Basically, he used all the language of kingship in those days. Divine right, God's will, the whole nine yards. He may not have liked to be called a king, but he was an absolute monarch all the same.
We're glad you like these videos and have found them useful. We're currently concentrating on British History, but we might look to broaden the scope of the videos to consider Europe in the future. Watch this space.....
He was more powerful than any king. In fact, the reason many wanted him to take the crown was since everyone knew the limits on a king’s power, but there were no such limits on the power of a lord-protector.
It seems interesting to me that someone like Cromwell could both believe in a literal interpretation of the Bible and also not support the divine right of kings, since in the Bible God gives his blessing to several kings like Solomon. It seems to me that if you're an atheist you can't justify the divine right of kings and be intellectually honest, but if you're a literal-minded Christian you can't NOT justify it and be intellectually consistent.
No, that was Harry and Meghan. Richard Cromwell was an MP as was his younger brother Henry but they weren’t given royal titles. Though, of course Richard succeeded his father as head of state in the same manner of Kings. Like Oliver he became known as ‘His highness’.
