I was lucky enough to meet JPR on the plane back from South Africa after the world cup. I was the last one to board the flight and the overhead lockers were full. Those were special years for rugby union in the UK and when the game was amateur as well. Such talents on display here: Edwards, Duckham, Gibson, Slattery, Quinnell, Bennett and , of course, JPR. @markcheckley3715

It has become very akin to Rugby League. In the amateur era it was more difficult, because of the rules and interpretation thereof, to recycle the ball. Second phase possession was the Holy Grail, third and subsequent phases rarely happened. Thus there was the incentive to do something creative with the ball, often off the set piece, when you actually had it. Add to that the very real possibility of the occasional heel against the head and there was a recipe for a more creative game. In the professional era it is possible to retain possession for many phases and many more minutes. This provides an incentive to "battering ram" for a few yards and set up again (as per Rugby League) without risking loss of possession. It's not the players - who are as skilled as at any time in the game's history, and better trained in the professional era - nor is it the fact that they are getting paid. It's the rules and the refereeing at the breakdown that is primarily responsible, in my view, for a less creative game.

Yes, in today's time Gibson would have gone to ground, had a few seconds to 'adjust' so he could place the ball back toward his teammates, and a phony ruck would have ensued. The last time I played, and it was seven years ago in an over 50s, match, I got tackled similarly and just pushed the ball behind me as I fell, hoping my support would pick up the ball. I do referee, and have to allow for these "adjustments" which would have been penalized years ago for hanging on to the ball on the ground.

Ireland lucky enough to have an English blonde bombshell play for them many years later: Simon Geoghan. I watched him play in Lansdowne Road with my then girlfriend (who had a MASSIVE crush on him) and who was shouting the whole time to, "Give the ball to Simon! Give the ball to Simon!" When he was eventually passed the ball, he scored a wonderful try and one of the alikadoos who had been rather dismissive of my girlfriend's exhortations turmed to her and said, "Well, it looks like you were right!"

It is also worth remembering that all these people were 100% amateurs with full time jobs in something else. The Barbarians were a scratch team that was never the same and barely practiced together before a game. They were basically reliant on the players’ individual skill and instinct.

Simply outstanding teamwork, especially against one of the most formidable teams in the world, the mighty Kiwis. Rugby today, is too physical, where players have to be built like giants, to even stand a chance of survival. Too much emphasis on set piece play ruins modern rugby. I’m not going to be the “grass was greener” guy but something is definitely lacking in today’s game after seeing this.

from a technical point of view, yes... it had everything in there from every player, Tom David's greatest match, IMHO. Despite the high tackles, the Barbs always made the ball available. The team looked as if they had been trained by Welsh coaching staff.

A few above-waist tackles there. They happened always, even in the good old days.

Maybe the 2nd greatest - only bettered by "THAT" try in the same game - which both JPR and Duckham had a hand in. Duckham must win the prize for the most wasted talent in international rugby - all from being born on the wrong side of the Severn

This was an excellent try, but Gareth Edwards try was spectacular. “Bennet, to Williams… Williams to Pullin, John Dawes… Dawes to David, Quinell…and here comes Edwards, Edwards…will he get there! What a try!!”

It was the greatest try ever, by the greatest player ever, voted the greatest player of the 20th century Sir Gareth Edwards.

These days are never coming back. Video refs, concussion claims ( unlike boxing). Studio pundits trying to destroy all referring decisions, kiddologgy of players ( Leicester blood capsules in mouth). Probably the last era of genuine team sport in recent times, in ether code. Obviously football caved in a long time ago.

I definitley agree that the amateur and pro versions of the game are almost like different sports

When the AB defender got the ball on his own try line was the time to run the ball Bob Burgess kicked the ball back to to the Baabaas instead of running it back oh how the ABs counter attack has developed since the 70s 60s and 50s

Duckham should have been Welsh. He would of fit right in with that welsh team. So similar to Gerald Davis, one of my favourites. Rip Duckham JPR Bennett. Sad to see legenda go

Play today might have been stopped when the all black number 7 was offside at the breakdown. Also a card at the end for the high shot on the try scorer.

I wonderif anyone has ever counted the number of head tackles in this game..JPR took the brunt of them but there were so many more. 🤔

It would certainly be interesting to know how many high tackles there were per game pre-professionalism compared with now.
