I remember watching this series and thinking Bucks were getting screwed. This Sixers Team wasn’t that good of a team. The NBA wanted the reigning MVP to the Finals. Plain and simple.

I was a 13 year old kid in Milwaukee. That series was super fixed. They jobbed the Bucks. The Bucks ran the gauntlet on the league, almost clean sweeping every single team in the Western Conference. The Bucks would have given the Fakers a huge battle and David Stern was not about to have the smallest media market in the league do that to the Fakers.

My dad and I went to all of the games in Milwaukee and I remember just getting pissed at how bad these refs were. Our franchise only has 1 ring and they took the chance of another one away from us

You lose credibility when you end your video by saying "The Bucks would have gotten destroyed by the Lakers and we would have missed out on the classic game 1 win by Iverson". The Bucks were much better that year than you give them credit for. They were 8-0 against the top 4 teams in the "top heavy" west. There was also a story out reporting that Shaq and most of the Lakers were relieved that they didn't have to face the Bucks, a sharp shooting run and gun nightmare of a matchup for them. Whether you remember or not, they were actually the 1st team where the phrase "Big 3" was coined. I'm still up in the air as to whether or not this series was fixed, but the foul discrepency and the NBA's obvious love of Iverson are hard to overlook.

The only thing I disagree with is the notion that the Lakers would have "destroyed" the Bucks had they of played them. YOU were cruisn' up until that comment bro. The Lakers had serious match-up problems with the Bucks that year which is why the Bucks swept them. I'm not gonna say that the Bucks would have beaten them, but it would have at least gone six if not seven games. Despite the prejudice of a small-market team, it would have been a far more entertaining series with the Bucks rather than the 76ers.

One thing you missed was that Dikembe Mutombo acquired only 6 fouls that entire series. 6 fouls in 7 games. He averaged 2.5 a game during the regular season and now suddenly averages less then 1 foul per game. In the first round against the Pacers, Dikembe too had 6 fouls in 4 games. Indiana was playing Phillie very tough and could of taken them in the old school shotgun 5 game series; but the NBA would never allow their marketing power to go down to an 8 seed in the 1st round. In the 2nd round Mutombo had 22 fouls in 7 games and in the finals had 23 fouls in 5 games. All the NBA has to do is not call fouls on Mutombo and let him go crazy aggressively on D at will. That was the major difference in the serious. If those numbers don't spell fix I don't know what does. Obviously in the finals when the NBA didn't care to fix to get their dream match up any longer, they took the reigns off the foul restriction and things were back to normal. What a joke.

That game 5 was so sketchy. I remember watching it as a 10 year old before I even considered favoritism by referees, and thought it was a robbery.

The Bucks swepts 3 of the top teams in the west that year, lakers, Spurs and another team i cant remember. Bucks also was the highest scoring offense in the league that year, if u watch each game you will clearly see that were flat out robbed

Been a Bucks fan all my life. Remember that series well, especially 1 particular play late in game 5, in which Ray Allen was about to get a 3 point play. Obviously, the refs didn't call the foul, even though Ray was literally mauled during a layup. Solidified my belief the series was fixed

The series was absolutely fixed. Bucks were called on touch fouls while the 76ers weren't called for contact that was much more egregious.

If the bucks got to see the Lakers in the finals, we might've seen the three point revolution 15 years earlier. Cause that bucks team operated from the outside. This was the start of the peak refs fixing games. The refs cheating the Sacramento kings out of the championship was the peak of it, but the 2001 ECF was absolutely just as bad. All you need to know is that Game 4 was reffed by Dick Bavetta. The same Dick Bavetta who reffed Game 6 2002, who called an unfathomable shot-clock violation against the Jazz in Game 6 of the 98 Finals, who called Indiana for 35 fouls against New York's 16 in Game 6 of the 1999 ECF, and who called the infamous Game 7 of the 2000 Lakers/Blazers series. A few years back, a diligent Bucks fans worked out that Milwaukee fared far worse in games when Bavetta reffed compared to other refs in the period spanning 1991-2008. The reason they fared so much worse under Bavetta was that they lost 16 - that's SIXTEEN - consecutive games when Bavetta reffed between 1999 and 2001. This is noteworthy because this period was the only one between 1991 and 2008 when the Bucks were actually any good - hence why Bavetta was a massive outlier. In case you think this is a coincidence, the Lakers went 16-2 when Bavetta reffed their playoff games between 1997 and 2002. When he didn't ref, they won 61%, when he did they won 89%. Conversely Sacramento when 0-6 when Bavetta reffed, but won 60% of their playoff games when he didn't ref. That's one hell of a discrepancy. The NBA may well have done shady stuff before and since, but that period either side of the millennium was the golden age of crooked refereeing. It's well past time that someone - anyone - with credibility in the media or elsewhere investigated this.

Most of the games, if not all, from this series are available on this site so people should watch those and see for themselves what they think. It is the only time I can ever recall a team claiming a series was fixed while it was still going on.

Yes, it was fixed. I am from Milwaukee and not even a big Bucks fan. But I truly loved that team with Ray Allen, Big Dog, and Cassel. The Bucks had a much better all around team, great mix of offense and defense, and just too many shooters. They were robbed. NBA wanted West Coast vs East Coast per usual. Philly is a bigger city than Milwaukee and AI was a bigger name than anyone on the Bucks. We all knew the Lakers were going to win that year but we got screwed. The refs controlled the key games in the series. They put the Sixers on the free throw line way more to the point that it was ridiculously noticeable. The refs knew who the league wanted on there that year and they helped make it happen.

As a kid i tried to avoided watching the lakers vs the sixer series because i was sure Lakers were going to clobber them. Some how Iverson won game 1 and i had to watch the rest of that series thinking maybe it be competitive but it wasn't. Those other two series with the 2002 Lakers and Kings and the 2006 Heat and Mavericks were more significant because one was a Finals series and the other was a WCF where the Kings actually would have most likely won the championship that season had they took game 6
