the worst thing on this: she totally ruined the most beautiful tennis moment everyone dreams of - winning a slam. Serena made it about herself, the crowd BOOed when the ceremony started and poor Naomi cried like she committed a crime, not won a slam. No one will give her back the moment of ultimate happiness of winning a maiden slam, it is ruined forever. SHAME.

#1) Ramos saw the coach making a clear "coaching" gesture. So if you are the ref and you know that is a violation, would you let it go? If you are a person of integrity that has vowed to uphold the rules, I doubt it. It may very well be that Serena did not "receive" coaching from the gesture, but as a ref, you have to call what you see. Also, giving a warning for coaching is not the same thing as calling someone a cheater. The call the ref made was not based on whether he thought cheating was happening, but that he saw a clear coaching signal. This was the 1st violation. Serena chose to be a victim here by equating a coaching violation to being called a cheater. #2) Serena smashed her racket. This is the second violation and Ramos had to give the opponent a point. #3) Serena maligned Ramos character by calling him a thief and a liar. I have read the "verbal abuse" rule and this statement alone meets the criteria. If you don't believe me, go read it. This is the 3rd violation. Because the verbal abuse came after 2 code violations, Ramos awarded the opponent a game. I've heard many people say that no man has ever lost a game because of verbal abuse. This might be true but the verbal abuse would have to come after 2 code violations. Is anyone aware of a man abusing the ref after the 2nd code violation? In summary, what I think started the downward spiral is that Serena believed she was a victim. She took the "coaching" warning as an attack on her character and therefore she was prepared to fight no matter what it led to. Her attack on the ref was awful on many levels. I know I would feel bullied if she talked to me that way. Ramos is known for being a stern ref to men and women. For Serena to summarily believe and accuse Ramos of sexism is judgmental and misplaced. Serena broke the rules. Rather than taking ownership of that, she points fingers at others. Victim-hood at its finest.

I think there are a lot of people now defending Serena (even though she was clearly in the wrong) in order to avoid being called sexist and/or racist. Mary Carillo is 110% correct about this and Megan Greenwell is 110% incorrect. Mary has it nailed: The chair umpire, Carlos Ramos, was consistently and strictly following the ITF Rulebook. He has been backed up in his refereeing by the USTA and ITF. The first code violation was real; Morataglu admitted after the match that _"100%, I was coaching"._ That was code violation 1. Smashing the racket, which she did not have to do, Racket Abuse, was Code Violation 2. Calling the umpire a _"liar and thief"_ was verbal abuse was Code Violation 3 acc. to ITF Regulations, Sec. G: *"For the purposes of this Rule, verbal abuse is defined as a statement about an official, opponent, sponsor, spectator or other person that **_implies dishonesty or is derogatory, insulting or otherwise abusive._* Calling the chair umpire a liar and a thief impugns his objectivity and implies dishonesty; that is a clear Verbal Abuse code violation. The regs are right there in black & white. The regulations also state in B&W, for a third code violation, the player forfeits a game. Lindsey Davenport, in calling the match with Mary Carillo, even pointed out BEFORE Williams committed the 3rd code violation: _"She better watch her emotions, or she will lose a game for another code violation"_ Those are the rules; but Williams does not want the regulations to apply to her, just as in 2009, when she was defaulted for threatening to ram a tennis ball down a line judge's throat for calling a foot fault. Kudos to Mary Carillo for calling this one correctly.

Thanks, Nick Gould. I'm a scientist, and we're pretty driven by common sense and facts. And data. Cheers!
@keithanthony974
@keithanthony974 5 лет назад
You may be a scientist, but I'm pretty sure that the scientific method requires accurate data and relevant analysis.. For code violation 1, did you read the rule? It's irrelevant what Mouratoglou, note spelling, admitted. What's relevant is what the rule states. It requires that the player "receive coaching", and that never happened. So both you and Ramos are wrong. Frustration with that bad call and the difficulty of the match, led to code violation 2, which is no big deal. It happens all the time but was a legitimate call. Code violation 3. despite your italics and bold type, is merely about abuse, which happens on a regular basis, and Nadal did make a smilar statement to Ramos without any repercussion, no code violation called. Two of those 3 calls should never have been made, and were it not for the bad first call, the third wouldn't have happened. In any event, another umpire would have recognised that she was quite stressed at that point and wouldn't have called the third code violation. Especially in a grand slam final. So your analysis really doesn't reflect logic or fact. It reflects someone with an opinion shoehorning the facts to fit it. So Serena threatened to ram the ball down someone's throat once? Yeah, we all know that, because it's probably the only other example you can find. But I could find hundreds of examples of abusive and offensive conduct and comments made by players you doubtless admire and say nothing about. Which only goes to support my earlier conclusion of your scientific method. Perhaps getting a wider sample and examining the data in a neutral environment might help. IF you're a scientist, that is.
@stephenscharf6293
@stephenscharf6293 5 лет назад
Keith Anthony: I did read the rules, and the player did receive coaching because it was _provided_ by Mouratoglou and he admitted that, "100%, I was coaching", *on-air.* Ramos saw and called it correctly; its on video. Regardless, this entire debacle would have not happened if Serena could have actually controlled her emotions after being broken and smashing her racket on the court. But, she couldn't. This was entirely her own fault; no different than when she exploded emotionally in 2009, where she was fined $50,000 for threatening a line judge, or in 2011 against Chair Umpire Eva Asderaki. She has a documented history of this exact same behavior. And as it comes to accurate data and relevant analysis, as a Design for Six Sigma Black Belt, I used to teach statistics to scientists and engineers. Want to have a chat about ANOVA, and that the F-statistic is derived from dividing the Mean Square of the Factor by the Mean Square of the Error terms? Do you have papers published as first author in the _Proceedings of the National Academy of the Sciences?_ I do, so respectfully, I don't need a lesson in the scientific method.
@keithanthony974
@keithanthony974 5 лет назад
Stephen Scharf = I get it, you don't know the meaning of "receive". Let me help you out, it's not a matter of someone "providing", it's a matter of someone "getting". The rule states - "Players shall not receive coaching during a match (including the warm-up). Communications of any kind, audible or visible, between a player and a coach may be construed as coaching." See that bit about "between a player and a coach"? Yep, it means it takes two to tango. "Provision" as you term it, isn't in there. Mouratoglou also admitted that Serena didn't see it. Get the point? Ramos, and you, are both wrong. Osaka definitely did get it, as in coaching, but that doesn't fit the script, I guess. It's easy for you to then brush it over and say airily "regardless, it's her fault". You weren't the one being robbed or accused, and it wasn't your emotional baggage in a difficult match. You just have a perspective, and it's negative. 2009 is all you guys can reference to back up that perspective, despite the thousands of matches she's played before and since. But if I made a list of all the players who've abused coaches, umpires and others regularly throughout the period, you wouldn't even remember the incidents, because really, it's not about what she did, it's about who she is, right? Perhaps you ought to apply some of that analysis of variance to the data at hand, instead of focusing on a very, very, limited population. Get those mean squares out. And yes, I could talk ANOVA, but I'm a lawyer, and I identify whether the experts actually do know what they're talking about. You do have it somewhere in your data set that Serena is the reason that Hawkeye is used, right? Because she was robbed blind in a match against Capriati that was so egregious they brought in the technology. Got any comments on her reaction to that? Or on Capriati? Who regularly abused umpires and didn't get called on it? No, didn't think so.

MatchstalkMan - Actually, you're not being coached if you don't see it and don't act on it. Which was her point. Additionally, coaching is a thing that happens in nearly every game you've ever watched on tv, but how many of those have you seen players warned for? That's right, none. Slamming rackets happens in every tournament. So what? Calling the referee a thief for docking a point for something she didn't do sounds about right to me. But then, why let the truth get in the way of a good biased perception? Keep right on, you're in plenty of equally dumb company.

@@keithanthony974 How do you know she didn't see it and didn't act on it? She could be lying. Who other than Serena Williams constantly slams their racket down on the ground after losing? Mary Carillo is absolutely correct. I have no idea who the other commentator is or why her opinion is relevant to tennis. The reason Serena blows up at the US Open is because the tournament officials at the French and Wimbledon do not put up with this crap. The French Open implemented a dress code after Serena came to one of her matches dressed in a catsuit. Serena can get away with her abuse in New York because you have American fans rooting for Serena to win the American national championship against foreign players, like Kim Clijsters in 2009, Samantha Stosur in 2011, and now against Naomi Osaka. All of these times Serena acted in the same aggressive manner.

I am a former certified Swiss Davis Cup umpire with a MIPTC (Men International Professional Tennis Circuit) license. I herewith state that Carlos Ramos did NOTHING wrong during the entire 2018 US Open woman's final. However, the way Serena Williams behaved was pathetic, arrogant and disgraceful. After all, she was the one who owed an apology, to the talented and brave Naomi Osaka who dominated her throughout the entire match, and whose victory she managed to sully. Serena's behaviour reflected her tantrum against a lineswoman, some years ago, in the same event, during her match against Kim Clysters.

Serena is a bad loser. Tim Henman, the nicest English gentleman in tennis, once accidently hit a ballsgirl. He was immediately defaulted, and he apologised to the girl, and to his fans, and to the spectators. Now that was class. John MacEnroe got defaulted in 1991 in Australa, for saying much less that causing the umpire of being a cheat and thief. Serena is a bully, and has a reputation for being one. She lied through her teeth when arguing, as her coach later admitted that he was coaching her. And she is not even embarassed. She continued the tirade in the press conference, again taking away from Osaka. No class at all. This is why Federer remains the greatest tennis player in history.
@gkgam3r

in all honesty Henman and his teammate (was a doubles right?) pleaded his case like crazy to the umpire and supervisor if I remember correctly, that was not the greatest display of class in my opinion. Not to mention he hit the ball in anger after an unforced error and the ball went flying to that ballgirl hitting her pretty hard. Not very classy to begin with... But I am 100% with you on how Serena shat the bed big time against Naomi Osaka who should be the one everyone talks about...

when you think you are entitled to anything you want then everything is a "double standard" - but the truth is plenty of male players had game penalties for LESS than what she did. The umpire went strictly by the rules. You can't simply say "I wasn't being coached" - especially when the coach admits he was indeed coaching - in the end, when you play a game you AGREE to abide by the rules, period, even when they work against you. The umpire gave the first warning to the coaching, the point for the racket and the game for verbal abuse. All by the book.

To be a champion, behave like a champion. Serena's behaviour has no excuse, she should have been thrown off court immediately, as was done previously (match against Kim Clijsters). This "example" is simply unfit for people watched to and adored by so many kids. Go tell your kid he or she has to behave and be correct in sports after such a display. It was furthermore totally unfair towards her opponent. I don't see what the fact she's not allowed to wear her riduculuos panter suite next time on Roland Garros has anything to do with it. I admire her talent and the hard work and dedication that yielded her so many results. But it still doesn't place her above others. Would others loose it to? Probably. But that still doesn't make it a wrong call.

It's lose, not loose. Loose is what your mouth is, and biased is what your brain is. If I had young kids playing sports, Serena is precisely the model I'd want them to follow. Calling violations is entirely transparent. Ramos is certifiably one of the best in professional tennis. This kerfuffle was all about behavior. Bad behavior on Williams' part. She was overweight, out of shape, and losing for the second time by Osaka. Williams, a lifelong loudmouth on the court, has always been a bully and crybaby. Osaka enjoyed the considerable advantage of coaching by Williams' former hitting partner. Osaka for her part needs to grow up and own the world she now circulates in. What a child actress!

We're not much for professional tennis in our humble shop, but we couldn't help but notice something about the weekend's U.S. Open women's championship match. Stop us if you've heard this before: A woman who thought she was entitled to win was credibly accused of cheating during the contest, which she then turned into a tirade about her own supposed victimhood at the hands of those who are allegedly sexist. Her supporters then turned into a rabid mob, heckling and booing the victor, who not only deserved to win but did so fair and square. The media rallied to her defense, robbing the victor of the moment of triumph. But enough about the 2016 election. We'll leave debating the rules of tennis to others, but suffice it to say that Serena Williams, in the words of Rich Lowry, "behaved shamefully" and showed an "appalling lack of grace." Her coach admitted to the infraction that led to a penalty, but Williams turned the match into a pathetic spectacle of rage, complete with smashing her racket (again) and leaving the 20-year-old, first-time winner, Naomi Osaka, not only in tears on the podium but literally apologizing for her win. After Williams's reprehensible behavior on the court (for which she was fined $17,000), she parlayed her "victim" status into a fight for social justice. "I'm here fighting for women's rights and for women's equality and for all kinds of stuff." And the Leftmedia jumped to her defense, adding that things are even worse for black women, just to throw race in the mix. It's evidently fine to discriminate against Asian women, however. Osaka, the victor overshadowed in this fiasco, is Haitian-Japanese. A final thought. Williams is insisting she's an aggrieved victim despite having brought great notoriety to women's tennis with her dozens of titles, being worth about $180 million, and having her very own clothing collection at none other than Nike. For some reason that reminds us of another pouting athlete... Wanna profit from being an offensive jerk? Just do it.

It's not Ramos calling out Serena that was the problem but it's the way she reacted to it. If She could have just stomached the first warning and played calmly and nothing would have gone wrong. At the end of the day, the umpire was acting within the rules but nobody can say the same about Serena

Thank you, Mary, for your brave comments! Your analysis is correct. Serena created that toxic environment, and I feel very bad for Naomi. I also remember the 2009 incident involving Serena and that poor little linesman. You aid at the time that Serena deserved a one year suspension, the she was fined only $10,000. You were brave then, as well. Had she been suspended for a year, Serena would have learned her lesson, and we would not have had a repeat offender last Saturday.

Her temper out of control. She's so aggressive with extreme mood swings. I mean come on she's able to scream at the umpire, smash her racket, cry like a baby and give the sweetest hug all within minutes... Long term steroid abuse?

You know she could have not smashed her racket and yelled at the ref, and then you know what? Nothing would have happened, just like every soccer player out there who gets a yellow card in a game. You get a warning, normal people take the warning and are more cautious. BTW, Patriots got a $1 million fine and lost 1st round draft for doing the same thing Serena did

Greenwell refers to cases of men getting not getting penalties for similar offenses, but without giving any details. She ignores the fact that the penalty depends not on the particulars of the code violation, but on whether it is the first, second, or third violation. Players rarely forfeit a game because when they have two code violations they stop causing trouble.
