Born too late for Lego Castle 2008 and too early for the new sets. Born just in time for Lego Kingdoms. Tbh kingdoms was so underrated. I wish it got 2 more years of sets.
@@michaelsmith8028 Kingdoms was definitely a great follow-up to Fantasy Era with the printing and design of the figures and some really great sets. I personally loved 7189 Mill Village Raid and 10223 Joust, and of course the battle packs were a great way to build your army!
Underrated but 2005 - second phase of Knights Kingdom II. The redesign of the heroes was great to have the printed armour and classic shields. Both sides siege towers are amazing. Then of course all the shadow knight sets; Dark Fortress Landing, Scorpion Prison Cave (a giant ridable scorpion what not to love), and the big one Vladek's Dark Fortress!
@@TipperProject it took me a while to come around on Knights Kingdom 2, and the addition of Adric, Kentis, Karzon and Dracus not only expanded the story, but added some new figures and crests. I got pretty excited over 8813 Battle at the Pass for the number of figures, the number of accessories, and the reintroduction of the tournament helmet.
I cannot agree more! The 1990's were PEAK! I recently ordered the Black Knight's Castle set, and cannot wait to build it. It's truly my favorite castle set ever! (Aside from the 2022 Lion Castle obviously)
It is not all bad. Just a horrible lack of sets is the main problem. But the amount of useful parts we have available is massively increased, the sets that we do get are certainly great and finally we get rare gems such as the D&D CMF that allows for a lot of minifigure customization.
Lego kingdoms was 14 years ago. 3 million people die each year on earth. 42 million people have died since lego made an f'ing castle theme out of Chinese plastic. Fromsoft has released 6 souls games since then.
As a MOC builder, I think 2021-present days are easily the best years for LEGO castle, which might be a bit of a controversy. Ideas Blacksmith, Lion Knights Castle, Viking Village, Town Square, and all of the major factions available on PAB make these years my favorite.
Wolfpack are probably my favourite faction. I've got 2 wolfpack carts and the wolfpack castle. Lovely little set. I've also got the black kings castle from the same year, possibly the best castle ever. That little yellow building off to the side is peak, the well in the middle, and that entrance. Great set.
Thank you for the clear, straightforward "tutorial" on the Lego Castle line for us newbies. I'm not new to Lego (about 2010 on) but my Castle collection just started with the recent Lion Knights Castle, Creator Medieval Castle (3-in-1 -- got couple for expansion ), and Medieval Town Square (got pretty much everything related -- including GWPs). I also just pre-ordered my first Bricklink Designer Program set: Castle in the Forest. I wish Lego would make smaller, more affordable "supplemental" Castle theme sets for expansion like they used to. I wish the same with trains/railroad theme -- they used to offer single train cars -- again, for affordability and expansion one-at-a-time. I don't think they'd lose money.
1992 is a great choice, but I'd go 2 years later for Dragon Masters. It's the first "good guy" faction that wasn't your average knights (being led by Majisto rather than a king, more of a fantasy faction than most Castle themes at the time), Wolfpack and Dark Forest, the latter of which was a revival of the old Forestmen theme so that's fun.
The 2008 troll siege tower was my first Castle set, so the fantasy era definitely kickstarted my love of everything castles and fantasy (especially in lego)
Great summery of best eras for Lego Castle! I agree, it's hard to beat the early 90s. Hopefully Lego listens to the suggestions you make - I would definitely get my hands on a modern wolfpack set. No brainer indeed!
I had the Tower Raid set when I was a kid and it was honestly the best thing ever! A good selection of pieces to build both custom medieval buildings but also vehicles from. Also picked up the pieces for it from my parents a couple of days ago so I might just try rebuilding it now.
I think LEGO should make a remake of the dragon knights castle, maybe they would turn the black dragon statue into a real dragon? -Love and support from Norway, pls make more costumizing cmf videos (Series 25, 26). Was seeking after the medieval characters, got many else to :/ XD
I absolutely adore the older castle sets and I own a few of them from when I was a tiny lad, but looking back now and comparing them to the likes of LKC, or some of the rebrickable castle MOCs, they look incredibly empty and apart from the minifigures, not very alive. Having castles come completely or at least partially furnished is such a massive upgrade and it increases playability by a massive amount too, for those that are into that. Sweet overview for sure, my favorite out of these is Wolfpack year, it seems to come in a style that I do not own, nor know very well.
1992 was the last year of my initial interest in Lego. I aged out right before Dragon Masters came out. I still have the Black Knight's Castle and the Wolfpack Tower and have spent plenty of time in the last couple years modifying them.
You make a good case for 1992! I had all of those sets except the big castle. I wish I'd kept them together, they're long gone now, but I guess I got them at the right time. :)
Never really thought about which year could be the best specifically, but I'd say your picks are really good ones. I'd probably also choose 2010 because I absolutely love the style of Kingdoms, but I understand the argument that the castle design may have gotten a bit repetitive by then. Great video as always Goldfyre!
I’m one of the older AFOLs that doesn’t have room for a lot of the wackiness of Fantasy Era. Minifigs are great and the overall concept really works. Some of the builds are just a little too campy for me. (Looking at you, Skeleton Tower) I do think it’d have a lot of potential if revisited these days, but I think D&D is sitting on that throne at the moment, which works for me. Great video. Loved seeing the discussion around 84-92. That was my era as a kid and it was awesome!
As a 40 year old, I'm a big fan of the fantasy era. What's not to like? They had some fun with that line. The two best castles are Black Monarch's Castle (1988) and the 1992 Black Knight s Castle you featured. I bought the 1992 castle in 2019 before prices exploded, fortunately.
I may be 31 and a huge Lego castle fan ( while I absolutely love the Fright Knights) I really enjoyed almost every Lego castle theme that Lego released. I do think my favorite is the fantasy era mostly due to me being a huge Fantasy fan and just I would always pretend that the lion knights or crown knights just had to hold off the huge forces of evil. Maybe it's just me but I just love anything Lego Castle lol I do wish Lego fully brought it back as it's own theme again
Growing up my best friend had the Wolfpack Tower and I thought he was the luckiest Kid ever. I still rank that as one of my favourite nostalgia sets, especially with the ghost character included 👻
I was an early 80s kid growing up with castle lego. mid 90s I was through with highschool. 2000s I was starting a family and paying bills. When I had kids I started getting lego again 2008-2014 (wooo kingdoms really were nice) then I got busy with more work and other things. Then I swung back around and started collecting again starting in 2023. I have to say the quality of the knights, and sets now are way better, but the variety of types available in a given year are pretty bleak. You get falcon knights and lion knights readily available but if you want to get other types its hard or specialized to get (raven knights, fright knights) The thing I find really missing these days are battle packs or small sets with 2-3 figs in it. the larger sets put the older sets to shame id say. That blacksmith set was soooo nice. Scale is big, and I liked that.
I also have the Sea Serpent, which I got for Christmas a few years ago. I think it's one of the best Black Knight sets, especially now, since it's much cheaper than the castles. It has 3 Black Knight figures, 6 dragon shields, the printed flag, and the sail. I hope Lego makes a remake of the Black Knights, but I hope it's not a GWP.
Remaking that set as a MOC or have Lego redesign it as a set would be amazing. If they can give the same quality as we had with the Blacktron Cruiser or Eldorado Fortress, I would buy it in a heartbeat.
It seems like the best choice out of the Black Knight sets to remake, and the Medieval Town Square had a letter with the Black Knights logo in it. They’ve already remade the rest of the first 5 factions.
Nice vid and i also want to buy the lego black knights castle sometime also i have a few new stopmotions on my channel and i would like to see your stopmotions when you make them 😁
As an older lego fan (I'm 41) i not only agree that 1992 was the best year for castle (i should know; i was there) but i would like to say that i absolutely loved fantasy era castle and would easily say that 2008 was the second best year. Fantasy era brought back so many great classic elements that were missing from Knights Kingdom and adding fantasy elements like skeletons, dragons, trolls and dwarves was everything i had ever dreamed about. I remember it being 1996 and i wanted orcs for my knights to fight, but the closest i had were my pirates.
Of course you think it was peak! You were 9 then, so you grew up with those older sets. I think the fantasy era castle sets were peak because that's what I grew up with.
Here's how I classified the old and new Lego sets from the late 20th century to today: the first age - black knights, Wolfpack, etc. The second age - 2008 sets. The third age - the king's lion knights (red and white/blue and white) and the dragon knights (green and black/red and black). My favorite year of Lego Castle sets is the third age!
I'm really pessimistic about that. LEGO seems to have found a working formula, with releasing big expensive castle sets for adult collectors, and it's not looking like they want to change that. Maybe the new factions they designed for that ideas set will once get their own wave, but I doubt it
We can always hope. I think they will sell well, seeing the medieval community is quite large. We saw how popular the D&D CMF was, that was in large part due to the castle fans picking it up.
Would love to hear your thoughts on NexoKnights! I HATED them when they released. I'm not a fan of StarWars or future themes. These days however, I've been growing more fond of NexoKnights. The baddies are some of the coolest (and goofiest) minifigures for MOCs. You can definitely "de-futurize" them a bit to fit more realm of Medieval fantasy. Keep up the great work, love your videos!
Honestly, I was thinking for a while that Lego should reintroduce the Lego castle theme, and while Im still not completely against it, I would prefer adventure, space, or pirate to make a comeback. Space and Adventure have plenty of untapped potential and variety, and Lego Pirate has my preferred fortresses, cities, weaponry, and vehicles to Castle (I just like Mediterranean architecture and Big sail boats).... I still really want to pick up the lion knights castle and village though.
If I'd have to pick one wave of Castle Sets to have, I'd personally pick the Fantasy Era While it's incredibly obvious as to one reason why if you just so happen to look at my pfp, I like fantasy creature armies more than human armies, except if they have sick-ass gear. I love orcs, I love dwarves, and I love skeletons, and I like the Crown Knights because blue is my third favorite color Unlike any castle sets ever since, and just like Ninjago, the Fantasys ets are just so out-there and despite not owning any of them, I really like them for that
Ok I’m here to piss on the parade. My word, I look at all this old stuff and think, Jiminy Cricket’s Christmas, Lego has gotten so much better since I was a kid. The best year was 2021, release of the Medieval Blacksmith 21325, and even that set had problems that I had to fix. Geez Lego! 😂 We are in the golden age of Lego right now. They’re still releasing shit builds, but the pieces and colors are amazing. Tons to create your own MOCs. Love that you can get Black Falcons, Forestmen and Wolfpack minifigs on PAB. Smart move finally from Lego. Lion Knights suck
I totally agree these sets don't hold up today compared to stuff like the lion knights castle & medieval town square. So when i compare them i'm comparing them to what was out at the time
@@Goldfyre most definitely!! It was a great time being an ignorant kid who didn’t know any better. Boy, those were the days! Being an adult is tough, man! At least we got Lego still! 🍻 😂
