St Patrick - Patron saint of Ireland. Who was he? What did he do, and where was he from?
Legend has it Patrick banished the snakes from Ireland but what what do we actually know bout him?
Follow my adventures as I travel through the landscapes and history of Scotland. I make quick, quirky and (hopefully) funny content about Scotland's past, people and scenery.
I look for the hidden stories, forgotten people and beautiful scenery of Scotland and try to find the funny in the darkness, obscurity and occasional absurdity of our history.

Everyone is Irish on St Patrick's day, unless you're Scottish, then you're definitely still Scottish!

Happy St. Paddy's Day. I was in Northern Ireland on St. Patrick's Day 1975 & I was surprised that it wasn't a big deal there. Great storytelling as usual.

I have to wear my orange with my green on St Patrick's. My Alexander family came from northern Ireland but Americans only know about the green. Unity is good! One of my favorite places in Scotland is Iona: So many MacDonalds buried there. Uisge Beatha! Sliante! 🇮🇪🇺🇲🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

As an ex-pat New Yorker, I can vouch for the fact that St Patrick's Day is celebrated with serious gusto in this town, even by this Norwegian!!

I learned this when I was a wee lassie from my Scottish Grandfather. Also, St. Patrick's colour was Blue. With my Grandmother being English, I also learned they were at odds with the Irish, and would wear orange on his day, not green.

That’s interesting. Sounds like the orange order.

Love your humor. So if he was enslaved by Irish and then founded a Catholic church, he could have been Irish, Scottish and Viking. I do still enjoy finding 4 leaf 🍀 though. Glad I wasn't pinched today.

hmmm sheep. We are not farmers or ranchers (US, can you tell?) We did, like a couple of over grown city kids, attempt to learn to herd livestock using dogs. Sheep, ducks, and cattle in mostly paddock trials, not much in the way of field trials like in Scotland. Herding dogs have a sense of humor. Even the Border Collies, though most of the group had Australian Shepherds. Shall I tell the sheep surfing story? Why not. We were attempting to herd 5 sheep up and down a fenced pasture. This one guy was not communicating with his dog very well. Purely by accident, the dog managed to get the head ewe running under her owner. He was pushed up on the ewe's back and off they went down the pasture. The dog stopped, obviously astonished, then bounced along keeping the fun going until the guy fell off. Some other people took their turns. And it was this pair again. The dog lined up the sheep very deliberately, and pushed a sheep under the dog's owner. Off they went, the dog following and obviously laughing at the owner on the sheep. A new sport was born.
@scotlandunplugged
@scotlandunplugged Год назад
Haha. Sheep dogs are far too clever. We had one that used to try to get behind the TV when the sheep dog trials were on TV. Saying that, his cleverness actually saved my skin when he let my parents know there was a fire in the house.

Really loved this. I had no idea he was from Scotland. As a side topic.. I’d love to here you thoughts on the differences between the Scots and the Irish, for comparison not judgment.
@scotlandunplugged
@scotlandunplugged Год назад
Hmmm. Interesting question. I’d say we’re not massively different. The Irish have beaten us in the accent stakes though. 🤔

I’ve heard that that “snakes” were the Druids. Take it with a grain or two of salt, it’s something I’ve heard in pagan circles.
