So I replaced my suspension rods and after a few months the banging came back. I tried different methods to secure the tub, but the banging kept happening. After watching this video I see there are springs that can be put on the rods. I never had those on my kenmore machine I've looked to see if they broke off and nothing was there. I made my own suspension rod supports. I used some black tie down straps with the silver hooks that flatbed truckers use. What I did was put one on the back right side, I hooked it to the tub post then looped it twice around the rod ran it along side of the tub, and hooked to a opening on the machine in the front. On the left front side I did the same thing, but hooked it to a rear opening. The machine doesn't bang violently anymore, and it is more secure than it was before. I breathed new life in this 8 years old machine.
My Amana washer looks JUST like your washer. Several makes just have different brand name on it. I replaced those shock absorber rods, and it kinda worked for a day or 2. But another procedure must be followed to RECALIBRATE the balance. This is done by FIRST setting the washer to DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE. Set the dial to the 12 oclock position. Wait a few seconds.. Then do the following within 6 seconds: ROTATE CYCLE SELECTOR KNOB COUNTERCLOCKWISE ONE OR MORE CLICKS....ROTATE RIGHT ONE CLICK & BACK.... AGAIN ROTATE RIGHT ONE CLICK & BACK.... AGAIN ROTATE RIGHT ONE CLICK & BACK.... then rotate LEFT one click & back... then rotate RIGHT one click & back. If you did it correct, then all the green status indicators will blink on & off every half second. NOW you are in diagnostic mode. To enter the CALIBRATE mode... simply click the selector knob one click at a time until you have ONE GREEN LED lit up in the middle. (Ignore the RED LED). When the middle LED (rinse) is lit up, and the 2 to each side are NOT lit.... THAT is calibration mode. Tub must be empty of water and clothes so it calibrates correctly. Simply press the START button and it will take a couple minutes to calibrate the spinning of the tub... You will hear the motor start and stop... and other clicks and noises. Wait patiently until it finishes and wait after 5 minutes the machine will return to NORMAL mode with all LED's not lit. Now wash a load and it will not bang and shake any more. This information is printed on the SERVICE MANUAL located INSIDE THE WASHER on the front panel. see page 3 and 4.
Don't make the same mistake I did and get the cheap off brand of suspension rods they don't work. The problem wasn't fixed until I bought the more expensive rods.
Hey Dan , i had a question if i may,i have a old Kenmore and the difference between most peoples washers and mine is that they have banging continuosly, mine only does it once on the spin cycle but buddy, it bangs hard enough to turn it sideways, not completely but a good way,i rebuilt this washer completely about 4 years ago, i even replaced that triangular piece with the bearings (it wasn't cheap) HOWEVER for some dumb reason i never replaced the tub springs, they are like 40 years old, could that be it? thank you so much for your time.
Yes, the springs on the rods got stretched. Not sure about any other methods but a repairman would have charged 2 x for the parts and a hefty service and per hour charge. We actually had a home warranty and the people they sent out were lousy and didn’t know what they were doing. They replaced a number of other parts with no success so my wife told them to leave.
This may seem like a stupid question, but I gotta take a crack at fixing my Kenmore washer.. it started by just being off balanced every so often, to every load.. until one of the suspension rods finally snapped. My Question : Are there certain models of suspension rods I should get? When I look on Amazon there are multiple kinds that pop up under Kenmore. My washer is EXACTLY like this one. I'm going to use your video as a guide.. but trying to purchase the rods without knowing the difference (or if there is a difference) complicates things for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Is there a specific make or model for the rods to this or any washers? Thank you so very much!
I believe I searched Kenmore washer parts and the correct site popped up. I then inputted the model number and it gave me the correct parts to order. On another note, the parts arrived and somehow got damaged and bent in the mail. I sent a pic to them and they were very nice and immediately sent me another set.
