For more context, the book was originally over 400 pages and it was reported Justin's lawyers as well as other people mentioned had a hand in it. The shorter page count was later updated in Amazon. There's a LOT of horrible crimes done to her that have been reported throughout the years not mentioned in this book. This is almost a safe telling of her story for the masses because the people behind the conservatorship are VERY powerful in Hollywood.

What really schocked me is when she talked about how a lot of male celebs go on to become addicts, criminals and no one really tries to do anything nor take anything away from them. They hurt themselves and others and live without consequences. Meanwhile she lost her kids, right to vote, drive, get married, control her finances, was sterialized, forced to take medication that pretty much made her numb the entire day. So so sad. But also a perfect example of how the patriarchy works.

Patriarchy? Smh No that’s just how evil works. They did the same thing to Elvis Presley until his death. Many Biographies written about his life from Different people’s perspective show he was basically a slave and lived no different from what Britney describes her life under the conservatorship. Music industry and Hollywood are just disgusting industries as a whole.

You’re a complete moron. The fact that she had a conservatorship means she was LOVED while the men were left to die. Are you really making the case that because she’s alive and Chris Farley is dead, he’s somehow MORE privileged than her? This woman was so loved that the people around her knew she needed to be protected or else she would blow through from her millions, overdose, or humiliate herself even more than she already did. The fact that she was protected from all that and the men were left to die proves that this was reverse sexism. I bet Chris Farleys family wakes up and wished every day that he had a conservatorship, maybe then he’d still be alive.

The “I’m Britney Spears Now” line from her father put a pit in my stomach. I used to think maybe her family was just doing the best they could, but if even half of what she’s written is true, I can understand how hurtful it all was and why she wants to distance herself from them. It was a good read; I just wish it was a little longer. I’m glad though she got to say her piece.

She said she’s writing a second volume so who knows. There’s probably a lot she can’t say out of fear of powerful people in the industry. When Michael Jackson spoke out about how he was going to own half of Sony Records after finishing his last tour and album under his contract, he “died” a year later… to me that was very suspicious.

Hearing about this story always makes me want to cry. The fact that adult, mentally able people can have their agency and free will stripped away by someone legally. It's no less than modern slavery. When a world famous superstar struggled so much to break free from a conservatorship, consider a laymen being abused in the same way and their chance of escape.

im surprised by how many themes this book has tackled: mental health, fame, greed, family, the double standards, young love, etc. def one of the best books i've read this year. there are lots of gut wrenching moments that made my heart ached for her and i got almost teary eyed. the fact that its real life made it even more devastating, shes had a horrifying life and makes u think if the heavy price of fame is even that worth it. people around her be taken advantage of her. i cannot believe how strong she is, i dont know if i can be that strong. im glad she didnt give up or thought about suicide as a way out. im glad shes free and happy now.

There’s a clip from a documentary (during the conservatorship, before the Free Britney movement I think) where the interviewer asks Britney, “do you think you’ll still be doing this when you’re 40, 50?” And in the second before she answers, in her eyes there is a look of desperation or even horror at the thought of the years and years ahead of her. But she smiles weakly and says, “I hope so. But maybe just doing nothing, that would be good too.”

Does anyone remember the music video Justin Timberlake made, with the main girl looking exactly like Britney and HEAVILY implying she was cheating and he was an innocent victim? People grabbed on to that narrative and used it to feel ok to treat her dismissively and like garbage. Nobody looked out for her, and I can’t imagine a PR team around a star as big as Britney letting that happen now.

Finally, someone here who gets it. At this point, it really does not matter who cheated first. Justin is NO victim and he himself had a record of cheating before this even happened. Justin did what he did out of pure spite and to make himself look innocent in the process. Britney would never do what he did. Obviously Britney herself isn’t perfect. But she would never cross that line. I still can’t forgive Justin because to this day he doesn’t seem truly remorseful for anything he’s done, to both her and Janet. He has NO SHAME. It would be different if they had just broken up. He took it to another level.

@roxybarone she was not allowed BECAUSE she abused them. Are you that niave to not understand how the court system works? Lol... why have no other famous rich Female singers have their kids taken away..? Cause Britney is insane. There's no conspiracy. She's washed up and makes no money for anyone. She's not worth any kind of "conspiracy" when she's worthless.. the drug addiction to speed made her worthless and unable to work with. Britney is a drug addict. She was not trafficked she was put under supervision because she's a meth head abd has Paranoid psychosis. After she tried to drown her son in the bath tub and failed a drug test she lost custody abd was NEEDED to be helped. She's not a reliable narrator BECAUSE SHE HAS DELUSIONS. DER. she also lies for manipulative gain, as is typical with narcissists like her. “Defendant Spears immediately ran back towards her house screaming ‘Preston,’” the document revealed. “She entered the residence through two French doors on the north side. Plaintiff exited the pool house, hearing Sean Preston screaming in terror and pain, and saw Defendant Spears at least twice savagely hitting the small child with Plaintiff’s belt. Plaintiff was shocked, horrified and deeply disturbed by the incident.” -- FACTS. Plus heres 4 different articles.. Tony barreto an ex bodyguard (not the one she assaulted) saw her frequently doing coke. The pop star is at the Promises Malibu drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in Southern California, battling an undisclosed addiction. Her ex, Kevin Federline, reportedly visited her on the weekend with their young sons. Here's another article.. According to the newspaper, Alexander claims he once had a drug-fueled threesome with Spears and a female dancer and that he had trouble keeping up with her drug use. He says Spears almost had a fatal overdose on pure ecstasy, while they partied in a Las Vegas nightclub. "We used ecstasy at night to party and cocaine during the day to stay awake," Alexander said. "Then we would take downers like Valium or Vicodin to come down and rest … She definitely had a problem with drugs when we were together and that was three years ago." Alexander says things got scary when the singer ended up passed out in a shower, lifeless. I took her into the bathroom and threw her in the shower," he said. "She was unconscious. She tripped and fell. I was trying to hold her up and speak to her. She wasn't moving … I remember looking down at her all crumpled in the tub with the water coming down. She looked so white and lifeless. I thought she was dead .'"Britney Spears' first husband says he witnessed the singer abusing cocaine and nearly overdosing on ecstasy three years ago, according to excerpts of an interview printed in the New York Daily. Video taken shortly before Spears checked into rehab for a third time is an example of how the pop star has been trapped in a downward spiral. Another article from 2011... William Spears also told Britain's The Sun newspaper she went “buck-wild” when she turned 18, snorting cocaine on her birthday. “She has tried just about everything - cocaine, crystal meth, ecstasy," he added. “I’m not just a family friend or someone who claims to know them. I was there every day, working with them. I have seen all the terrible things happen.” He revealed Britney began smoking marijuana at age 14 - but "it got worse when she got famous and she found out that people would do what she wanted them to". “She is a ruthless little thing, make no mistake. Nobody controls her. She bosses everyone around her," he said. He continued: “The drugs and the alcohol helped her cope with the pressure - helped her to escape from reality. “We thought maybe getting married and having kids would help her settle down but it was quite the opposite.” William believes Britney's demise was inevitable. “Britney is in an unstable state of mind now and there is nothing anyone can do about it. She is not listening to anybody," he said. “She has fired all the people around her who cared because she simply doesn’t want people to tell her to stop doing the things she is doing. “If people think she has reached the bottom, they are very wrong. Suicide is the bottom line for Britney.” Britney Spears didn’t shave her head in a fit of rage - she did it so there would be no way to trace her drug use, a lawyer for her former manager claimed in court. Joseph Schleimer opened Sam Lutfi’s libel case against Spears’ parents and conservators by showing dramatic photos of the pop superstar with a shaved head and striking an SUV with an umbrella. Schleimer suggested to the LA jury that Spears was afraid a judge would order a test of her hair. If drugs were found, the judge could take away her two sons and give custody to ex-husband Kevin Federline. Schleimer claimed Lutfi tried to save the meth-addled Spears from a mental breakdown but lost control - and was blamed for her being hospitalized and placed under a court-ordered conservator. “My client was made a scapegoat for drug abuse and erratic behavior of Britney Spears,” Schleimer said in his opening remarks Thursday. she was also sued for harrasment and lost in 2011: "Flores is suing Spears's conservators, her father, Jamie Spears, and her lawyer, Andrew Wallet, for an unspecified amount for "psychological damage, anxiety, depression and insomnia" Flores suffered because of "repeated unwanted sexual advances" by Spears. In the original complaint filed last September and obtained by TMZ, Flores, who was often assigned to Spears' home, claims the singer repeatedly and intentionally exposed herself in front of him. On one occasion, he alleges, Spears, wearing a white lace see-through dress, dropped her cigarette lighter on the floor, bent over to get it and "thereby exposed her uncovered genitals." Flores claims he felt "shock and disgust." On another occasion, Flores says he entered Spears bedroom and found her "completely nude." After an awkward silence in which Spears stood naked in front of Flores, he asked her if she needed anything and she replied two bottles of 7 Up, the lawsuit reads. Flores alleges that the pop star engaged in several sexual acts, including intercourse, in front of him. Moreover, he claims that Spears was "loudly having sexual intercourse" while her two young sons, Jayden and Sean, were in the same hotel suite.

I’m reading it again to see anything I may have missed when listening. I’m surprised there weren’t any pictures in the book, but then with how much she’s been under a microscope I don’t blame her for not adding any. I cried when I heard about her fighting to see her babies and feeling so alone and full of grief. The head shaving was infamous and was plastered all over magazine covers and I’m ashamed to say as at that time I ate it all up. I’m glad she has a voice after 13 years of being silenced. The depressing thing about this outside of the personal story is that the entire US system of conservatorship is and perhaps always has been badly broken. While guardianship of some form is essential its current implementation is rife with abusive, with no real idea of just how many cases just like Britneys are going on as we type. In just one report they found hundreds of cases of abuse and millions of dollars stolen, almost always from the elderly and infirm who are never given much in the way of media attention. There have been a bunch of efforts to change it across the US but progress has evidently been slow and the one bill that Im aware of showing up in the capitol appeared to just fall through once 'Free Britney' fell out of the lime light.

Britney herself even said she isn’t trying to piss anyone off and she just wants people to know the truth about what she’s been through. Any criticism the people who exploited and mistreated her are getting, it’s well-deserved. Obviously Britney is not a perfect woman but she never deserved any of this. I know there’s thousands of people going through way worse in this world, but the way she was treated was unacceptable. All she wants is for people to know the truth about everything. She deserves to be heard and not be criticized for it.

U r just a person like everyone else. So I can pray 4 u as I can pray 4 anyone else. And for the record I don't care if u gain weight, still love u & glad u r standing up 4 yourself & will still love your music - u don't have to be all about sex - just sing what "u" want.

I finished the audio yesterday and it was great! I was never a Britney fan but I think I am now. I would never have had the strength to get through what she had to go through..over and over again! But her voice is bad so I was thankful for Michelle Williams, who did indeed a great job. 5/5 stars for me

As someone who is such a big fan of her, I could really tell how this was written in her voice. I just really admire her as a person, and how she spoke about the positive people in her life, and even the people who hurt her. I don't remember a time without Britney Spears being a household name, and how she was painted in the press was atrocious. I remember seeing magazines and paparazzi videos of her being swarmed, and I used to wonder how that was even legal. And then one day she just.... disappeared from the media, and started pushing out stuff we could tell wasn't.... her. So when I read "I am Britney Spears now" I was so angry. Because as a fan, we're not stupid, we noticed this stuff. I am so so happy she is free now.

I work with people that have guardianships/conservatorships put in place and this is why I hate when families take on that role. Not saying she did or did not need it back in 2007 when it was put in place, but having a family member take that role rarely ends well. It usually goes one of two ways: 1) family takes absolute advantage of the person (as in Britney's case) or 2) family doesn't want to make the necessary decisions and be the "bad guy." In both cases, the person suffers. For whatever my opinion is worth, the position should always be held by a 3rd party and there should be a lot more regulations over implementing and duration of a conservatorship.

Great video, I am interested in reading about Britney's life story. Feel like some of the trauma she has dealt with is kinda same to me, with a sense of toxicity and controlling from others at young age.

Britney is about the same age as me, so I grew up watching her on MTV, listening to her on the radio, and buying all the teen magazines with her plastered on the cover, as well as hearing about all the scandals as they happened. I'm definitely going to be picking up this memoir of hers. I'm so glad she's finally able to tell her side of the story. Thanks for giving a bit of insight on it!

as a ghost writer and freelance editor.. i think books that are quick to read.. and raw , simple, unpolished.. staying true to the person's voice makes great book.. i think britney is a natural writer... As basic rule.. write not to impress but to express that what makes great writers relatable.. yes .. the book is readable... indeed... So why wouldnt you read a book that is readable Just my opinion.. Also .. you done a great review! thank you! You're enjoyable to listen to and not dragging...Cheers! ✨😊

I had her cds and enjoyed listening to her music. I knew about some of these things, because my mom subscribed to People Magazine and we'd watch Enews. I feel bad for her, but wasn't active like her fans. I'm interested in both her memoir and Paris Hilton's, though.

I'm Generation X, so while many were listening to Britney Spears, I was still listening to grunge bands and found group dancing and "boy bands" very weird and very pink. Thanks for the book review; I might give it a go because what would interest me isn't Britney, the singer, but Britney, the person.

Thanks for your neutral review. As someone who lived through Britney's career and admired her work, listening to her version of the story was hard. I'm still baffled by her parent's behaviour, with the patriarchy and the challenges she had to endure. I'm glad she told us her story and that she's in a better place now. I often had to stop the audiobook to digest what I was reading. I teared up, and it was an uncomfortable reading at times. The writing is not the best, but Michelle did a great job.

One of the most disgusting things about the conservatorship is how apparently Britney "needed it," but was well enough to tour and perform in Las Vegas night after night? Makes no sense, and it's easy to spot out the abuse with this alone! Even if someone thinks that Britney needs the conservatorship, I still can't fathom defending her father and thinking he was acting out of her best interests. I'm not even a Britney "stan" or anything like that, but I have always felt a tremendous amount of sympathy for her. Yeah, the knife video was weird ... But I think that if I lived the life that she has, I'd probably seem a little "off," too.

I remember hearing people say her shimmering bikini at a concert was inappropriate. that people called her an idiot for dumping Justin and marrying that loser Kevin Federline who was a nobody and took everything from her. Then she finally shaved her head. Things pretty much went downhill for her after that break up with Justin. Justin was getting back a her through his songs like, 'Cry me a river'.

I was thinking about reading this book. I'm about the same age as Brittney, and I saw a lot of this stuff play out in the media back then. I'm not a fan of hers, but I did support the Free Brittney movement. I guess it wouldn't be a big time investment since it's so short. I'm just not sure if I care that much... 😬
