Washing your vitreous enamels before using them is an important step in getting beautiful, clear transparent enamels. If your transparent enamels are cloudy, the most likely culprit is improperly washed enamels.
Do you sift enamels of all different opacities to 200 prior to washing (opaque/transparent/opalescent/ etc.), or should some be sifted to a different grain size? The sifter pack I have contains 6 sizes and I’m curious if some are better suited for certain things. Should specialty enamels (crackle, for instance) also be sifted?
Hi, Sandra :) Do I have to wash the flux and can I use the fines for counter ? And one more question related to the kiln firing - as I saw there are a lot of firings 6-7 at least , maybe sometimes more... do I have to get glassy texture from first to last firing or only the last firing ? Thank you
I usually sift my flux using a 200 sifter instead of washing it. I would at least go for an "orange peel" texture for each firing, but you don't have to do the full glossy melt until the last if that works for you. It would prevent over-firing, I'm sure... ;)
