#4 Huskies roll into Lincoln and start slow but finish strong and beat the #9 Cornhuskers in a huge 36-21 win. Jay Barry's 4th quarter 81-yard TD run is the play that will be forever remembered in Husky lore, but Hobert to McKay's 4th down conversion (at the 7:15 mark) was the single-most important play of the season IMO. September 21, 1991.

I've never seen a team so dominate on any level as this Husky team was. They mashed offensive lines at will and basically had their way with everybody. The NCAA blew up the program strictly out of spite just like they did to USC several years later. Don James walked away in protest costing the game one of the greatest leaders of young men they had at the time. Huge , Huge loss. But I can't blame him.

Plain shame when the Dawgfather left after Hobert had a case of the guilt's. Would have liked to have seen Dawgs play Miami on I-5 for the National Championship, after Miami player said Dawgs could only win at home. Believe it was Chico Fraley that said we'll play them in the Orange Bowl, we'll play them on Mars, we'll even play them on I-5. There is no doubt they would have torn Miami a new one.
@babykevinxoxo

I know that's why Miami dominated them in the Orange Bowl. If Miami would have played Wa or Nebraska they would not have dominated. They would have lost to Washington.

As someone who really tries to be an objective sports fan, I'm absolutely convinced that Washington would have beat Miami in every facet of the game. On top of that, I believe that Washington's defense was as good as any that came either before and after it. In fact, I think you could make a case that they were in the top 5 defenses in history--and I don't say that lightly. They really were that good.

The 91' Huskies were complete on every aspect. They had a good passing & running game. As you said they had a great defense you couldn't pass and run on. Also had pretty good special teams as well. They would have kicked Miami's ass in 1991, the fact that they beat Miami in 1994 with a depleted probation team tells me everything. If they had a playoff in 1991 it would have been Washington, Miami, Florida and most likely Michigan.

this was a real game....Washington 91 was one of the best teams that Nebraska has ever played, I actually don't think NU 91 was an average team. They were good - they won the Big 8, and hung with Miami in Miami for 2-3 quarters. Washington was the best team that year, and one of the best ever

Shutouts are always nice but Miami only scored 3 tds at home. You also have to admit Michigan was a much much tougher opponent than Nebraska and UW led them 34-7 before Mich scored a late td in the rose bowl, in a neutral site. UW was better than Miami that year. Remember Miami only won at FSU because the FSU FG kicker choked.

A true national championship in 1991 would have been Washington and Miami because it's still questioned to this day who would be the winner, Miami had a quick strike offense and a great defense, while Washington was the most physical team on offense and defense that year

+GENERALSPARTAN27 There was a lot more NFL talent on the Washington team on both sides of the ball (including the #1 draft pick). Torretta wasn't a mobile QB either and didn't do well against high pressure defenses (judging by his performance in the 92 Sugar Bowl). I think Washington would have beaten Miami soundly.

Much is always made about how Nebraska's losses to Florida St. and Miami in bowl games in the late '80s and early '90s emphasized the Cornhuskers' need to improve their overall team speed and change its defensive scheme. But I think these losses to Washington in '91 and '92 were just as important in shaping the Big Red dynasty that was to come.
@jrino1979
@jrino1979 2 года назад
For sure. Compare the Blackshirts in this game vs the next year in Seattle. Washington probably should've scored more than 36 in this game. Probably should've scored about 21 in the 92 game. What was interesting was that Nebraska actually was pretty good on defense against OU (For the most part) and CU in the 80s, even if they lost those games. Nebraska actually had to get better skill at rush end and OLB in order to both take care of the run and cover spread - or at least pro style - passing teams. Nebraska's offense actually struggled at least as much in their biggest games, but a lot of that was the defenses of Miami, FSU, and OU, which were elite

Fair point - forgot about the shutout. Miami's defense is the best NU ever faced. However, NU's defense hung with Miami virtually the whole game - I think Miami only had 13 pts at halftime. Washington hung 618 yards on NU - in Lincoln (this used to be a big deal till the last 6-7 yrs or so :P). Playing Nebraska in Lincoln vs home was about a 10-14 point swing, according to Vegas (and opposing Big 8 coaches). Miami would have had a quite a low-scoring tussle had they played in Nebraska.

@SunnyIlha 3 года назад
Huskies defense started dominating them in the 3rd quarter crushed them in the 4th quarter. Huskies offense steamrolled them in the 4th. 81-yard TD run. Huskies running backs were cooking. Offensive line dominates. Hobert was a QB who could run with the ball (Hallmark of great Husky team years; a "running back-quarterback"). Mario Bailey receiver = great. 1st half a close game. 2nd half a Huskies rout.

You have to realize that a shutout in a New Years Day Bowl games is impressive as hell. How many times have you seen that? Nebraska didn't cross the 50 yard line until the mid 3rd quarter. Miami dominiated Nebraska in all phases of the game. Washington pulled away from Nebraska at the end of the game. This Washington team was good but I think Miami would have beaten them.
