@CMLovejoy its only worn out whitegoods no need to feel bad :D it was great fun :D, pick up washer from junk yard, reduce it to smaller pieces using its own power, return it to junk yard to get reduced to much smaller pieces again :D

It's the large pulley on the drum that's gives a lot of torques , the universal motor has only hight rpms

@uxwbill yeh a lot of yards are protective here too, usually scared of liability if you hurt yourself with whatever it is you got off them. I should try the battery this weekend, no leaks in the case or anything as far as I can tell :D

variac is an autotransformer so it doesn't isolate the supply.

YAY! Next, how about a tumble drier, powered by a washer motor?! :-D .......But aren't you worried about the battery being broken up & dangerous acid leaking out into the ground? :-(

ouch, I'd use the variac, even if its just an isolation transformer, saves the ground shorts on the line if the acid gets poured all over the place ;)
