I’ve never liked how the committee treats Group of Five teams. They usually only have one, maybe two of them ranked this close to the end of the season, and never above 23rd. The AP and Coaches Polls almost always have at least two of these teams ranked and sometimes more, with the highest being in the top 20; pretty much exactly what we have this year again. The only reason for this discrepancy has to be the money that these bigger conferences and their schools have that the committee is fond of. It’s a significant bias that has little to do with on-field play. New Mexico State just smoked Auburn; unfortunately, most power programs who schedule out of conference games in November choose to pound FCS schools, so it’s a shame we don’t get to see more matchups like that (and it’s pretty obvious why that this is the case). There’s no way to truly know if the fourth-place ACC or sixth-place SEC team is that much better than a Group of Five conference leader with only one loss or who is undefeated, but winning games should always mean more than who someone lost to. There’s a reason Tennessee and Clemson, for example, are where they are. They had their shots against superior teams and lost. I kinda miss when the computers ranked teams in the BCS days; at least it wasn’t a bunch of suits in a room that could be bought.
