This bike came to us with a wobbly crankset affecting shifting, what we found was an appalling frameset requiring lots of expensive work to put right. We show you everything so you can avoid it happening to you.
This frame is a Dolan DR1. The frame was so cheap, we can't really complain. It does highlight the quality you can expect when something looks too good to be true.
Many Thanks to ‪@Hambini‬ for helping us with this project. Link to Hambini full vid: • DOLAN bike frame Reami...

Great video. I have just come over from Hambini and I am pleased to see Dolan has gone someway to ameliorating (where's that word come from) the customers issues. That said I really found your comments on the issues interesting. I feel that you gave a balanced view of the issue, and you reminded me of what I have always known, being aged 71) that you buy a bike either for the components or the frameset. Whatever option you choose you know that you will have to improve the other. I am now going to have to watch the end of this video again or scroll through your other videos to determine what frame I should replace my current Etape Dolan with as its too small for me. Yes, you now have another new Sub.

That was a very good review, thorough examination of the frame, very informative to anyone looking to score a new carbon frame, and i appreciated the end discussion so much as it shows the options you explored together with your customer and tha quality of the discussion that lead to the build. Now on top of that, this was also very well produced, lightning, filming, editing. Loved it. As many i stumbled upon your channel thanks to Hambini sharing it and you've now earned another subscriber thanks to that quality of content. Looking forward for more :)

I watched this with interest, I’ve had two Dolans, both bought in 2017. One is now sold but the other I still ride and is a lovely lightweight machine. I had a small issue with the front fork dropout which turned out to be a non issue but after returning to the store Terry Dolan offered to replace the fork for me and even gave me a factory tour while I was there and paid my fuel costs for the return journey. I’m now in the position to want another bike and again Dolan were in my shortlist but i opted for Giant, mainly for the lifetime warranty. This turned out to be a bad experience where I got a frame with poor paint finishing, scratches and a very poorly finished rear caliper mount that the dealer couldn’t then fix as they didn’t have a facing tool. I returned the Giant for a refund after they made it quite clear they weren’t interested. So it goes to show, all brands can produce junk, on balance my experience with Dolan has been good, and I would still consider them for another bike, I think in this instance they should have been a lot more helpful to the customer and maybe offered an upgrade to one of their newer disc frames, as the DR1 is an old disc design now. Great video though 👍

My issue is why is the bike industry OK with ripping us consumers off! The past few years and we have Hambini and Luescher Teknik who have been the light givers on these rubbish frames and components. It’s a joke! Thanks for the video, enjoyed and glad you’ve shed more light on this. If the frame is worth 90/100$ then what would you expect for that money. I for one have lost faith in the market!!! Will check out some of your recommendations as even my EMONDA alr BB is not right.
@Mapdec

One rule for me, avoid any brand that isn’t willing to sell you a frame on its own. Frames are being used as hangers to sell components, some of which is just landfill quality. The frame should be the part you invest in. There is no education out there about buying a bike frame, and a bike gets a good review if it has an Ultegra Groupset at in unbelievable price.

Someone somewhat local to me is selling a DR1 and i was very interest. Its brand new from 2017, never ridden. But now it looks like its a too goo to be true bike. It comes with everything you mentioned on this bike, but if the frame is crap, its definitely not worth it.

Have only just discovered your channel and really enjoyed this and the Cinelli build video watched so far. Channels like this, along with some others such as BikesSpeeds and Hambini etc are now my goto RU-vid places for a cycling fix instead of GCN and the likes. With regards to the Dolan, I am quite shocked by that, its appalling that it clearly wasn’t subject to any meaningful QC inspection by Dolan prior to dispatch. Surely that BB cant of been that loose from new? For balance, I myself own a Dolan carbon cyclocross frame that I picked up during one of the lockdowns as a build project, and while watching this I didn’t recall any similar issues myself while putting it together. Just to be sure, I have checked it over again and the BB86 is still solid, disc mounts nicely faced, and headset bearing areas not over sprayed. From what I can tell with a torch (for what thats worth) the insides of head and down tubes and bb area appear ok too. Maybe I just got lucky?
@Mapdec
@Mapdec 2 года назад
Thanks Simon. I am really hopeful that the frame in the video is the only one that slipped through the QC net. If it was I suspect Dolan would be all over getting the frame back to them and the issue sorted, I kinda got the impression from their communications that this was a common conversation.

Seems to make some Al alloy frames a better value at this price point. This is a tough call, but I can agree with using the Hambini treatment for keeping frames out of the landfill. I think I will reiterate that at some price points, an decent alloy frame will probably better a cheap carbon frame. People shouldn’t be loathe to choose metal over carbon, or go a price level down on components for a better frame.
@Mapdec
@Mapdec 2 года назад
You are right, but is is quite hard to find a brand that makes good Aluminium that they don’t bundle up with the cheaper parts. Cannondale used to really go for it with the CAAD10 and now the CAAD13 is all budget parts. Mason are doing good things. Can’t think of many brands really embracing alu.

This is disturbing - as I bought a Dolan frame last year (l'Etape SL) to build up with a Campag Chorus groupset. It was the Dolan name that attracted me in the first place given their reputation on the track. I have to say that the build was straightforward and, thus far, I have had no issues, and it rides very nicely, but this will, I am sure be at the back of my mind. Certainly disappointed in Dolan's attitude to replacement. Goodwill is worth way more than a few pounds off a profit ledger, especially nowadays with the ease of sharing bad (and good) experiences. Not sure they will be on my list should I be in the market for another frame.

@Morgan Rees......Totally agree with your comment Morgan. Firstly, although I have never owned a Dolan frameset - I am pretty familiar with them as I used to ride with a number of pros whose teams used Terry Dolan bikes. [Despite the fact they were often not 'badged up' as Dolan frames it was well-known, that they were his frames]. In addition, we are all well aware of the connection between [Terry] Dolan bikes and Chris Boardman especially, not to mention the likes of Bradley Wiggins and Alex Dowsett et al. However, I am not sure if Terry Dolan himself still owns/runs the company or whether he sold the brand to a larger bike supplier? [Wikipedia does seem to imply the company is still owned by Terry Dolan]. If that is the case - Mr Dolan is making a very serious and highly damaging mistake by underestimating the impact publicity like this will have on his business. In today's extremely competitive and highly comodotised global marketplace, consumers have all the power and their buying decisions are very much influenced by their 'experiences' with companies and their products. Indeed, 'Customer Experience' [CX] is so powerful it has actually transcended price and the product itself! [ie: we will loyally buy a particular company's products over a competitor's products even if the competitor's products are better and cheaper!] It is also why most of the world's most successful companies [and particularly retailers such as Amazon, Wallmart, Zappo, Apple etc] have embraced a 'Customer-centric' business model. As you quite rightly state Morgan, 'Goodwill' is worth a damn sight more than a few extra pounds profit - and is the reason why so many companies today [eg; Ritz-Carlton Hotel Group] set aside up to US$2000 per 'incident' to address situations like this and do their utmost to ensure an extra-ordinary 'customer experience'. This is clearly something the bike industry as a whole has not yet learned.

I do custom builds for people..given the cost of ‘mainstream’ big name bikes and frames verses the cost of building a Chinese frame ( yes,this cheap Chinese frame has Dolan stickers) then it is worth the effort. In my experience the only difference between a branded frame such as Specialized and an unbranded Chinese frame is quality control and warranty. Own brand Chinese manufacturers cost more,but offer 100% good service. Ali Express frames retailing for £450 often are perfect for most consumers,but worth having a decent mechanic check and put together. Many,many big name frames crack,break,fail and by now manufacturers should have overcome major issues. In short of course it is worth taking the time to make good. Hambini bottom bracket will last a lifetime. Hope your customer gets great pleasure from his lovely bike.

Sure. The owner was disappointed, felt that had made a poor choice and a bit confused on the best way forward. We know them well and had a great conversation along the lines in this video. He also spoke to Dolan himself and was upset about their response. He was shielding through the pandemic and the bike had very little use. The bike was a fantastic deal with all those parts, and so the work we and Hambini did kind of bought the overall price upto what to expect, rather than the too good to be true price. The world does not need more landfill and so there was a good conscience element to repair something they did enjoy riding.

I wouldn't have bothered fixing that. I would demand my money back - who knows what other corners have been cut inside. You can't put lipstick on a pig. I wouldn't have reamed the inside of the steerer, that's taking precious little strength away. Would have bonded in a plug with epoxy. Third time I've edited this comment...How can a frame that's so far out of QC be "out of warranty" ?!!!! Shame on Dolan. Avoid! Great video, well shot, by the way.
@Mapdec
@Mapdec 2 года назад
Thanks. Dolan refused refund or any help other than selling another frame. That’s a non starter. Stearer tube wasn’t reamed like you would a seat tube, just light sand to allow compression bung to hold. Nothing that wouldn’t usually be done in finishing. This is similar to what bike shops do with cervello steerer tubes. Sand down, epoxy in a shim, fit bung. There is a lot of strength in steerer tubes. Have you ever tried to break one? The kind of work we do is very common, the problem is with D2C brands is they don’t get an additional PDI check by a bike shop. Thanks for the kind words.

I have a Dolan GXA (aluminium gravel) and the design of rear drop-outs is something I try to forget when riding.. 4 M3 x 10 (a guess) screws hold the drop-out to the rear triangle - totally reliant on these to stop the whole back end from dropping out. Ribble (CGR) and a few others share the same drop-outs. The finish is fine, but the choice of design is guff…

@Mapdec 2 года назад
Yes. I probably assumed that was a given and could of made the point clearer. Essentially they are using their OEM discount from Shimano and Mavic to make money and a low cost frame is just a mechanism to sell those parts. I really think this practise has to stop and Shimano should only supply parts at OEM prices to actual manufacturers, not companies that buy open mould frames from China just to access the Shimano, Mavic etc OEM prices.
@bonzobanana1
@bonzobanana1 2 года назад
@@Mapdec From what I understand from a few years ago when I spent sometime looking around Chinese sites and manufacturers because I was interested in the cycling industry typically open mould frames are better frames with regard strength and quality. You have a stock frame design that is sold by a huge number of importers around the world all feeding back information about the issues of such frames and those type of frames evolve over time with improvements to their design which compared to new designs are often lighter weight and only really tested by the certification process not real world testing. I think it was fuji-ta that I saw that information which is the world's biggest cycle manufacturer. The issue whether an original frame design or open mould is good is surely quality of manufacturing. I've seen some very expensive frames analysed by Hambini, Luescher Technik and a few other youtubers and many have been very poor quality. Open mould frames would typically be a little heavier I think. Planet X used to sell £300 CF frames and forks just before the pandemic. I wonder what their frame and fork quality is like. One look at that steerer tube, and that is a NO for me. You are reaming the resin while those carbon fibres can be running longitudinally (up and down) to give it stiffness. If you remove resin, you can cause delamination which can lead to catastrophic failure right in the area of the spacers and bung. Moreover, if the quality is like that on the steerer then what is it going to be like at the junction of the top tube and head tube? There's a reason for that opaque grey paint-- to hide the voids and quality defects. The best carbon frames have clear coat, which makes it harder to hide problems and easier to see the compression.
@Mapdec
@Mapdec 2 года назад
How do you think they ream BB apertures to sizes and shape? All carbon construction requires a lot of shaping and finishing after the mould is removed. It’s just that some factories really skimp on this process and leave it to bike shops to do. In reality this work should have been done by Dolan prior to building on the Components. Or, they will have specified the finishing standard to the factory and used that agreement to claim compensation. Maybe they knew these were substandard and sold them anyway. There is so much carbon material in that steerer tube, massively over engineered. It has to be, because the labour time involved in making it on the limit of weight for purpose would be massive and prohibitive for a budget frame set. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

My recent experience with them was appalling, they took my money instantly, they delayed my bike a number of times during which time they continuously offered me upgrades at my expense. Eventually I had to accept the bike in a different colour than that ordered just to get it within 18 months. The bike I eventually received did not ship with the components agreed or what I was expecting. The bike also looked as if my cat had built it. The power button (ebike) rattled as the retaining bolt was too long and bottomed out preventing it from being tightened. The rack was assembled incorrectly and bolts cross threaded, the tyres were flat due to not being seated correctly to name but a few issues. The greatest concern for me was the lack of desire shown to correct these things and ensure customer satisfaction. My advice would be to find a great LBS and mechanic who values and enjoys cycling themselves. A place that values reputation above all.

hi, Paul. Interesting to heard that you think that's difficult to get £200 carbon fibre frame. I have bought a carbon fibre directly from a chinese bike OEM factor for £167 ( at today's currency rate). plus £40 shipping. according to the OEM factor, it was make by t800 carbon fibre. when it arrive in the UK. would you be interested to make a video of it ? I can send it to you. So I can have some faith building the bike after your QC check. hahaha

This is not something I want to touch really. The reason is accountability… when a recognised brand name is present they have accountability and insurance. If you have a horrific accident on that frame, who are you going to sue? These Ali express sellers know that and come and go accordingly. Good luck, stay safe.
@AntiVaganza
@AntiVaganza 2 года назад
While I agree with the findings on the quality front, I am not sure the math holds up. Dolan would never pay list price for components, would they? They would get dealer - or better - prices, so perhaps knock ~40% off those quoted wheel and group set prices? (Not sure of pricing deals in the bike world). Otherwise, with your math, as you said the frame was free, and there'd be zero profit - which surely is an ever faster way to run your company into the ground than making bad frames. If we assume Dolan does indeed get, at least, dealer prices on the components, there's enough money in there to pay labor, pay a bit more for the frame and even make a bit of profit. Which I guess, at the end of the day actually makes an even better argument for the fact that the frame should have been of better quality.
@Mapdec
@Mapdec 2 года назад
Thanks. It’s been discussed before and I could have explained my point better. It’s obvious that Dolan pays significantly less for components. The point I was trying to make is that the profit is being made by using a cheap frame to hang more valuable components from and effectively make profit from the value of the Shimano / Mavic parts. I hope that makes more sense.

@AdeboFunkyVoodoo 2 года назад
Your cost breakdown on the bike to ascertain the value/cost of the frame is ridiculous. The factory pays nothing close to retail for components. They pay trade and buying thousands of groupsets etc per month so will get significant bulk discounts. So no, the frameset isn't essentially free. It's definately garbage and worthless so there really isn't any need to misrepresent the facts in order to make a mute point.
@Mapdec
@Mapdec 2 года назад
I think you need to rewatch the video. The cost breakdown is as if the customer wanted to build a bike themselves and collect the parts together. Obviously Dolan pay OEM price. That’s a given. The point, is the profit margin they make is made from essentially retailing the Components by attaching them to a worthless frame.
@AdeboFunkyVoodoo
@AdeboFunkyVoodoo 2 года назад
@@Mapdec You literally pose the question, the economics don't add app how do Dolan do it. You already know, we already know so it's an entirely mute point. As for, I.meant if you built it yourself, that isn't merely mute it's irrelevant and vapid. If you add up the cost to build your own Tedla Model S... the motor(s) is free. Ergo Their motors must be valueless. See how vapid it is? The appalling QC and build quality on tbe frameset speaks for itself, there is absolutely no need to attempt to imply that the frameset must cost Dolan almost nothing. Which is exactly what you do when you posit that the economics for Dolan (they have to pay vat etc) dosn't add up. They do, it's just a rubbish example of a frameset with ridiculous QC from Dolan.
@KimHDRoberts
@KimHDRoberts 2 года назад
A bit disingenuous to calculate manufacturer cost using retail pricing for the components… we all know that OE’s don’t pay retail. Having said that, there’s zero excuse for Dolan not to have immediately warrantied this frame - and to pay for the your time to strip and rebuild (and not the usual 100 quid nonsense that most OE’s try on).

The crank just had some light running from the riders heel. The BB that came out was spotless. The chainrings hardly used. Also, if crank was worn, it would affect bearings, but the bearing shell would protect against damage to frame. I see what your thinking though.

@Mapdec
@Mapdec 2 года назад
Why? No difference to corrective actions taken at factory, build warehouse or bike shop. This one just slipped through and ended up with the end consumer before it was corrected. Every bike has an element of finishing applied. Mostly by the factory before it heads to paint. Sometimes by the brand in corrective action for identified QC, but too often by the bike shops. That’s why we have facing and reaming tools on site. Forks often come in slight out of round, or with ridges that need filing down. The big deal is that it went through the Dolan QC and build and directly to the rider. The only visible safety implication is that the compression bung doesn’t hold tight. I can almost guarantee your fork will have had a similar treatment, but you would hopefully never know about it.

What is staggering is this stuff goes out of the door QC approved; that is unforgivable. I don't know how inclined your customer is but I would be getting a full written report from Hambini and Mapdec and sending them to Dolan for full reimbursement (components, labour, reports, punitive). And if you don't get any joy from that issue a County Court claim. Oh, and NEVER sign an NDA. An NDA just allows them to sell the same crap to other unsuspecting buyers. Bike companies need to be brought to task and actually produce a product that is fit for purpose (and that matches the marketing BS) without end-user fettling.
