel of the original game. I think the only possible exception was Red Faction Guerrilla. In case someone says it, no, the bluepoint demon souls was not a good remaster.

loved the tenchu series. my greatest kill moment that I still remember clearly to this day was in the last level there were 2 guards right next to each other next to a pillar I was on top of. I distracted one with a rice ball, dropped down with an arial attack removing the arm of the second guard, then quickly took a few steps to slice the throat of the first. the cinematic camera framed it PERFECTLY so as I was killing him, you could see the other guy bleeding out in the background.

Tenchu has to come back. We have a lack of activity in the Stealth genre - MGS lost its soul, Splinter Cell lost its priorities, Thief had a meh remake. 10:30 Tenchu's quirky Jinglish voices is from the fact it just wasn't primarily made for Western audience. It was primarily a Japanese game for Japanese and it was hastily translated to English as an afterthought. They obviously went in pretty seriously into the martial arts side, using genuine Jitsu moves etc. They might not have thought it would be much of a hit in US. The translations are wacky and voices weird because US audience wasn't a big consideration.

I remember Tenchu: Stealth Assassin's very well. You see Tenchu was released around the same time as MGS. My best friend was so excited when we found out MGS was out that we went to Walmart at 3:00 AM and picked it up. I decided to buy Tenchu for myself instead. While MGS was a better game I absolutely loved Tenchu. We just got our first appointment together a few weeks prior and were ready for the pure gaming bliss that we received. Because the apartment was ours we did what we wanted and what we wanted was to create an arcade like experience in our living room. We ran 6 TVs with 2 PSXs, 2 N64s, 1 Saturn, and on 9/9/99 2 Dreamcasts. We wound up playing Tenchu and MGS side-by-side on many nights until their completion. What a time to be alive and a gamer with our own place!

The funny thing about this generation of design is they'll come up with an amazing groundbreaking idea, then just not see the obvious ways to apply it. "Hey, running across these rooftops is really fun, what should we do for the forest level? If only trees had some sort of interconnected network of elevated limbs :("
@FigmentHF
@FigmentHF 2 года назад
I have to imagine that these things are failure of tech or implementation, rather than imagination. I assumed they tried treetop stealth and for whatever reason it was causing issues or simply not functioning well. It could, of course, also have simply never occurred to them, but this is unlikely. There are countless examples of “ninjas in the trees” littered throughout all of the source materials that influence this game
@MeatSnax
@MeatSnax 2 года назад
@@FigmentHF yeah I don't think Tenchu has "sticky" walking where you don't fall off as easily, maybe it was just not fun to fall of tree branches constantly. For what it's worth though, Wrath of Heaven has a forest level that's also a corridor, and it's the worst part of the game.

Most shortcomings of classic games esp in the psx level is it is clear that all of these companies were experimenting with these mechanics and 3d in general. We want Tenchu. Not just any sequel, THIS TENCHU. We want the same plot, the same characters, the same enemies with the same weapons, the same moves, the same techniques of evasion, rolling and jumping, the same stealthy kills, the same levels, the same darkness on the horizon, and especially the same wonderful musics. Just an addition of graphics, we ask for nothing else. It being understood that a few additional levels and a few more playable characters with a parallel plot (such as Onikage for example), along with the ability to lock onto enemies and move corpses would not be disdained. In summary, the same game not distorted but improved. Sekiro was an awkwardly missed opportunity: the developers really could have replaced Tenchu. But once again marketing has prevailed over common sense, and instead of simply inserting those half dozen stealthy kills that would have given the game unrivaled longevity, the same longevity that made Tenchu a title to play and replay for years, for the sole pleasure of infiltrating a hostile environment and getting rid of all the enemies with elegance and without ever being discovered, they preferred to mutilate it from birth: and once you've passed the last level, Sekiro is archived, like any other game. A remake of Tenchu could be a unique opportunity : whoever realizes this dream will become rich, and will have the gratitude of millions of users who are nostalgic for this masterpiece.

Shinobido: Way of the Ninja (PS2) was an absolutely amazing spiritual successor to Tenchu. Acquire made it after they lost the Tenchu IP to FromSoft. It includes crafting, base defence, and best of all the complete freedom to work for any of the three factions vying for control of the province and approach missions in any way you want, including betraying your clients. Taking missions to cut supply lines led to hungry guards who were more likely to pick up those poisoned rice balls... It was excellent all round, and I think it even had a level editor? Tenchu 1 and 2 were two of the games we played the absolute crap out of! I loved the first game, but the second gave you swimming mechanics, a blowgun, and a map creator mode that we had a total blast with. I probably spent more time playing Tenchu and Tenchu 2 with my friends than any other title and somehow, it never seemed to get boring for us. I have so many good memories of these games despite the obvious flaws and I really wish they would release a better and updated version for modern consoles. Unfortunately, it looks like the franchise is dead in the water for now.

The armor is given to you not because of normal enemies, but for bosses, if the armor was "realistic" you would be penalized which would be worst, and any other "clothing" would have similar problems, so I don't think is that bad of an idea knowing it will be harder later, remember you could have grand master in the first run too

Tenchu, Devil May Cry, Onimusha and Ninja Gaiden collectively set the stage for the 'Soulsborne' style action adventure games with the high difficulty spikes yet fair hack and slash gameplay mechanics. However, these games are also nothing like the slower more defensive style gameplay of Souls; these games are more quick combo execution.

@@natyder Christ, how can you say something like that, when every second AAA release is riddled with bugs and unfinished? Yes, there are great games coming out, but so much of it too early and concentrating too much on milking the players for every cent they can, that it feels completely wrong to call this the best era of the industry. If the devs had the means they have today, 20-25 years ago, there's no limit to what they could have achieved then.
